After securing the keys, June opted for subtlety and drove the most understated Mercedes she could find in the garage.
When she arrived at the gate, a security guard approached and said, “Miss, I haven’t seen you around here before. Please step out and let me verify your identity before you can enter.”
“Sure,” June replied as she opened the car door. Just as she was about to scan her access card, a familiar mocking tone sounded in her ears.
“Well, if it isn’t June Keller. Bit out of your league, aren’t you? This is Lakeside Villa, Asterwich’s wealthy community. Think a broke-a** like you has any business here?” Turning, June was greeted by the sneering face of her former mother-in-law, Dawn Flores.
During her marriage to Kane, Dawn had never been kind to June. Back then, June would swallow her pride to keep the peace for Kane’s sake. But those days were long gone.
“If I’m here, I obviously belong. But really, what’s it to you? Got too much time on your hands or just can’t help sticking your nose where it doesn’t belong?” June shot back.
“You…” Dawn sputtered, infuriated by June’s comeback. “I always knew that sweet and obedient act was b**it. Thank God my son dumped you when he did. Who knows how long you could’ve kept up that charade?”
“Oh, you’re aware we’re divorced? Then why the hell are you meddling in my life? Looking for **t to stir because you’re bored?” June retorted, arms crossed, facing down Dawn’s aggression.
“I underestimated you before; didn’t peg you for someone with such a sharp tongue!” Unable to outwit June, Dawn turned to the security guard. “Listen, I know her. She’s nothing but a thief trying to sneak into this affluent area. When she was with us, stuff would always go missing. Be careful-if anything gets stolen, can you afford to cover the loss?”
The residents of Lakeside Villa were among the elite; their possessions were extraordinarily valuable. The security guard, now wary, eyed June with suspicion and caution.
“Miss, only residents are allowed inside. Please leave immediately, or I must take action,” the security guard said.
“Did anyone say I am not a resident here? Am I really an outsider?” June ignored the guard and scanned her access card on the reader at the
gate.
Dawn looked at her disdainfully, ready to see June humiliated. However, to her shock, the

gate unlocked with a beep.
Dawn’s eyes widened in disbelief. “How… how do you have an access card for this place?”
Ignoring her, June turned to the guard. “Can I go in now?”

The guard was shocked and responded nervously, “Of course, miss. Please, go right ahead. I’l let you through immediately.”
The security guard couldn’t believe that June was actually a resident. ‘Had I just offended a legitimate resident? Am I gonna lose my job over this?’ he thought, worried.
