Kane sifted through the documents in his hand, his tone casual. “Who?”
“It’s Ms. Keller,” Jocelyn said over the phone, her tone mixed with surprise. “I never thought she’d be thriving so d**n well after ditching you. Just dropped a cool twenty grand on a tie like it’s nothing. I used to worry she’d be screwed without you, but guess I worried for nothing.”
tie? What the hell does June néed a tie for? Is there another guy?’ Kane’s mind raced, and he stopped rifling through the papers. “And then?” he pressed, a hint of edge in his voice.
Jocelyn sighed dramatically. “I was actually eyeing that tie myself, thought I’d snag it for you. But Me
High-and-Mighty Keller wouldn’t budge. We’re both VIPS, so I whipped out my VIP card, trying to get it first. But then, Keller pulls the store owner into it, and bam, she walks away with the tie.”
She paused, then added with a hint of gossip, “Heard from Angie the owner is some old dude. You think June has lost it post-divorce, h**ng up with geezers? She’s still so young. If she keeps this up, she’s gonna trash her life…”
Hearing this, an image of June, clinging to some guy in a bar, flashed through Kane’s mind. His face hardened, his grip on the phone tightening. This weird pang of irritation-why do I even care? June is history,’ he said to himself.
Relaxing his grip, Kane spoke calmly, devoid of emotion. “June and I are done. What she does is none of my d** business. Don’t bring her up again, okay?”
Jocelyn grinned inwardly, satisfied with Kane’s reaction. Sensing it was time to back off, she changed the subject. “You focus on your work. I’m heading home. Don’t worry about me.”
“Sure,” Kane responded tersely, then ended the call.
Despite his calm demeanor, the image of June with another man gnawed at him, stirring a blend of annoyance and unrest. He couldn’t shake it off, and finally, frustration boiling over, he stormed out of his office.
Meanwhile, June returned home and presented the tie to her older brother. Dwayne, I chose this tie especially for you to celebrate your project’s success.”
Dwayne accepted the tie, feeling its fabric. “My little sister has grown up and knows how to spoil her big brother. I’m delighted.”
“Of course, Dwayne. You’ve always been so good to me, and I wanted to show my gratitude,”

June said. Seeing Dwayne’s reluctance to try on the tie, she asked. “Aren’t you going to try it on? What if it doesn’t fit?”
“No need for that. I trust your taste,” Dwayne replied, stroking the box with a warm smile-on his face. “I’ll wear it at our company’s celebration banquet.”
“Oh, I see your plan,” June remarked, patting her chest. “No problem. I’ll tie a perfect knot for you that day.”
Dwayne set the tie aside and handed June a key from the table. “Your office is far from home, and commuting must be a ha**sle. I’m giving you Villa No. 8 by the lake at Lakeside Villa. You can relax there after work and come home on weekends to dine with Mom and Dad.”
June knew Villa No. 8 had the best location and view in the estate. Her brother’s gesture reaffirmed that family always came first. “Then I won’t hesitate, Dwayne. Thank you!” June exclaimed.
Dwayne smiled warmly. “We’re a family. It was nothing.”
