Chapter 13
As June turned away to make a phone call, Angelica furrowed her brow in confusion. “What the hell is she up to now?” she muttered to Jocelyn.
“She’s probably feeling embarrassed and using the phone call as an excuse to slip away quietly,” Jocelyn replied, a hint of amusement in her voice.
Angelica nodded knowingly. “Makes sense. But no matter what she’s scheming, we have the VIP card. What can she really do?”
Their conversation was interrupted as June returned from her call, accompanied closely by the store manager, who took the tie from the sales associate.
Jocelyn lifted her chin, expecting the manager to address her respectfully. To her surprise, the manager turned and smiled politely to June.
“Ms. Keller, our boss, had informed me of the situation. I’ll have the tie wrapped up for you immediately,” the manager said respectfully, referring to Dwayne, who owned the store.
This establishment belonged to the Keller family. June had only wanted to purchase a tie as a surprise gift for her brother. She hadn’t anticipated encountering Jocelyn and Angelica. Previously, she had endured Jocelyn’s behavior to avoid complicating things with Kane, but now she wouldn’t want anyone to take advantage of her.
As she heard the manager’s words, Jocelyn’s expression stiffened, her smile fading.
“Excuse me, but don’t VIP customers here get first dibs on stuff? I’m the one with the VIP card, so why the hell is Ms. Keller getting the tie?” Jocelyn demanded, frustration evident in
her tone.
Angelica chimed in, her irritation clear. “Exactly! I mean, I get it if the sales guy is a numbskull, but how can you, the manager, not spot who’s actually splurging in this store?”
The manager offered a contrite smile. “I’m really sorry, ladies. I’m just following the boss’s orders here, and that’s all we know. If you fancy anything else in our store, please feel free to choose. This tie, however, is exclusively reserved for Ms. Keller, and my hands are tied.”
“Ms. Keller, this way please.” The manager gestured politely toward the lounge area. “Why don’t you relax while I get your purchase ready?”
“Sure, June responded nonchalantly, throwing a sidelong glance at Angelica and Jocelyn before sauntering off with the manager to the checkout counter.

A few minutes later, she returned with a shopping bag, swinging it casually in front of Jocelyn and Angelica. “Ms. Gregory, you really need to kick this nasty habit of grabbing what’s not yours. It’s not always going to pan out for you,” she said with a taunting smirk.
Her gaze then fell on Jocelyn’s belly. “Plus, you’re pregnant. Better start teaching good values. now, right? We don’t need your kid growing up to snatch stuff like you. That’d just be another toxic pill for society,” she quipped, humming casually as she left the store with her purchase.
“Can you believe what she just said? Makes me wanna smack that smirk right off her face.” Angelica’s face flushed with anger, ready to charge after June.
Equally furious, Jocelyn held her friend back. “Chill, Angie, it’s just a tie. If Ms. Keller wants it that bad, she can have it. But seriously, what’s her deal with the store owner?”
“Are they screwing? What else could it be?” Angelica scoffed, disgust lacing her voice. “June’s got the looks, I’ll give her that. But sleeping with some old geezer just for cash? That’s low.”
“I don’t think so. June Keller doesn’t strike me as that type of woman,” Jocelyn said, her gaze thoughtful despite her disagreement with Angelica.
“How could you be so naive? I’ve seen tons like her. They’d sell their souls for a few bucks,” Angelica insisted, pulling Jocelyn toward the exit. “We’re never coming back to this cursed place.”
Once in the car, Jocelyn grabbed her phone and dialed Kane.
“Kane, you won’t believe who I ran into at the mall today,” she started, her voice dripping with intrigue.
