Konan and I stood watching each other. His lips were set in a sneer and from the way his hands curled into fists, I could tell his father said something to him.
That’s none of my business.
If anything, I want him to provoke me. I want him to show how much of an asshole he is so I can have an outlet for this anger raging within..
Sadie eventually realized something was up and looked between us. “Do you guys know each other or something?”
I smiled, feeling a quake happen in my bones.
Come on. Come on. Come on. Come on. My wolf paced restlessly. ‘Come on, you hot pile of dogshit! Do something. Say something
“Of course.” Sadie facepalmed herself. “He’s a graduate of the Academy. You guys must have known each other, right?”
Konan slowly smiled too. “Yes, Sadie.” He replied, putting an arm around her shoulder, making her blush. “We’ve met.”
Sadie watched me. “Are you okay?”
་
I slowly turned to her, barely feeling anything else than anger. “Yes!” I replied. “Just waiting for Konan to tell you how he was my bully at the Academy.”
Sadie frowned, slowly shrugging off Konan’s arm as she took a step away. “What?”
“Babygirl, what’s wrong?” Miro mindlinked. “I can feel something is off.”
“It’s under control, baby.” I replied, focusing on the situation at hand. Now excitement coursed through me with a tingling
sensation.
“Sadie, look I can expl-”
“He also thinks women have no place in the Academy.” I stated. Sooo, I don’t know what he would think about your dream of being an Elite soldier.”
“Wow.” Sadie folded her arms. “Is that true?”
“Sadie, don’t believe her. She’s jealous.”
A bitter laugh came out of me as I looked around. “Of? What? You? Remember everything that you are came from what your parents stole from me!”
The people around collectively gasped.
“What?” Sadie turned to him. “Is that true?!
That’s a lie.” Konan stepped forward, and I tensed, ready for shit to go down.

Chapter 209
Sadie took a step away from him, shaking her head. “I am so disappointed.”
Konan looked at us both and scoffed. “So you’re going to choose her side over me, your mate?”
A tinge of sadness appeared in Sadie’s green eyes, and it dawned on me that I had been selfish, stroking my own ego, not even considering her own happiness on her birthday.
Sadie’s hand slid into mine as she slowly moved closer. “Yes.”
Her voice was quiet and timid and I held on to her, feeling guilt suppressing the anger in me. “Sadie, I think I should go.”
She held on tighter. “I’ll see you outside.”

Nodding in reply, we proceeded to leave but I felt Sadie jerk. Turning around, I found Konan gripping her arm. “How dare you walk away from me?!”
Anger surged again but before I could react, Sadie ran her knee up his nuts, eliciting a collective ‘oooh‘ from the crowd. Konan bent over, releasing her, as his face twisted in pain.
“Don’t ever touch me like that again!” Sadie muttered, kicking him in the leg before walking away.
I lingered, a smile on my lips as I watched Konan struggle with his pain. He raised his eyes to me, a smile curling his lips. “You think you’re so tough now, huh?”
My smile faded. “The only reason you’re not in the same coma I put your brother, is because of her. But keep testing me, I am itching to make my dreams come true.”
Konan’s strained expression morphed into a grimace smile but to my disappointment, he didn’t say anymore.
Walking out of the building, I found Miro speaking to Sadie, before coming my way with a sense of urgency.
“Siryn,” He mindlinked me, holding my face in both his hands.
“I’m fine.”
“I know my love, but something came up.‘ He continued, using the same form of communication.
“What happened?”
“The men I sent to the east, they are facing oppression. My father plus the families have put together an army to prevent my men from coming in. I need to go help them.”
“I’m coming too.”
“No. I need you to be safe.”
I sighted about two security men coming my way.
“These are Alan and Cal.” Miro stated, introducing them. “They will keep you safe and take you home.“.
I opened my mouth to argue but Miro cut me off, taking both my hands in his.
“Darling, I know you are more than capable of taking care of yourself. know, but this could be a trap. I know how my father thinks. He’d be expecting you there and he might have something in plan for you. Please, listen to me. I am not doing this because I think you’re weak. No. I am doing this because I am trying to protect you, okay?”

“Can I come?” Sadie interrupted. “I can keep her company.”
“Your birthday-”
“I don’t care.‘ Sadie said. “I’ll have security disperse them.”
Silence settled as I looked to Miro.
“Is this what you want?” He mindlinked and I nodded. “Fine. Go with her.”

Then he kissed my lips, lingering for some seconds before marching away. I watched him go, my wolf pining to be by his side then Sadie clung to me as Alan and Carl ushered us into an suv. As soon as we went in, I realized Miro had left behind four more SUVs filled with security to take us home.
As they pulled out of the driveway I saw Konan standing at the entrance watching us. Sadie saw him too, and the sadness on her face sent an arrow of guilt through me.
I wish her mateawasn’t my arch–enemy.
About thirty minutes into the road, we met a stop sign so while we waited, an idea came to mind.
“Give me your phone.” I said to Sadie and she immediately fished it out of her purse and handed it to me.
As soon as I collected it, I dialed El’s number and she picked on the fourth ring. Again, she was silent.
“El, it’s me. Ryn. Did you hear anything about the East waging war against men from the West?”
“Yes. We are on our way there. The Watcher had ordered all men to converge and fight alongside Miro.”
I frowned. “Does Miro know you guys are coming?”
“No, but Theon will be there. He’s the one leading the army.”
My heart soared and for the first time, I felt a glimmer of joy and relief. The idea of Theon and Miro working together sent a pleasant thrill through me. “Alright. That’s fantastic news.”
“Will you be there?”
I hesitated. “No but-”
Everything happened within seconds.
The first thing I saw was the flash of a bright white light before I saw the armored vehicle coming for us.
My entire body jerked out of my seat on impact, slamming my head against the seat in front. Sadie’s bloody scream filled the air as the vehicle rammed into her side of the door, pushing us some metres away.
Chaos filled the air as gunshots were exchanged but my head was ringing and vision blurry.
A sharp pain had me touching my forehead and when I saw blood, panic filled me.
“Miro, can you healing me.
hear me?” I tried to mindlink but I couldn’t feel my wolf. She was there but I could tell she was focused on

I strained to the side, my heart rending when I saw Sadie with blood covering half her face, as she slumped in her seat in an awkward way. My gaze strolled to her knee which had split open and had a bone jutting out.
Bloody stars!
“Sadie.” I tried to speak but my voice was raw.
Suddenly, a wheezing sound filled the air before a cough and I turned to Alan who had been driving.
“Alan! Are you okay?”
Of course that’s a stupid question.
I strained forward, realizing my ankle had been twisted. Cal was still unconscious and Alan had blood coming out of his mouth. He was a young man probably in his late twenties.
“Alan, hang in there. You hear me? You’re going to be okay. Help is coming.”
Alan took in shallow breaths and I cringed hearing the blood clogging his lungs.
Alan needs help as soon as possible, so I took his hand to keep him grounded. Twisting around, my heart pounded as a swarm of men attacked Miro’s security, some using guns, while others transformed into their wolves to fight
Fuck. I have to protect myself. Reaching for Cal’s back, I pulled out his gun just as the sound of heels clacking against the asphalt reached my ears.
That’s when I turned around and when I saw the group of armed men coming our way, my heart broke knowing Alan and Cal might not make it. Still, I pulled out Alan’s gun and placed it in his hand, then I whispered the situation in his ears and he nodded, indicating he understood.
“Good luck.” I whispered in his ear and when the first attacker showed his face near my window, I aimed and pulled the trigger.
