Chapter 171

Adam suddenly marched the brake, sending us lurching forward

He inhaled and exhaled deeply as he stared at the long line of cars in the distance. “Get in the boot, now!”

Immediately, I was removing the seat belt and rushing out of the passenger seat. El was also out too, and just as I was ready to get in, El turned to Adam and looked him right in the eye.

“Betray us and I will fuck you up.”

The both of them stared at each other for what seemed like an awkward moment for me. Adam had a rare smug smirk on his face as he looked down at El’s defiant eyes:

“I have no intention of betraying Ryn.” He said, opening the boot wider.

Eventually we got in and laid down facing each other before Adam closed the boot on us.

Despite being thrown into darkness, I could still see El’s half–hidden face and the time on my wrist watch which read ‘4:37 a.m. And when the car moved again, I saw the way El’s eyes sharpened in alarm.

I suddenly wondered about her life and how she came to be an assassin. Does she have a family? Is she an orphan like me too? What made her become a cold blooded killer?

The car suddenly slowed to a stop and then I heard voices.

“My name is Adam Blackwell. I need to get through.”

There was silence for a moment, and I watched El pull out her gun.

“Is there anything in your boot?” A man asked.

“No.”

“Can we check to confirm?”

I pulled out my own gun as well.

“Check to confirm what? I am a Blackwell.” Adam retorted, his voice carrying every bit of the power and authority of a wealthy heir.

“My apologies sir. We were informed that you were friends with one of the criminals.”

El and I exchanged a glance.

“That’s right and that’s how I know she already crossed the border heading west while you dimwits stand here and waste my time!”

Silence.

“We are very sorry sir.” The man replied.

“I’m going to get your names and I am going to get you all fired!” Adam snapped and then we heard the slam of a car door. Once the car began to move, I breathed a sigh of relief and El’s body somewhat relaxed.

Chapter 171

After a while of driving. Adam stopped the car and opened the pot, letting in the dim light of the new morning.

“You can come out now.” Adam said, extending his hand to help me out but when he extended to El, she stared at his hand and ignored him before stepping out herself.

Once again, that weird lingering stare occurred between the two of them where they seemed to be staring daggers at each other but instead, I am getting a weirder vibe. Clearing my throat, they turned to me. Then El turned away from him and grabbed her bag from the boot, while mumbling something about finding her way from here.

Then I looked around and discovered we were at a crossroads with three split roads ahead of us.

“I have to go back.” I said to her, “I need to make sure they’re okay.”

“Yeah sure. Do what you have to do.” She muttered, wearing her backpack. “I’ll keep in touch.” She nodded and with that said, she walked away, going furthest left of the road.

Adam watched her go, his brows pulled together in what I would call annoyance and curiosity.

“We should go.” I stated, drawing his attention and then he blinked at me before nodding in answer.

The moment we settled in his car, he turned the ignition and turned to me. “What’s her problem?”

I sighed, not knowing where to start or what to say. “El is…strange, difficult, but once you get to know her you’ll find out she’s not all that bad.”

Adam seemed to ponder on my words before putting the gear in motion and driving straight ahead.

Hours later, the sun was already high in the sky when we arrived at the Windermere mansion.

I was still unsure of the whole situation with Chelsea but the way the house was heavily guarded, I relaxed a bit. Entering the living room, I found Sadie clearing a plate with a cup from the center table but the moment she saw me, she placed it back down and ran to me with arms wide open.

“I’ve missed you!” She said, knocking the wind out of me.

“I missed you too.” I smiled, hugging her back. Then something made me look up and when my eyes clashed with Miro’s standing at the top of the stairs, my wolf turned feral and a burning desire for him ignited.

Sadie pulled back, drawing my attention again and when I looked up, Miro was gone.

“Hi Adam.” Sadie smiled, and the young man nodded politely before deciding to say his goodbyes.

“I heard about the whole thing with Uncle Finneagan and your inheritance! Oh my gods!” Sadie exclaimed, drawing me to a nearby chair, “we need to talk about that.”

But I felt the need to thank Adam for all his help so I excused myself and ran out the door.

“Adam!” I called, and the tall blonde turned around with sharp, alert eyes.

I stood for a moment, staring at him and wondering what consequences he might face with his family because of his help. I had no words to say so I closed the distance between us and pulled him into a hug.

Adam stiffened for a moment before relaxing and putting a hand around my back.

“Thank you.” I whispered, and when I pulled back, Adam had a sorrow in his eyes and a sad smile on his face.

“Anything for you, Kathryn.”

For once, I was not disturbed by that name so I genuinely smiled and waved to him when he eventually entered the elevator.

“He’s upstairs, being treated by Healer Kwan.” She replied, and as headed for the stairs, she fell into step with me.

Sadie shrugged. “Who cares? Haven’t heard of her in a while. I am sure my cousins got rid of her.”

I wondered if they were capable of doing that.. literally.

Getting to Theon’s room, I found Kwan checking Theon’s pulse by the wrist before nodding his head and giving reports to the three nurses standing at the foot of the bed. Then he raised his head and immediately his eyes widened in shock.
