Chapter 170
RYN
I sniffled, waiting for the door to open and when it eventually did, Miro fell into my hands.

Holding my breath, I hooked my arms under his armpits and dragged him out of the box to a few feet away. For a man, Miro was mad heavy but I was glad that I was able to carry him out. Once we were far away from the box, I sat on the floor and laid his head on my lap.
Some of the substance of the green gas had’stained his face, so I wiped them and listened for his heartbeat. When I discovered his heart was beating fine, I sighed in relief and became less worried.
Touching his face, I decided to wait for him to wake up. Then, I quickly realized how ridiculous I was being.
What if Miro went into a coma? What if it’d take days or weeks for him to wake up?
Wait, what if he woke up violent and clawed my throat?
Just as I began to rethink my close proximity to Miro, he suddenly coughed and then he rolled onto his side off of me.
“Miro?” I called softly as I knelt close to him and tentatively touched his back soothingly.
His fit of coughs died down and then he turned towards me with eyes glowing bright green. With a blink, his eyes came back to normal and I watched him warily.
“Hi.” I waved. “It’s me-”
“Ryn.” He answered and I blinked in surprise.
“You remember me?”
“Yes.” He coughed again, before sitting up on the floor. He looked at the pod where he had previously been and then at me before looking around. “What happened?”
“You were in the pod, you inhaled the gas, and when the door opened, I brought you out.”
His brows pulled together as he assessed me. “By yourself?”
“Yeah.” I said, while sliding a strand of hair behind my left ear.
“Wow. You must be pretty strong to do that.”
My face burned with sheer pride and I tried to hide behind a curtain of hair on the right side of my face but Miro reached out and slid that behind my right ear. Sweet shocks tingled my ear lobes, sending a spasm of excitement throughout my body.
I raised my eyes and looked into his curious ones and for a moment, it was just us, alone in the outer space of our own making where nothing else mattered.
“Ryn!”
I jerked as I heard El’s voice and turned to her. Her blue eyes were angry as she watched us.
“I found something in the archive room. You’re going to want to see this.” And then she was off and as I scrambled to to follow her, Miro held my elbow, sending another thrill of excitement coursing through my skin.

Chapter 170
“You’re not surprised.” He asked in what I could call wonder.
I knew what he was talking about. “I already know we’re mates”
His brows pulled together. “But how? You’re Theon’s mate.”
I swallowed, watching him warily. “Uhm, it has to do with the fact that I am different and not like you?”
“Different like a blood wolf?”
I raised my brows, realization setting in. “Is that what I am?”
“As long as your wolf is red in color. Yes….I guess.” He answered, watching me warily too.
I pondered on his words, feeling a whole new sense of excitement. I am a blood wolf. What does that even mean? “I had no idea.” I breathed a laugh. “Thank you.”
“What does that have to do with you being Theon’s mate?” He asked seriously, and I could even detect a hint of anger in his tone as his grip around my elbow tightened by a fraction.
I began to feel uneasy.
“Uhm, El once told me that people like me are destined to have more than one mate and some even
His brows furrowed again. “How is that possible?‘
“I don’t know. I just know I feel sparks with Theon just as much as I feel with you.”

His hand suddenly left my arm and that sort of poked my happiness bubble and made it smaller. “I guess you’re not happy with that news.”
Miro climbed to his feet, and I followed suit.
“I guess everything is overwhelming right now and I just need some time to think.”
I nodded and planted a quick smile to hide my wounded ego. “Yeah. Sure.” I looked away. “I have to go meet El.” I began to
step away.
“Wait.”
My heart soared as I stopped in my tracks. Maybe he wants to apologize. I turned around.
“Yeah?”
“Where did they take my brother?”
My hope deflated again.
“Downstairs. There’s a medvan outside attending to his wounds. Adam is arranging for transport back home, as soon as you arrive, it will leave.”
“Cool.” He replied, looking around again and the seconds of silence in between made me want to explode. “So you’re working with mutants now?”
I froze.
The tone in which he said it, like I was rolling with lowlifes. Where was the guy who confessed his love for me? Where was the Miro who kissed me just minutes ago?

Chapter 170
I guess Miro the Asshole is back. I raised my chin proudly, setting my jaw, “If you mean the ones who burst in here and saved both you and Theon’s asses? Then, yeah. I work with them now. They are my friends.”
He stared at me. His green eyes, cold and free of any emotion. Then he suddenly took a step forward. “You need to be careful.” He said but before he could say more, I heard my name
“KATHRYN ASHMORE!” El yelled, and my shoulders instantly came up as I winced and turned around. “Get your ass into archives, now!” She pointed towards the exit, before throwing a glare to Miro behind me.
I gave Miro one last look. “Glad you’re okay. See you at home.” And then I left with EL
Going down the stairs, I did my best to swallow my feelings as I sidestepped, the blood, scattered limbs and dead bodies of the scientists and security. Dealing with death was still a new territory for me and sometimes, I get the urge to retch but I hold it in.
Sometimes, I wonder if I’ll ever get as deadly as El who kills without batting an eye. Is that who I will eventually become? Is that what I want to become?
I sighed as we entered an oval room with about forty shelves taller than us and each having boxes arranged in rows in them. El led me past most of them until she stopped in the middle of the room where there were old school computers and video cassette players sitting on a table.
On the dusty table, was a box and on that box was a date.
A date going back fourteen years.
“In there are tapes and files with your name and some other random names.”
At her revelation, I rushed to the box and began to shift through the contents. True to her words, I found a file with my name on it, and then I found files with names like Adam Blackwell, Konan Caine, Theon Windermere, Sadie Cresswell.
I looked at El. “We need to take these.”
Just then, someone came in and we both turned around with our guns pointed.
Turns out it was Adam and immediately he saw our weapons, he raised his hands in surrender. “My father just deployed hundreds of hired security to this place. We need to leave at once.”
One glance at each other and El and I packed whatever we could from the table and rushed out of the room. Within minutes, we were out of the building and just when we got into Adam’s car, I looked back at the Ashlabs building with
- sadness in my heart.
I recognized it from one of my father’s properties and I think I have vague memories of visiting my father here and bringing him lunch with Mom. I closed my eyes, as Adam turned the ignition and began to drive.
The urge to break down again was becoming overwhelming.
First it was over Theon, then Miro, then Miro the Asshole and now Ashlabs.
Everything is starting to become too much to bear. Still, I forced everything down into a far far place wtihin. Now is not the time to be weak. Let me first get out here alive.
“What about the other guys?” I asked El.
“Safely just crossed the border. Including the medvan.”
I sighed in relief. At least Theon and Miro can get home safe.

“It’s just us left in the East.” El concluded and my heart began to hammer in prayer as Adam drove at an insane speed towards the border.
With just a few yards to freedom, we discovered East security had set up a checkpoint at the border and to my horror, we were heading straight towards them.
