Chapter 9
After an hour of working with Amanda in his office, Ryland quickly realized that getting rid of her would be a challenge. He could not fire her because she was far from lazy, and regarding her punctuality, she had proven to be punctual after arriving at his office before. Ryland himself.
Raising his hand, Ryland looked at his wrist watch and realized that he wase for a meeting in less than ten minutes. He stood up from his office chair and packed the 1t of the items
away.
“I am heading to the boardroom for a meeting with the investors; make sure that you arrive there on time and do not forget the presentation documents,” he said sternly.
“Yes, sir, I would be right there,” Amanda responded, with a bright smile on her face. Without saying another word to her, he walked out of his office, leaving Amanda all alone. His entire walk to the boardroom was filled with doom and gloom, as she could not understand how Amanda had managed to be this happy even when he was an unbearable boss.
Somewhere deep down, he could not help but think that his younger brother, Jay, was right; he needed to get away from Amanda. She was the kind of distraction that Ryland did not need at the moment.
In the Boardroom
“Mr. Scorpio, good morning.” Members of the board welcomed him as soon as he entered. Ryland hadn’t noticed either of their pleasantries since he had been so preoccupied with Amanda’s image that he had wandered idly to the head of the boardroom chair and taken a
seat.
He lifted his eyes and saw that there were eight left before the meeting began.
Bingo! He thought of himself happily. He would wait for the very moment that Amanda arrived late to the meeting, then he would unleash his anger on her and fire her on the spot.
Amanda packed the last of her things as she was readying herself to attend an important meeting. Just as she was about to leave, the door flung open, and Hannah walked into the
office.
Great! Amanda thought miserable as she saw her.
“Goodmorning, Hannah,” she greeted her. Although Amanda had tried her best to look

pleased, she could not, however, fake the misery that came along with being around. someone like Hannah.
Instead of replying to Amanda’s greeting, Hannah opted for looking at her from head to toe and then throwing a disgusted look in Amanda’s direction.
“Here,” Hannah said as she threw a stack of files onto Amanda’s desk.
“What are these?”

“These are the files that you were supposed to give your boss for this meeting; hurry bef you’re late,” Hannah said arrogantly. Her kind gesture left Amanda feeling slightly aware and suspicious.
“And why are you being this kind to me? I could have come to collect the files myself.”
“You have less than five minutes; I doubt you would have had time to make the copies of the presentation, so I thought, why not do it?”
“Why are you being so nice to me?” Amanda asked honestly. The moment that she stepped into the office, Hannah had made it her sole mission to make Amanda’s life a living hell. This random act of kindness left a bitter taste in Amanda’s mouth.
“I am not doing this for you; I am doing this for your boss. He has to impress the investors and the board; otherwise, he would lose the contract,” Hannah responded rudly before walking out of the office and slamming the door behind her.
Looking at the clock, Amanda saw that she had four minutes left, so she grabbed the files that Hannah had deposited on her table and sprinted out of the office.
Even when the noise was going on around him, Ryland had his attention on the wall. With just three minutes left on the clock, he prepared himself to fire Amanda on the spot. Just as he was about to enjoy his victory, the door to the boardroom opened, and Amanda walked in. As always, she had a bright smile on her face that left Ryland feeling bitter. His plans were completely destroyed, and now he would have to spend an extra day with Amanda in his office.

“Here you go, sir,” Amanda said softly as she deposited the files on the table before him.

The meeting had begun, and yet, Ryland could not stop looking at Amanda through his peripheral vision. He was captivating her. Her malinated skin glowed as the rays of the sun. made contact with it, and she licked her full lips whenever she was deep in thought. Oh, the things he wished she could do to her.
“Yes” Ryland answered, as he snapped out of his head when he realized that he was being called by one of the board members.
“It’s time to do your presentation, sir,” he was informed.
“Oh yes,” Ryland responded before walking over to the whiteboard, and in his hands he held the documents that Amanda had brought to him earlier. He had worked long and hard on his vision to build the perfect racecourse that would rival most racecourses. He needed this to work; otherwise, his father’s words would have been right.
“Good morning, fellow members and investors: today I present to you the dream course,” he said confidently.
Amanda sat on her chair in awe of her boss and the way in which Ryland smiled as he delivered his speech. Come to think of it, she had never seen him smile like this before. After speaking everyone applauded, and Ryland picked up the file that Amanda had handed to him earlier, and almost instantly, there was a blank expression on his face.
Almost instantly, Ryland turned his attention to Amanda, and both their eyes met, and there was a look of worry in his eyes. Sensing that something was wrong, Amanda jumped up from her seat and approached him.
“Is there something wrong?” she whispered. She watched as Ryland lowered his head to her

“I don’t know what happened, sir; believe me,” she pleaded in a low voice as she was almost on the brink of tears. Looking around, Ryland forced a smile the very moment he realized

“You will do the presentation,” he ordered her. Amanda watched with wide eyes as Ryland took his seat at the head of the table, leaving Amanda standing in front of the white board.
Breathe in, girl; you got it. She encouraged herself and turned to face the board and investors.
“Greeting everyone! My name is Amanda Samuels, and I will be your clown for today. I mean, at your service.” She cracked a joke so funny that everyone laughed, except Ryland. Seeing how relaxed everyone had become, Amanda had gathered the courage, and within no time, she had grabbed the attention of everyone.
Ryland watched in awe as Amanda spoke so passionately about his project of building the best racecourse that the world had ever seen before; it was as though she were the one who had spent countless hours preparing every intricate detail of the racecourse.
Her delivery was so moving and attention-grabbing that even Ryland sat at the edge of his
seat.
“I plead with you ladies and gentlemen to endorse this project because we will be making history that even our grandchildren will forever speak about. Thank you.” Amanda ended her speech, and to her surprise, everyone stood up with a round of applause for her.
Out of breath and in shock at the reaction she received, she turned her attention to Ryland, and even he was clapping his hands, but as always, he was not smiling. Soon after everyone had sat down and after voting, it was unanimously decided that the funding for the new race. course was approved.
The meeting had ended, and everyone walked out of the office, Amanda happily turned her attention to Ryland, and her smile faded. She had expected him to be happy about the deal that had been reached; instead, he stared at her as though he had something sour in his mouth.
Almost immediately, Amanda looked down at the carpeted floors. She knew that whatever she was about to say would not be good enough for her boss.
“What was that stunt that you pulled there?” He yelled at her to the point that she had no option but to look directly at him.

“I am so sorry, sir; it was just that, that,” she paused. Amanda wanted nothing more than to expose Hannah for the dirty trick that she had played on her, but she stopped herself. She had only been working at this office for two days, and she feared that Ryland would not believe her claim, mostly because his hatred for her was eviden
“What was it?”
“I am sorry, sir; I should have made sure that all the pages had been printed correctly,” she responded in a very low voice.
“You are lucky that this deal pulled through, because I would not only have fired you, but I would have made sure that no one in New York would want to hire you,” he told her angrily. She watched as he ran his hand through his hair, as though trying to calm himself. He paced the boardroom until he stopped in front of her again. “How did you know my plans for the ⚫ racecourse?” he questioned Amanda in a much calmer voice.
“I read through it yesterday.”
“Yesterday?”
“Yes, sir, yesterday when you left me to put together the files, and I guess I memorized everything,” she responded.
Ryland studied Amanda from head to toe, and in truth, he was enthralled not just by her good looks but also by her intelligence. While it had taken him months to compile and commit to memorizing the racetrack concept, Amanda had only needed a few hours to peruse it here.
“Make sure that this never happens again,” he told Amanda before walking away from her. But just as he was about to walk out, Ryland stopped and turned to look directly into Amanda’s eyes. “You will last longer in your position if you stop trusting people this much,” and just like that, he walked out, leaving Amanda to wonder if Ryland knew that she had been set up by Hannah.
Hannah’s office
Hannah grimaced as she looked out of her office window. She had stood guard outside of the boardroom, impatiently awaiting the board members and investors to come out of the boardroom upset, and to her dismay, they walked out happy.
“Feeling down that your plan did not go according to how you planned it,” Hannah froze as she heard Ryland’s voice.
