Chapter 84

“It’s nothing, my love.” Ryland responded while smiling at his beautiful wife, Amand. At this point, Ryland was about ready to do anything to make her comfortable. The last thing he wanted was Amanda thinking about what had happened at the gender revealed and how it led to her hospitalization. Ryland had the doctor promise that he would not disclose to Amanda that a few days prior, she had been poisoned. This was an effort to decrease the level of stress that she was already going through.

Looking at Ryland’s facial expression, Amanda refused to believe that he was telling the truth, and just when he was about to hug her, Amanda quickly wheeled her chair backwards, looking him dead in the eyes, a clear indication that she did not believe a single word that came out of Ryland’s mouth.

“What is the matter?” Ryland Isand asked, deeply concerned, as he looked at his wife, who was not smiling at him much longer. Her reaction was indeed a clear indication that Ryland was in more trouble than he thought he was in before.

“Ryland, I hate when he keep things from me. When I ask you to tell me something, its best that you tell me before I find out,” Amanda told Ryland, before breathing in and composing herself. “I know that you’re trying to protect me from what you consider harmful, but this is not it,“. She continued, her words, cutt piercing ing Ryland like a knife through the heart. He did not know how to deal with this matter. On the one hand, he wanted to tell Amanda the truth but on ther part of him wanted to protect her from anything in the world that would harm her or the baby.

“I did not know what you are talking about.” Ryland responded calmly. He had made up his mind that he was not about to tell Amanda the true reason for her hospitalization, to which Amanda eyed him.

“If you’re trying to protect me from the fact that I was poisoned at our gender reveal, then it’s slightly too late. Amanda responded. “I heard the nurses talking while I was asleep, so I pretty much understood everything,” Amanda added. Right then, Ryland felt like a failure.

Ryland ran his hands through his already messy hair as he paced the length of the kitchen before stopping in front of Amanda, and he looked very stressed, to say the least. “You do not know how much I have blamed myself for all this; if I had not insisted on having this gender revealed, this would not have happened,” he said, his face filled with guilt.

Amanda was pained by what Ryland said and thought. She saw pain through pain in his eyes and she could not believe that he had blamed himself for the incident. “You know that the poisoning incident could have happened to anyone and it was beyond your control. It is not your fault and I want you to remember that,” she said, trying her very best to assure Ryland that her words were not just words but they were true.

“I know what you’re trying to do, Amanda, but I cannot make myself believe otherwise. It’s my fault that this is happening; it’s even a bigger issue that we have not found the person who poisoned you at the gender reveal. But I promise you that I will not stop until that person is found right.” Ryland responded, and just then Amanda felt a great deal of worry at the look of the determination in Ryland’s eyes.

Part of her fear was that the search might lead Ryland to become violent, lose himself and become a person that he was not. She hated what anger had done to him in the past, and she refused to repeat that cycle with him.

“I think we should just let it go and move on without lives; it is best for all of us. Don’t you think?” she asked him while smiling, hoping that her smile would bring Ryland back, but it did no such thing as his determination to find the person deepened.

“Amanda, I think we should stop speaking about this. Our family in the living room are waiting for us to show up, and I think it’s very disrespectful of us to have our own conversation in the kitchen while leaving the rest of the family in the living room.” Ryland told her, and just then, Amanda realized that this was another way of his attempts to avoid the conversation entirely.

“Okay, Amanda answered, feeling slightly defeated that she could not change her husband’s mind even though she had showered him with love and understanding. Ryland walked up to Amanda and wheeled her back into the living room, where the two conversed with the rest of the family once again. Everyone was doing their best to pretend that everything was alright when it was clearly not. The more Amanda looked arouba she was saddened that everyone was walking around egg shewlls when it came to her.

One week later

Ryland smiled as he looked at the caller ID on his phone, just as Amanda hung up the phone. They had spoken for nearly thirty minutes on the phone, each professing their love for one another until Amanda had ended the call. Ryland threw himself onto his office chair, and looking at his wall clock, he realized that in a few minutes or so, Amanda would be in his office, and the two would leave for lunch with one another.

There was a knock on his door, to which Ryland raised his eyebrow and looked at the wall clock once again. It had only been five minutes since Amanda had called him, and for her to have made it tohis office that quick was surprising. Ryland was very surprised that Amanda had made it that quick. He quickly fixed his tie, shirt and straightened himself upon his leather office chair be saying; “Come in.”

Ryland had a bright smile on his face, and as the door opened to reveal who it was, the smile quickly faded, and he could not believe that Hannah was in his office.

“What are you doing here?” he asked angrily as Hannah walked into his office and shut the door behind herself. She was dressed in the same, professional manner with her handbag resting in front of her.

“Are you not going to greet an old friend?” She asked him in a low voice, trying his best to smile at him, but he was no more willing to return the smile because all he could see was hatred in his eyes for her.

“Old friends do not tip paparazzi to like a pictures of us at the bar and try to frame it as something which it is not. You tried to frame it like I was having an affair with you,” Ryland told Hannah, and just then, he saw the look of recognition on her face. After all, the detective had confirmed just that a few days ago.

“I apologize for that. I was in need of money and that was the only way I thought of making quick money.” She responded, looking very sorry for her behavior. Ryland knew better not be believe a single word came out of her mouth because lying was very common with her.

“No, thank you for apologizing. You may leave my office.” Ryland told her lastly before pointing his index finger at the door, behind her. He felt no putty pity for Hannah as she stood in front of him, with only the table creating the distance between them.

“You know what’s funny? I actually came here thinking that if you actually saw me one last time, you would… you would”

“Fall in love with you?” Ryland asked as he looked Hannah in the eyes, and just then, it was as if he saw a flesh of hope in her eyes. “Well, unfortunately for you, that will not be possible. I have told you before that I love my wife, and I think it’s best that you never come to my office again,” he said firmly, hoping that this time Hannah might understand his words clearly.

As the days passed, Ryland was beginning to tire of explaining to multiple women that he was happily married to Amanda and he would not be jeopardizing that for any woman, whether it was Hannah or Sofie, that thought they had a chance with

him.

“Wow! I guess you must really be in love with this Amanda girl. You know, it’s funny that while working with you, I always thought that Sofie would always be your number one woman. I had already made peace that I was always going to be second. It is comical that a mare personal assistant would come in and sweep you off your feet?” She said, laughing lightly, but Ryland was in no mood to entertain Hannah’s taunts or her pain.

“Well, now that you know that Amanda won my heart, I think you should leave,” he reiterated.

“Why can’t we just have a conversation like two friends. Are you scared of something?” Hannah asked. She smiled, slightly uncomfortable with every second of the tensed expression on his face.

“I’m not nervous, I’m just preparing for a special someone visit to come in today,” he responded, to which Hannah’s eyebrow was raised, silently questioning Ryland“. Let me make this clear for you: my wife is on her way here, and I would not want her to think that there’s something going on between me and you,” he explained,
