Chapter 77
There were days like this that Ryland regretted being in a public eye, because it made him open to scrutiny from the public. he had gotten out of bed like he did every other day, but just before he left his house, he was met with another envelope at the front of his door. Once he opened the envelope he found more pictures detailing the events of Ryland performing unthinkable acts with multiple women.
It had been hours since he had touched his laptop because he was unable to work. All he could think about was how all this would play out if Amanda ever found out about what he had been up to. Beside’s finding ways to keep this away from his wife, Ryland’s mind was occupied by both finding ways to hide those damning pictures and to find the person who was responsible for sending all the envelope to his home.
There was a knock on the on his door, Ryland looked up and contemplated whether to answer the person on the other end. of the door or to simply leave the person to knock until they got tired. “Come in!” he raised his voice. The door opened, only to reveal his secretary who before she could open the mouth to say anything, Sofie barged in and pushed her aside.
“Sir..” his secretary tried to explain, but Ryland raised his hand, signaling that it was fine, and within seconds, he indicated that his secretary leave his office, to which she obeyed and shut the door once she exited the office.
Ryland looked at Sofie from head to toe, and he was silent while she stood there smiling at him. For some reason, he was annoyed by every little movement she made, but in that very moment, he could not help but wonder if Sofie was responsible for the silent form of blackmailing.
“I apologize for bargingn into your office, but I knew that I had to see you. She explained to Ryland who did not seem interested in anything she had to say. He watched Sofie nervously hop from one side to another as if she urgently needed to use the restroom. On the other hand, anyone who saw her would see how uniterested Ryland was with this situation.
“Now that you forcefully made your way intomy office, tell me what it is that you want, and leave my office once you’re done.” He told her, and the smile on Sophie’s face faded once again. She was unable to believe that Ryland was no longer kind to her.
“Don’t you think you’re treating me badly?”She asked while walking towards his table.
“Stop right there!”He yelled at her as she was halfway to his table. Sofie was definitely scared because the Ryland looking at her was no longer the calm and collective. Looking at Ryland, Sofie saw nothing but hate for her.
Ryan pushed back his chair, stood up, and walked around his office desk before sitting on his desk and looking at Sofie as if sizing her up.
Sophie, on the other hand, was speechless; she did not know what was to come next. She knew that Ryland was upset her, and she couldn’t blame him after she had barged into his office, disregarding the secretary’s warning,
“Tell me, Sofie, was it fun?” He asked her, genuinely wanting to know, but Sofie, on the other hand, was confused by his question.

“Fun? I do not know what you’re talking about,” she responded, which left Ryland bursting aloud, and his reaction left Sofie feeling even more confused than she already was.
Ryland stopped smiling. He jumped off his desk and walked towards Sophie and looked her dead in the eyes.
“I’m just asking if it was fun when you left me for that old rich guy that left you with nothing after the divorce?” He asked her firmly. Sofie was too embarrassed to look in his eyes, she looked away. That was until Ryland placed his hand under her chin and forced her to look him in the eyes.
Ryland was unsure of what he saw in those eyes, but if he was correct, he could see regret and sympathy. This marriage had broken her, leaving Sofie with nearly nothing in her name and very little confidence.
“I have told you a hundred times that I apologize for what I have done, and if I could fix it, I would honestly make amends.” she explained with tears in her eyes, there was a time that those tears would weaken Ryland, but now that he looked at them,

He let go of her and stepped back, digging his hands into his pocket. That’s all he needed to hear from her. He needed his closure, and he needed it now.
“It is okay. I have forgiven you.” he shocked himself by saying those words, and just then, Sofie’s eyes lit up like a Christmas tree upon hearing that Ryland had forgiven her. She had for a long time, dreamnt of recieving forgiveness from Ryland and she had for long natured the hopes of the rekindling the old flame that burned between them.
“That is great. I always knew that you would forgive me,” she said before trying to wrap her arms around Ryland’s neck, but to her surprise, Ryland stepped away from her, and this left Sofie feeling confused.
“I think it’s best that you leave.” Ryland informed her. Sofie stared dead at him with a blank expression on her face. She could not believe tha Ryland was asking her out of the office.
“Why are you asking me out of your office? I thought you had forgiven me,” she said.
‘Rightfully so, I have forgiven you, I think you fail to remember that I am a married man and therefore I owe loyalty to my wife,” Ryland responded and his response left Sofie redening with anger.
“What is wrong with you?” She asked him angrily.
“There’s nothing wrong with me. I simply explained to you that I am a married man with a child on the way, and this behavior will not fit a married man.” He explained this to her, but Sofie was reluctant to accept his explanation.
“Oh, please save me that long story,because when we were in Bali, it was totally different. Don’t you remember”” she asked him while blowing a kiss at Ryland. Ryland’s anger rose, as Sfie reminded him of that faitjful night in Bali.He closed the space between Sofie and himself and looked down at her. Seeing Ryland this angry only made her realise that she had indeed angered him beyond whta she could manage. She saw the vein popping on the side of his head, and the clenching of his jaw as he looked down at her: her.
“Listen here, what happened between me and you in Bali was nothing but a mistake, and I’m sure that you know that. I will be damned to allow such an event to repeat itself again, but I warn you that if Amanda finds out about this, I wll make sure that you regret ever meeting me.” He warned her. One look at his eyes, and Sofie knew better than most to step back.
“But I still love you,” Sofie blurted out with so much passion in her voice but Ryland did not reciprocate her feelings. He simply stepped back and walk around his office desk, creating a space between Sofie and himself.
“Sofie, I will not say this again. You had your chance, and you blew it. It’s six years gone, and I think I need to move on with my life, and so do you.” He told her, a few months ago these words would have been difficult for him to say, but now that he said them, Ryland felt more at peace that he had been while holding onto his past with Sofie.
“But what if I…” she tried speaking.
“Sofie, I will not say this again. A relationship between you and myself will never work, and it’s my time that you accept that. Now please leave my office and do not make me repeat myself again.” he ordered her. Sofie stood on the spot frozen. She felt like a knife hadbeen lodged into her heart. He watched impatiently, waiting for Sofie to heed to his orders and she finally exited his office, Ryland was relieved to have her leave.
Having Sofie leave his office had provided Ryland with just the right amount of closure that he needed. He had finally made the big move of letting Sofie go, and now he needed to move on with his life with Amanda and their child on the way.
As for the person that has been threatening Ryland with damning images of him in Bali making out with Sofie, Ryland knew how he would deal with such a person, for now he had much more important things to do. He had a serious task at hand and that task was to explain his actiosn to the board and giving them reasons as to why he had attacked Stephen Benson at his office.
Although he was the boss of the company, Ryland knew that he too had people to answer to, deep down, he hoped that his investors were still interested in partnering with him to build his dream race track.

Ryland looked at his phone and realized that he had received twelve missed calls from his lawyer, and this left him wondering if anything had gone wrong.
