Chapter 74
Amanda had snuck out of the house, and she was on a mission mission to get to the bottom of this matter. Yesterday, her husband, Ryland, had been dragged out of Stephen’s office building like some thief. This morning, Ryland’s face was plastered all over the TV screen.
Luckily for them, Stephen had opted to take the money rather than pursue the matter in court.
Upon arriving at Stepehn’s office building, Amanda was left shocked to discover that the building was less busy than it always. had been. The security man at the main door was nowhere in sight, and neither was the head receptionist. Taking in a deep breath, Amanda walked into the elevator and waited until the doors shut.
“You can do this.” She hyped herself up as she waited for the doors of the elevator to open. Once the doors opened, Amanda walked out. The floor of Stephen’s office, which was always busy, looked empty, with very few employees in their cubicles.
“Hello, could I please…”
“Mr. Benson is in his office, up ahead,” one of the employees cut her short. A new face that Amanda had not seen before. Wasting little time, Amanda made her way to Stephen’s office. Stopping by the entrance of his door, she heard noise coming from within the office, as if he were arguing with someone.
Raising her hand, Amanda knocked on the door, hoping for a response.
“Come in!” Stephen yelled angrily from within the office. Amanda did not have to look into the office to know that it was Stephen who was shouting like that; she had worked for him for years, and she could tell when he was distressed, and from the sound of his voice, he was definitely distressed.
Taking a deep breath, Amanda pressed down the door handle and walked into the office. Stephen was on the phone with his back turned to her, and he was tapping his foot onto the floor like a maniac.
“What do you mean I cannot have another loan?” He yelled and slammed his hand against his desk, a quick reaction that was enough to scare Amanda so much that she hitched.
Stephen quickly turned around as if he were about to yell at whomever it was that disturbed him, but just as he saw her face, his facial features softened.
“I will call you back,” he said as he discontinued the call. He smiled as if seeing Amanda was the best thing that had happened to him this week. Amanda, on the other hand, did not seem too pleased to see him.
“Amanda, you’re here,” he said, still smiling. Looking at the angry look on Amanda’s face, Stephen stopped smiling.
“I know why you are here, and I can assure you that it is not my fault,” he explained. Amanda, on the other hand, rolled her eyes, and she was too angry to even lend Stephen a listening ear. “That husband of yours is an animal that cannot control himself, at will.”
“Enought! I do not think you know who you are talking abiut, but you are referring to my husband!” she yelled. Her voice echoed throughout the room, and even Stephen was stunned at how loud Amanda could get when she wanted to.
“Amanda…”
“I am not done talking!” She raised her voice once more, and even Stephen knew that it was best that he say nothing else to avoid Amanda’s anger. “Don’t you ever insult my husband in my presence? Do you hear me? I am not here to have a long conversation with you; rather, I am here to warn you to leave me and my husband alone,” she warned.
Looking into Amanda’s eyes, he knew very well that Amanda was no longer the meek girl that he used to know when she had first started working for him.
“I have not done anything to your husband; rather, it is your husband who came to my office to attack me.”

“Oh, please say that to someone who wants to listen to you. You have always been a liar, and you will always be a liar. I will never believe you again, and it’s you who is trying to destroy my husband and his businesses,” Amanda pointed to her index finger him, and Stephen, who stared at Amanda because he was confused by her words,
“Trying to destroy his business?” He asked while staring at Amanda with a confused expression on his face. “I do not know what you’re talking about; in fact, I was actually trying to get him to consider me as an investor in his project,” Stephen explained. He watched as Amanda walked away from him and made her way towards the exit before stopping.
“I did heard what you said, I did not believe a single word that came out of your mouth, but I will warn you to stop trying to sabotage my business by getting investors to not invest in his race track. Ryland has worked hard for this, and I will not have you trying to ruin his happiness.” Amanda said, Just then, Stéphan scuffed.
“Happiness? Please save me that nonsense, because I know that you were much happier with me than you are with him, and you know that, in fact, I find it quite strange that you went for someone like Ryland he’s so uptight to be honest. I thought you could do much better, “he said, laughing.
“Believe me, Stephen, any man at this point is better than having a cheater like you who could not only keep me but could not keep his wife as well.” Amanda fired back. Those words were a low blow below the belt, and knowing that her words were enough to hurt Stephen, she could see the smile wiped off his face, and just then she knew that she had done her worst.
“I will admit that I did deserve some of that, but I wish I could show you that your husband is lying to you. Not once have I spoken to an investor and tried to make his investment look bad. If I were you, I’d be careful of a man like Ryland.” Stephen warned her. She rolled her eyes and crossed her hand over her chest as she was beyond furious that Stephen stood in front of her, and openly lying about Ryland in such a manner.
“On what grounds do I have to believe you? You have never been the truthful type in the first place.” Amanda said, and just then, Stephen dropped his head in front of her. Months ago, he’d had Amanda by his side and now due to his own mistakes, he had led her into the arms of another man.
“Amanda, I can assure you that Ryland is lying to you. Okay, he came here to fight me for things not related to the business.” Stephen explained, hoping deep down that Amanda would at least lend him a listening ear.
“And what exactly was this thing that he came to speak to you about Amanda?” Stephen opened his mouth to explain, but he then stopped himself once he realized that Amanda standing in front of him determined to defend Ryland at all costs and that nothing he would most likely say would change her mind towards him.
“I think it’s best that you go home and speak to your husband, and maybe he’ll tell you exactly why he came all the way to my office to fight me.” Stephen told her, and just then, he watched Amanda laugh out loud before stopping and looking him directly in the eyes.
“Do you see what I mean? You can’t even tell the truth because you know you will lie.” Amanda, said, before turning and walking out of Stephen’s office and slamming the door behind herself.
Seeing Amanda leave in such a bad mood hurt Stephen more than he could have imagined, but what angered him most was that Ryland had lied to the woman he claimed to love, and that left Stephen feelings suspicious about Ryland and wondering what his motives were.
He could not for the life of him understand why Ryland simply did not tell Amanda the true reasons why he came over to Stephen’s office to fight him; that alone left him feeling suspicious as his mind wondered what kind of relationship Ryland and Amanda had behind closed doors.
Just like clock work, the phone in his pocket began to ring, and just when Stephelooked at it and saw the caller ID, it was the bank calling him yet again, Amanda’s visitation had bee a slight distraction to the turmoil that was going around both his personal life and his business. The last thing Stephen wanted to answer was another banker informing him that another one of his loans had been rejected or that the bank was simply calling to inform him that he needed to make payments on one thing or another.
Stephen pulled out his phone, threw it onto the floor and watched it shatter. The money that he had won over from Ryland was not enough to cause a dent in the massive crater of financial mess he was in.

Stephen walked over to his telephone, and just as he was about to pick up the phone to call his secretary. He was quick to realize that those days were gone, and most of his staff he had fired and now he had no secretary, and that was exactly the reason why Amanda had walked through the office without anyone stopping her or asking for any form of identification.
