Chapter 761
Gloria sighed softly. “I hope Joe and Skye can get along well. If they do, I’ll be at ease.” Edgar nodded in agreement. “They will be, I’m sure. They both seem to be doing well.”
Vera’s car was parked by the roadside under the streetlight as she inspected the front.
She caught sight of Joe’s car in her peripheral vision. Her vehicle was hard to miss, even at night, and as she anticipated, Joe’s car pulled to a stop next to hers. They hadn’t been able to talk at Pearlhall Residence.
Joe didn’t get out. Instead, Lucas stepped out and approached her. “Ms. Ruell, is there something wrong with your car?”
Vera’s posture tensed slightly, her expression turning a bit rigid. Her eyes involuntarily shifted toward the car as she wondered why Joe wasn’t getting out.
Lucas, thinking the wind might have carried away his words, repeated, “Ms. Ruell, is your car having issues? Let me take a look.”
“It’s probably just broken down,” Vera replied absentmindedly, though she wondered if Joe was trying to avoid raising suspicion. The distance from Pearlhall Residence was significant.
Lucas immediately began inspecting the car.
Meanwhile, Joe stayed in his car, his eyes on his phone. The screen displayed his WhatsApp conversation, with Skylar. When he looked up, he saw Vera walking toward him.
She tapped on his window twice, signaling him to roll it down.
Joe obliged.
Vera said with a touch of apology, “It seems I’ll have to hitch a ride with you. My car can’t be fixed right away.”
Just then, Lucas approached. “Mr. Martin, I can’t repair Ms. Ruell’s car right now.”
Joe responded, “Alright, get in.”
As Vera reached for the car door, Lucas opened the passenger seat for her. “Please, Ms. Ruell.”
Vera’s expression stiffened for a moment, but she quickly regained her composure. “Okay, thank you.”
Meanwhile, a nearby camera captured the entire scene
“Finally, we’ve got a shot of Martin Group CEO’s rumored affair.”
“That woman is Vera Ruell, the young lady from the Ruell family who just returned from abroad.”
“What a perfect match!”
“This news will definitely make headlines.”
Skylar and Janine were watching TV together.
After some chatting, Janine sighed about the news of Sadie being killed by Peter. She couldn’t help but
think of Maisy. However, she made sure not to mention Maisy in front of Skylar.
Chapter 761
2/2
After all, the path she chose was her own to walk. As for Maisy’s future, Janine could only hope for the best, wishing Maisy would make a better life for herself.
The TV show playing was Skylar’s favorite–a family drama.
The scene revolved around a father, away for more than a decade, coming home in frail condition. Stunned and harboring deep resentment, his wife and children were unwilling to accept him.
Having been left by his former mistress, the father returned alone and haunted by memories of the family he had abandoned.
“Skye, if it were you, do you think you could forgive him?” Janine wondered aloud, her thoughts wandering back to the vague figure she had noticed in the hospital.
Chapter 762
Skylar kept her gaze fixed on the TV, her answer firm. “No.”
She would never forgive him. This scoundrel had abandoned his wife and children for years, all in the name of chasing his so–called true love.
After disappearing for over a decade, he suddenly wanted to come back now that the kids were grown. He had been with his mistress all this time. Did he think his ex–wife was just a dumping ground for his past mistakes?
He had neglected his wife and children for years, giving his best years to his mistress. Now, he should let
the mistress and their child care for him.
Janine wasn’t surprised by Skylar’s response. A small smile crossed her lips. She wondered to herself how, even with age, she still seemed so idealistic.
The person she saw in the hospital must not have been who she imagined. That person certainly wasn’t the irresponsible character depicted on TV.
“Mom, what about you? If you were the original wife on TV, would you forgive him?” Skylar asked.
Janine hesitated briefly, then smiled and said, “Do I really need to say it? A man who’s that irresponsible is repulsive. He should keep his distance.”
“Exactly, Mom.” Skylar nodded vigorously. Her adoptive mother was kind, but she had a sharpness that kept others from taking advantage.
Janine and Skylar watched another episode of the show.
When it ended, Skylar headed to the bathroom. But before she could come out, there was a knock on the
door.
Sitting on the couch and leaning on her crutch, Janine tried to stand up. “Who’s there?”
Old buildings lacked soundproofing, so her voice was clearly audible outside.
“It’s me, Mom.”
Initially, the voice sounded a bit unfamiliar, but Janine quickly recognized it. “Is that you, Joe?”
“Yes, it’s me.” Joe’s voice came through the door again!
Janine immediately adjusted her stance, leaning on her crutch to open the door.
Skylar just emerged from the bathroom. She said, “Mom, let me get that. You sit down.”
“Alright,” Janine replied. She returned to her seat and set her crutch aside. It was her first time using a crutch, so she was somewhat unaccustomed to it.
Skylar opened the door and saw Joe standing there, holding health supplements in both hands. She never expected to see him carrying health supplements and couldn’t help but smile slightly at the sight.
“What brings you here?” she asked instinctively.
Joe raised an eyebrow, wondering if he wasn’t welcome.
In his usual calm manner, he answered, “I came to visit my mother–in–law.”
Skylar had momentarily forgotten that Joe was now Janine’s son–in–law. Realizing this, she belatedly reached for the health supplements.
Chapter 762
2/2
“It’s alright,” Joe said, not allowing Skylar to take them from him. They weren’t heavy, after all.
Janine smiled at Joe. “Joe, come in. Skye will get your slippers.”
Skylár immediately fetched the slippers.
As Joe changed into the slippers, he glanced at Skylar with a solemn look before walking over to sit on the couch.
Skylar found his gaze puzzling. She pondered what that look meant.
There was something about that look that made her feel guilty, as if she had wronged or hurt him in some
way.
“It’s nothing serious. The doctor said it’s just a matter of rest. Skylar is overly concerned. You and Skye should head back; I can manage on my own,” Janine said.
Joe nodded. “I’m glad to hear you’re okay, Mom. I’ll stay here with Skye for the next few days to help take care of you.”
“What?” Skylar was surprised he was going to stay.
Chapter 763
Observing Skylar’s astonished look, Janine felt something was amiss. She wondered why Skye seemed to not want Joe to stay. Did they argue?
Janine lowered her head, contemplating for a moment before deciding, “Alright, Joe can stay here.”
Joe nodded, his gaze fixed on Skylar.
Despite her confusion about Joe’s behavior, Skylar acted as though she hadn’t noticed. It made sense for him to visit her mother, but his decision to stay over was puzzling. She questioned if their relationship was close enough to warrant this and if he was mindful of the possibility of misunderstandings, particularly her own.
That night, they lay on a bed barely five feet wide. Joe’s presence made it feel even smaller.
Unlike the Galaxy Villa, an uncomfortable awkwardness lingered. For a moment, silence reigned.
When Joe’s arm reached out, Skylar jolted upright. She whispered, “The room isn’t soundproof.”
The master bedroom and guest room were separated only by a thin wall with no sound insulation.
Joe chuckled softly and withdrew his arm, resting his hands behind his head. He smirked, “Why do I get the feeling you’re deliberately reminding me the room isn’t soundproof? Trying to make things a bit more interesting?”
“Not that it’s not possible,” he quickly added.
Skylar’s face flushed. “Be quiet.”
His suggestive words were disconcerting. Thankfully, he kept his voice down. If Janine had heard, Skylar would never have been able to face her again.
Joe’s eyes twinkled with amusement. “The bed may be small, but it could offer a different experience. Wouldn’t you like to try it?”
“Joe! Do you really think I won’t kick you out?” Skylar gritted her teeth.
She wondered where the aloof, self–controlled man she knew had gone. The Joe who usually maintained a cold demeanor now seemed completely different.
Skylar couldn’t help but think that whenever Joe got into bed, he turned into someone entirely unlike his usual self.
Noting that he’d pushed his teasing to its limit, Joe pulled Skylar into an embrace and instructed, “Stop moving.”
If she kept wriggling, he might actually do something about it. As he lay next to her in bed, he felt no urge to restrain himself.
Skylar bit her lip and lay still in Joe’s embrace.
The next morning, Skylar and Joe had breakfast together at Yancey Residence.
Janine had risen early and, leaning on her crutch, prepared a simple breakfast.
I’ve said that I can take care of myself. You both should get back to work. Don’t fret about me; I’m fine at home, even if I can’t go downstairs. You can be assured.”
“Mom, don’t worry about lunch. I’ll order some delivery. In the evening, I’ll pick up groceries and cook
Chapter 763

when I get back,” Skylar said, still feeling uneasy.
After considering it, Janine didn’t object. She could handle lunch but agreed to let Skylar take care of it to ease her worries.
Once Skylar and Joe left for work, Janine turned on the TV. The rerun of the drama Janine and Skylar had watched the previous night played on the screen.
As she watched the unfaithful male lead, her thoughts wandered back to a figure she’d seen the day before. She smiled and shook her head. “Why do I seem to be getting more imaginative as I age?”
Then, she picked up the remote and changed the channel.
That morning, Joe didn’t have Lucas pick him up. Instead, he walked downstairs and got into Skylar’s car.
Skylar glanced at Joe, who was seated in the passenger seat.
“Are you looking at me like that because you’re hoping I’ll kiss you?” Joe asked, his mood buoyed by the good night’s sleep they’d shared.
With a forced smile, Skylar said, “I was just considering that my bed might not be quite large enough for someone as esteemed as you, Mr. Martin. I wouldn’t want you to be uncomfortable.”

Chapter 764
Skylar had barely slept the night before. Joe had used her as a human pillow, pinning her down and making it impossible for her to move. Furthermore, the heat was oppressive, like being trapped in a sauna during the summer.
She had to layer on concealer to hide the dark circles under her eyes and chugged a large cup of coffee just to function. Without it, she wasn’t sure how she’d get through the day.
“Don’t worry. I don’t mind the discomfort,” Joe replied quickly..
Skylar forced a tight smile.
The traffic was light, so she dropped Joe off at Martin Group and then headed to work.
The moment she clocked in, Steven and Charles called to check on Janine’s condition. They were swamped but promised to bring lunch later in the day.
Afterward, Skylar dove into her work.
After lunch, she returned to the office, ready to tackle the day’s tasks. Just as she was about to start repairs, Caleb burst in. “Skylar, come with me. My grandfather called earlier and he’s fuming. He hasn’t even touched his lunch. When I asked him what’s wrong, he just glared and wouldn’t say who upset him or why.”
A few minutes later, Skylar met with Alexander. His face was clouded with anger.
“I contacted the grandfather of that Ruell girl. Although we’re not close, we’ve known each other for years and have some level of understanding.
“I never expected him to dismiss me as senile, claiming I was out of touch and that those ancient artifacts couldn’t possibly be powerful. It’s infuriating! was just trying to help, and it blew up in my face!”
In Jipsburg, few would dare disregard his authority. It was shocking that a distant acquaintance would reject his credibility.
“Well, if that’s how it is, Grandpa, don’t let it get to you. If they prefer to dive headfirst into trouble, let them. If anything major happens, they shouldn’t expect you or Skylar to get involved,” Caleb remarked.
Skylar filled a cup with water from the nearby dispenser and set it on Alexander’s desk. “What’s meant to happen will happen. You’ve fulfilled your responsibility by warning them, so there’s no reason to feel guilty. “You’re right.” Alexander’s expression softened. He seemed more at ease.
He was known for his integrity and didn’t want to stand idly by while some families in Jipsburg were schemed against. But after his warning was met with skepticism, he decided it was best to step back. Continuing to interfere would be seen as meddling.
Meanwhile, Caleb was at a loss for words. No matter how he tried to convince Alexander, it was futile. Only Skylar’s words seemed to have any effect.
After Denton ended his call with Alexander, his displeasure was evident. It was the kind of frustration that came from being criticized.
When Alexander’s call came through, Vera was present. She had previously told Denton about her observations at the auction, leading Denton to form a poor impression of Alexander. As a result, Denton
Chapter 764
was disinclined to discuss much further after taking the call.
“Mr. Gardner Senior is really getting old. How can he believe in such nonsense at his age?” Vera said, displeased. Her plan to surprise her grandfather was derailed by Alexander’s call.
2/2
Though Denton was also irritated, he managed a smile at Vera. “It’s quite common. As people age and grow more afraid of death, they often start believing in all sorts of irrational things.
“Mr. Gardner Senior might be distinguished and esteemed, but that doesn’t mean I lack competence. Being away from the company’s affairs has enabled me to delve into antiques, and he was likely just misled.”
“I’ve learned a lot from you since I was young. Now that you’re aware of this, I’ll arrange for someone to bring the items over so you can examine them properly,” Vera quickly offered.
“Alright, have them sent over.”
An hour later, a household staff delivered a roll of antique paintings to Denton.
Denton was an avid collector of ancient paintings and spent his free time admiring his collection. He had heard George’s building was filled with various antiques and believed his collection far surpassed anything George could boast.
“I’ll unroll it for you,” Vera said, carefully unfolding the antique painting.
Chapter 765
1/2
At home, the antique painting looked even better than it had at the auction.
Its traditional charm was irresistible. The artwork depicted portraits of people and scenes from daily life, creating the illusion of stepping into another world.
Vera was equally enchanted by it, while Denton gazed at it in silence for a long time. Finally, he slapped his thigh and exclaimed, “Excellent! This is a marvelous painting. It surpasses any of the ones I’ve collected before.”
“I’m glad you like it, Grandpa.”
“This is the best birthday gift I’ve received this year.”
It was rare for Denton to show such enthusiasm. This was the first time Vera had
seen him so animated. His reaction confirmed that he truly appreciated the gift, and Vera felt relieved for winning the painting at the auction.
She hadn’t expected Alexander’s pettiness after losing the bid on the painting he wanted to give Skylar, he complained to her grandfather. He even claimed the two items she had bought were cursed and would bring misfortune, but to Vera, they were just fine pieces. She couldn’t see where any trouble could arise.
Jenny finally had a private moment with Joe in the underground parking lot. Seeing him brought back all the recent turmoil, and her eyes filled with tears. “Joe…”
Before college, they didn’t see each other daily but met frequently. Even after she moved to Korel City, he visited her at college. Although he only came when she was hospitalized, it still showed that he cared–so being neglected now felt particularly hurtful.
Paul noticed Jenny’s reddened eyes and quickly scanned their surroundings. Thankfully, no one else was nearby.
“Is something wrong?” Joe asked.
As a tear rolled down Jenny’s cheek, she quickly wiped it away. “I’m just… I’ve been dealing with a lot at work lately and am starting to doubt myself. Since you taught me so much when I was younger, I wanted to see you first.”
Her eyes were earnest, revealing no hidden motives.
Paul was perplexed by Jenny’s transformation since returning to Jipsburg. He wondered if she truly believed a seemingly plausible excuse could conceal her
Chapter 765
intentions. If he could discern her deception, Joe, with his keen intuition, would surely see through it as well.
2/2
“There’s no need to doubt yourself. Just focus on doing your job well,” Joe said. He Towered his gaze and maintained his usual demeanor.
Joe questioned whether crying over work issues was helpful. Had he ever taught her
that?
Jenny was stunned. “Joe, can we have dinner together?”
“Concentrate on gaining experience and honing your skills. There’s no need for dinner,” Joe said before turning and walking away.
Paul didn’t follow Joe. Noting Jenny’s clear dissatisfaction, he gently advised, “Ms. Scott, staying with the Martin Group might not be the best use of your time. Mr. and Mrs. Martin have a solid relationship. It might be better to focus your efforts elsewhere.”
Jenny bit her lip, her expression hardening. After a moment, with tears forming in her eyes, she looked at Paul and said, “I’m not sure I understand what you meant.”
Chapter 766
Paul stood there, dumbfounded. “Fine, if you didn’t get it, then forget I said anything.”
He waved his hand dismissively, signaling the end of the conversation.
Paul thought Jenny was overly confident, believing herself so clever that no one could see through her intentions.
Jenny stood there, her face pale and her tears long since dried.
Joe had already driven off.
Joe had recommended that she focus on learning and improving her job skills. Jenny couldn’t help but wonder if she truly lacked abilities, considering how she had managed to get into Martin Group in the first place.
Her skills might not rival Paul’s, but they were still noteworthy. Joe simply didn’t see her potential.
“Is Skylar the only one you care about now?” Jenny’s voice dripped with bitterness.
But it wasn’t just Skylar–Vera had also returned. Another wave of jealousy surged through Jenny. Everyone else seemed to have a place in Joe’s life, while she felt left out. However, she refused to accept being sidelined.
Just then, her phone rang. Seeing the caller ID, Jenny’s demeanor changed instantly. It was Molly.
“Mrs. Martin,” Jenny answered with a respectful tone.
“Did you deliver the pen I asked you to give Joe?” Molly didn’t bother with
pleasantries, getting straight to the point.
“Yes, I placed it on Joe’s desk a few days ago,” Jenny replied.
“Good. You’ve done well, Jenny. I’ve always had a high opinion of you, and Joe’s
father is also very pleased. Do you have time today? Come over for dinner,” Molly’s voice softened, speaking like a kind and caring elder.
When an elder extended an invitation, it was impossible to refuse.
Jenny was quick to respond. She didn’t want to upset Molly. “Of course, Mrs. Martin. I just finished work. I’ll head over right away.”
The last time she met Edwin and Molly, Jenny sensed their dislike for Skylar. Now that they trusted her enough to invite her to dinner, she knew she had a real opportunity. She wasn’t concerned about Vera or Skylar.
After Molly hung up, she instructed the household staff to prepare dinner and then went upstairs. She knocked a few times before entering.
“Jenny will be here shortly,” she informed Edvin.
Edwin looked up, a spark of anticipation in his eyes. “Good, make sure everything is
set.”
Molly hesitated, feeling uneasy. “Are you sure about this, darling?”
She had known about Edwin’s past relationships but had chosen to ignore them. It was easier to pretend they didn’t exist. However, Edwin’s planning to entertain women at home this time made her uneasy.
Edwin’s expression darkened. “Sure about what?”
young. Plus,
“She’s a girl your son raised. She just graduated from college and is still she’s clearly in love with Joe. If things-” Molly trailed off, struggling to find the right words.
Edwin interrupted impatiently, “Enough. No need to discuss it further. There’s no room for negotiation. Don’t let anything go wrong.”
“Alright,” Molly sighed.
Skylar and Joe arrived at Yancey Residence.
Janine was sitting on the couch, watching TV.
“Steven and Charles came by in the afternoon. They bought a lot of groceries and cooked several dishes before they left. All you need to do is heat them up,” Janine said as they entered and changed into their slippers.
Skylar responded with a smile, saying, “Okay.”
Then, she went directly to the kitchen. The kitchen counter was filled with several dishes made by Steven. They only needed to be warmed in the microwave before
eating.
Joe followed her into the kitchen.
“How do we heat this? I’ll handle it,” Joe offered.
He glanced at the microwave. He had never used one before and wasn’t sure how it
worked.
Skylar chuckled. “No need. I’ll take care of it. This is an old model microwave, and I’m
Chapter 766
used to it.’

Once they moved to their new house, they would have brand–new appliances, which would be easier to use.

Chapter 767
Joe didn’t insist further. He stood by with his hands in his pockets, his gaze fixed on
Skylar.
Once Skylar finished microwaving the dishes, she noticed Joe still lingering in the kitchen. “Please take the dishes out. Dinner’s ready,” she instructed.
“Sure,” Joe replied.
Joe wasn’t exactly the ideal husband type who excelled at housework, but he didn’t mind sharing the chores with Skylar. She cooked; he cleaned. Now that she had heated up the food, he was happy to help out by bringing it to the table.
Skylar gave him a small smile.
Joe’s picture–perfect husband image was short–lived. While he was in the shower, Skylar found a gossip article with the headline, “Secret Couple Unmasked: Their Identities Revealed!”
The article exposed Joe, the CEO of Martin Group, and Vera, the eldest daughter of the Ruell family, as the perfect couple. Photos showed Vera getting into Joe’s car, and sitting in the front passenger seat–an unmistakable sign of her special status.
“Joe’s girlfriend, Vera, exposed for the first time!”
“This is truly a perfect match!”
“This couple is simply perfect together!”
The buzz surrounding them was even hotter than a celebrity relationship reveal.
Natalie, always quick to catch wind of gossip, messaged Skylar on WhatsApp.” What’s going on? Not only did Joe never announce your marriage, but now it looks like he’s cheating on you. This is too much! Skye, don’t be afraid.”
Having been betrayed herself, Natalie was worried Skylar might get hurt. What made it worse was how blatant Joe was being, openly flaunting his relationship with Vera as if to make it clear Skylar was easily replaceable.
Skylar could imagine how furious Natalie was. “These photos and news don’t mean much. At worst, Joe and I might end up divorced.”
Natalie felt relieved. “It’s good that you two don’t have strong feelings for each other.”
Skylar’s eyes shifted. “Yes, it’s fortunate that we don’t have any strong feelings. Let’s not talk about it now. He’ll be back from the shower soon,” she texted.
Chapter 767
2/2
Skylar exited her WhatsApp.
Joe didn’t notice anything unusual about her. He was drying his hair with a small towel, still damp from the shower.
Since they weren’t at Galaxy Villa and had to share the bathroom with the family, Joe put on his pajamas directly in the restroom, which left him slightly uncomfortable from the lingering moisture.
“There’s a villa near our place that belongs to me. We can move Mom there,” Joe said, looking at Skylar.
When he noticed her distant expression and the change in her demeanor, his eyebrows raised slightly. She had seemed fine before he went to shower. He wondered why she was suddenly so serious.
Skylar declined his offer. Her tone was flat as she said, “Thank you, but I recently bought a house. My mom will be able to move in soon.”
Fortunately, the place she bought was spacious, with plenty of rooms. After the divorce, she could simply move there.
The photo showcased Vera in a breathtaking manner, making her appear dazzling and captivating. However, Joe wasn’t in the photo; it merely showed Vera getting into the car as the door was about to close.
Joe’s expression darkened. His tone grew colder. “Is something wrong?”
“Shouldn’t we schedule a time to visit the courthouse? There are a lot of divorces happening lately. We should set a date,” Skylar said, meeting his gaze directly. She wanted to take control of the situation and not just react to whatever came her way.
Chapter 768
Skylar was overwhelmed by the flood of gossip and news, feeling powerless in the midst of it all. The thought of someone discussing true love as if it were priceless only deepened her dread.
Joe’s gaze darkened as he looked at Skylar. Do you want a divorce?”
Skylar smiled. “Isn’t that what you want?”
Her encounters with Vera had left her feeling stung by the woman’s open disdain. To Vera, Skylar likely appeared nothing more than a disgraceful mistress.
Joe’s expression hardened, and he said nothing as he dressed. Before leaving, he remarked, “We’ll discuss the divorce after the contract ends.”
Once Joe had gone, Janine knocked and entered the room. She asked cautiously,” Why did Joe leave so suddenly?”
Despite her inner turmoil, Skylar’s face remained impassive. “He had something urgent to attend to and won’t be back tonight. It’s late, so you should get some rest, Mom.”
Janine nodded but remained worried. “Be honest with me. Did you two have an argument? This visit feels different from the last one.”
Skylar admitted, “There have been some unpleasant moments, but it’s nothing serious. We’ll sort it out. Don’t worry, Mom.” Although she hadn’t anticipated Janine noticing, she chose not to deny it.
Reassured by Skylar’s openness, Janine felt better. She believed that newlyweds often faced adjustments and minor conflicts, which was normal.
“Alright, I’ll go rest. Remember, communication is key. Don’t let misunderstandings fester; even small ones can strain your relationship. I’ve been through it and
understand how important it is.”
Janine offered this heartfelt advice before heading to bed.
Skylar lay in bed, reflecting on Janine’s words. She realized that even minor misunderstandings could lead to more significant issues and recognized the need for a serious conversation with Joe. She planned to address things openly once they were back at the Galaxy Villa.
Dinner lasted over an hour at the Moran Residence. Jenny arrived and waited for
Chapter 768

about half an hour before dinner began.
Edwin and Molly were unusually kind tonight, asking her many questions, which she answered honestly.
As dinner was wrapping up, Edwin inquired, “Did you have any boyfriends in college?”
Molly added with a smile, “With your looks, you must have had quite a few suitors in college.”
With a hint of blush, Jenny replied shyly, “No, I dedicated myself to my studies in college. While there were some who showed interest, I wasn’t interested in them. To me, no one else could compare to Joe.”
This was the truth. Compared to Joe, the boys at college seemed ordinary, and none could measure up to his level, let alone Rowan’s
She couldn’t risk having any blemishes on her reputation, so she turned down everyone who pursued her. That was why she was confident in truthfully answering that she had never had a boyfriend.
When Edwin heard her say no one compared to Joe, his expression subtly changed A hint of dissatisfaction colored his tone, though Jenny didn’t notice it. “Yes, Joe is certainly remarkable.”
Molly sipped her tea, keeping her head down. She understood Edwin well; although Joe was his son, Edwin resented the praise, feeling it reflected poorly on his own standing. He was supposed to command respect and run the Martin Group, but Joe had taken over his position, leaving Edwin feeling overshadowed and bitter.
Jenny glanced at the clock. It was 10:00 pm. “It’s getting late, so I’ll leave you both to rest. If you need any help, I’ll be more than willing to assist.”
When she finished speaking and stood up, she felt dizzy, perhaps from standing too quickly.
She even struggled to keep her balance.
Chapter 769
Jenny said, “I…”
Molly quickly supported Jenny. “Are you feeling unwell?”
Jenny shook her head. “I… I’m not sure. I’m feeling a bit dizzy. It should be nothing
serious.”
She tried to leave, but the dizziness intensified with each step. Struggling to keep her balance, her expression shifted. “I… I think I might be getting sick. Could you call 911 for me?”
“Let’s have you stay here tonight and rest. I’ll call a doctor over shortly. Let me help you upstairs.”
“Thank you, Mrs. Martin.”
Hours seemed to stretch on. Feeling increasingly overheated, Jenny tried to pull at her clothes, but her weakened state made it impossible.
In her dazed state, she thought she must be ill, but reassured herself it would be fine. Molly would call a doctor, and she’d recover quickly with proper treatment.
Edwin and Molly were genuinely kind. They must be pleased with her. She believed that as long as she showed Joe her true self and gradually exposed Skylar’s nature, she could still end up marrying him. Jenny was sure of it.
Perhaps the illness was worse than she thought. Someone entered the room and helped her out of her clothes, relieving some of the heat.
Groggily, she opened her eyes and murmured a thank you, only to be silenced by a
kiss.
Looking up, she saw who was kissing her and murmured, “Joe… you came to help
me? I feel so awful.”
With “Joe” close by, her discomfort began to fade, and Jenny’s response grew more enthusiastic. That night was intense and wild.
On the other side of the wall, Molly lay in bed with a blank expression. Despite her earplugs, she could faintly hear the sounds from the next room.
“You’re just a little hussy. You just said you’ve never had a boyfriend, but who knows how many you’ve actually had.”
Edwin, now showing signs of age despite his efforts to stay youthful, had a particular
Chapter 769
fondness for younger women.
N
A sliver of light slipped through the partially closed curtain, landing on Jenny’s face. She frowned, feeling a bit uncomfortable, and turned over, trying to fall back asleep.
However, something blocked her movement. As she became more awake, she felt pain all over her body. Exhausted and groggy, she forced her eyes open.
For a moment, she wondered if she was dreaming. She closed her eyes again, convincing herself it was just a dream–there was no way Edwin could be in her bed. Slowly, she opened her eyes again and met Edwin’s gaze. He was already awake.

Chapter 770
Jenny couldn’t believe what had just happened. It felt like she had been struck by lightning.
Edwin sat up with a faint smile on his face.
“How could you be in my bed? I…” Jenny’s mind was racing, her face drained of color as she tried to piece together the events of the previous night.
It wasn’t a dream. It was real.
But the person in bed with her wasn’t Joe. It was Edwin.
Edwin’s smile remained gentle. “You climbed into my bed in the middle of the night. Don’t you remember? Don’t worry, I had a great time last night. I’ll make sure you get what’s coming to you.”
Jenny was utterly flustered, avoiding Edwin’s gaze as she noticed the marks on her body.
The pain coursing through her reminded her that this was no dream. But how could she have willingly climbed into Edwin’s bed? She had always liked Joe. Her first time was supposed to be for Joe.
How could it have been…
As Edwin got out of bed, his voice carried a satisfied note. “You were good for your first time. If there’s anything else you want, let me know. From now on, you can visit me whenever, and I’ll ensure you get what you’ve never had before.”
His words and tone reeked of satisfaction, but Jenny couldn’t bring herself to respond. As she left the Moran Residence, it felt like she was still trapped in a
nightmare.
She had only come for dinner. She had no idea how she ended up in Edwin’s bed.
She had a few drinks last night, but she wasn’t that easily drunk. She had handled alcohol before, back in college. She couldn’t fathom how this had happened.
She had saved her virginity for Joe, something she had always cherished. Now, was gone, just like that.
As Jenny stumbled into a cab, a car drove by. Inside was Paul, who had just opened the window for some fresh air.
To his surprise, he saw Jenny.
Chapter 770
“Hmm? What’s Jenny doing here?”
She looked like she had just left Moran Residence.
Paul squinted, noticing that Jenny seemed disoriented as if she had experienced some kind of shock.
Paul stroked his chin thoughtfully.
Meanwhile, back at Moran Residence, Edwin, who usually had little appetite in the morning, poured himself an extra glass of milk today.
Seeing the smug look on Edwin’s face, Molly felt a wave of discomfort but chose to ignore it.
“Transfer 500 thousand dollars to her later,” Edwin told Molly.
Molly was caught off guard, hesitating before she asked, “500 thousand dollars?”
She thought the amount was excessive. “500 thousand dollars for just one night? Is she really worth that much?”
Edwin replied, “Yes, it’s because it was her first time.”
In the past, when he was with Molly, he hadn’t cared whether it was her first time. His infatuation had overshadowed such concerns. But now, with age, it seemed he valued those things more.
Molly’s expression changed. She didn’t say much and simply agreed. “Alright, I’ll transfer the money to her.”
:
Paul hurried to find Joe after leaving the PR department.
Sarah had just called him over to review the news from the past couple of days. He needed to know if Joe wanted to intervene.
Others might not know, and the reporters might be clueless, but Paul and a few others were well aware of Joe’s marital status. When Joe was single, it wasn’t a big deal. But now that he was married, they needed to be careful about these gossip stories.
Paul knew a bit about Vera. He had thought the last candid shot of her was just a coincidence, but this time…
Chapter 771
1/2
Even if Vera insisted it was just a coincidence, Paul refused to believe it.
Gossip news often thrived on rumors and speculation, but this was different. Such rumors had not surfaced until Vera’s return. This was unprecedented.
“Mr. Martin, could you explain what’s happening? Are you planning to end your relationship with Mrs. Martin earlier than expected, and then give Ms. Ruell a formal position?” Paul asked.
Joe glanced at the headlines with a frosty expression. “Have Sarah handle it.”
“So… am I right?” Paul pressed, unwilling to let it go. He felt a pang of sympathy for Skylar, thinking she was being treated unfairly.
Recently, Skylar and Joe’s relationship had visibly improved, but Vera’s sudden appearance complicated matters.
Joe’s gaze turned icy. “Get out.”
Paul retreated, realizing he should not push further. Joe had always been private about his personal life.
…
Paul encountered Jenny again during the lunch break as he left the restaurant. Though he hadn’t been particularly curious about her before, seeing her leave Moran Residence in a daze earlier and now entering a pharmacy looking distraught piqued his interest.
His colleague noted it too. “Jenny seems off today. She used to be so lively, but now she’s quiet. She’s buying medicine; maybe she’s caught a cold.”
“A cold?” Paul mused. Could a cold really make someone seem so distressed?
He suspected Jenny’s departure from Moran Residence was more than a coincidence. Something was amiss.
Jenny’s recent behavior had become increasingly baffling. Considering the situation between Edwin and Joe, why would Jenny visit Moran Residence? He decided an investigation was necessary.
Meanwhile, after purchasing her medication Jenny entered a nearby restaurant. Once seated, she opened a bottle of water and took an emergency contraceptive pill.
She had hoped last night’s events were a nightmare, something she could dismiss
But reality proved otherwise.
Confusion clouded her thoughts as she pondered her next steps.
Just then, she received a text from the bank confirming a 500,000 dollar transfer. Shortly after, a WhatsApp message from Molly arrived. “Thank you for your efforts last night. Here is your payment. Feel free to visit us again.”
Had she received this message on another day, she would have been elated and responded immediately. But now… The message felt like a stab to her heart.
500,000 dollars…
They paid 500,000 dollars for what happened last night.
She questioned how this was possible and why it had occurred. She struggled to understand what was happening.
She questioned if Edwin’s claims were true. He said she had willingly joined him in bed, but her memories were tangled with moments of intimacy with Joe.
She couldn’t accept it. Edwin was Joe’s father–how could she ever face Joe after this?
Rowan and Minerva had just finished a passionate encounter. Their bodies were sticky with sweat.
Rowan, ever gentle afterward, suggested Minerva shower first.
As he sat on the edge of the bed, smoking a cigarette and scrolling through his phone, an old Messenger notification pinged. He recognized the profile picture immediately. Driven by impulse, he clicked it
“Rowan, what should I do? I wish everything I’m going through was just a nightmare. I know you probably won’t respond, and I know you haven’t used Messenger in ages. But please let me believe there’s still hope.”
Chapter 772
Jenny continued, “If only someone could be here with me right now and tell me that the past two days were just a nightmare, maybe I wouldn’t feel so helpless.
“Is everyone around me destined to leave eventually? If I’d known it would end like this, I should have gone back to the countryside and led a simple life. At least there, people wouldn’t have rejected me because of my background.”
Her words conveyed a deen sense of despair. Rowan was left wondering what had transpired in her fe over the past couple of days. He was lost in thought, contemplating her distress.
After finishing her shower, Minerva emerged and saw Rowan engrossed in his phone. “I’m heading out. See you at the courthouse tomorrow.”
She wasn’t sure if Rowan even heard her, as he didn’t look up from his screen. His attention was entirely focused on his phone.
Minerva wasn’t concerned; their relationship was strictly transactional–a family alliance. After having a child, Rowan was free to live as he pleased.
However, she had her own struggles. She was battling fertility issues.
Moments later, Rowan heard the door close and snapped out of his daze, realizing Minerva had left. He glanced toward the door, then back at his phone. After a brief pause, he dialed a number from his contacts.
The call was answered almost immediately.
“Rowan? You finally called me back. I feel like everyone is abandoning me, and I don’t know what to do.” Jenny was surprised that Rowan called her.
It seemed Rowan had seen her message on Messenger. She had taken a gamble, never expecting him to actually notice it.
“What happened?” Rowan’s voice sounded indifferent.
Jenny’s unease grew. “I… I had a nightmare. In the dream, I was being
bullied and couldn’t fight back. Everyone was blaming me, saying it was all my fault. I tried to explain, but no one believed me. Not even you, Rowan. It felt so real… I was terrified.”
She couldn’t bring herself to tell him about last night’s events. No matter how many times she tried to cleanse herself, she felt tainted.
“It was just a nightmare?” Rowan’s tone grew colder.
“Yes, Rowan, it was terrifying. I was really scared.” Jenny’s sobs were audible over the phone.
Rowan’s lips pressed into a thin line. “Stop being so dramatic, Jenny. If you keep this up, your nightmare might become reality.”
He had been deceived once again. With that, he ended the call.
Jenny was left in stunned silence. The tone of the disconnect signal echoed in her ear. She couldn’t believe Rowan had hung up on her, the cruelty of his actions cutting deep. It felt as if he had no understanding of the torment she was enduring, both physical and emotional.
All she wanted was to be with the person she loved, yet even that seemed like a transgression. The universe felt relentless in its punishment, pushing her into despair.
Rowan, ignorant of her suffering, had only compounded her pain. Jenny wondered if he felt satisfied now.
And Skylar–if she knew, she’d probably be thrilled, no longer fearing Joe
would be taken from her.
Jenny would bear all this pain alone.
As Skylar was about to leave work, she received an unexpected call from Jenny.
“Hello?”

“Not yet, Skylar,” Jenny said, her voice laced with defiance. “Do you think I’m so easily pushed around? Are you happy now that Joe is distancing himself from me?”
“I’ll tell you something,” Jenny spat out angrily. “You won’t be laughing in the end. You two are bound to get divorced sooner or later!”
If she couldn’t have Joe, then neither could Skylar.
Skylar’s response was icy. “Whether I laugh in the end remains to be seen. But Jenny, you won’t even get that chance. Being delusional is a sickness. You should get that checked. And by the way, I don’t like you either.”
With that, Skylar ended the call and slipped her phone back into her bag.
Skylar understood that Jenny was young and prone to impulsive behavior, but the constant drama was beginning to wear on her patience. She probably ran into some trouble with Joe earlier today, and now she was taking it out on her.
Skylar thought Jenny was pathetic. She made her way downstairs a few minutes later to clock out. Just then, her phone rang again. It wasn’t Jenny; it was Natalie.
“Skye, guess where I am?” Natalie’s voice bubbled with excitement.
Skylar smiled and asked, “Where?”
“I’m at Yancey Residence. I came by to see Ms. Yancey and brought a ton of groceries. When you get home, you’ll have a hot meal waiting for you. Hurry back!”
Skylar stopped in her tracks. “You’re really at my place?”
“When have I ever lied to you? Hurry back! No more talking, I’m heading to the kitchen to get started.”
Skylar was surprised by Natalie’s sudden visit. They had only exchanged a few texts earlier, and Natalie had mentioned she planned to visit Janine
soon, but Skylar hadn’t expected her to show up so quickly.
When Skylar arrived home and opened the door, she was greeted by the mouthwatering aroma of food. Despite Natalie’s youthful exuberance and tendency to view things in black and white, she was an excellent cook.
Janine commented, “Nath’s cooking is incredible. I offered to help, but she insisted on doing everything herself. If she weren’t already married, I’d love to have her as a daughter–in–law.”
Janine’s admiration for Natalie was clear, though Skylar had not
mentioned Natalie’s divorce to her. Now was not the time to bring it up.
Skylar smiled and replied, “My brothers have always been focused on their careers.”
Janine had been troubled by the recent issues between Steven and Annie.
“Well, a strong focus on one’s career isn’t a bad thing,” Janine mused thoughtfully. She reflected on Steven’s tumultuous relationships in the past, believing that love couldn’t be rushed. When the time was right, everything would fall into place.
Skylar entered the kitchen, where Natalie was still cooking. Hearing Skylar’s footsteps, Natalie glanced up from the stove. “You’re back already? Was there no traffic?”
“The roads were clear, so I got lucky. Is there more cooking to be done?” Skylar asked.
Natalie replied, “Just the last dish. You can wait in the living room.”
“Okay,” Skylar responded.
An hour later, after dinner, Skylar and Natalie took a leisurely walk around the complex. The area was small and cozy, filled with elderly residents. They strolled slowly, enjoying the peaceful evening.
“If something’s bothering you, you should talk to me about it,” Natalie said, her concern evident. She had recently learned unsettling news–Joe and Vera were high school classmates, and Vera had been Joe’s past love.
The series of paparazzi shots seemed orchestrated by Joe himself.
Natalie thought it must be true. After all, there had been no recent news about Skylar and Joe, despite their marriage.
Chapter 774
Skylar was feeling particularly low at the moment. She had been carrying a heavy burden, a result of unresolved issues with Joe that were difficult to put into words.
“I’m fine. Don’t worry about me,” she assured Natalie.
Natalie raised an eyebrow but didn’t press further. She was worried about Skylar, who had already been hurt by Christopher and now seemed to be struggling with Joe. She hoped Skylar wouldn’t bottle up her emotions.
After their meal today, she was comforted by Skylar’s upbeat demeanor. They lingered in conversation as dusk settled in.
Noticing the time, Natalie said, “I should head out now. Make sure you and Ms. Yancey get some rest.”
“I’ll drive you,” Skylar offered, grabbing the car keys.
Natalie had come directly from the film set and had not driven that day.
As Natalie began to decline the offer, her phone rang. It was Hank.
“Oh? Okay, I’m not too far away. I’ll head over now.”
After ending the call, Natalie informed Skylar, “Looks like you’ll need to give me a ride after all. Mr. Powell and the crew drank too much at the restaurant. Hank has a pressing matter and can’t pick up Mr. Powell, so I’ll have to go get him.*
“Alright, let’s go. I’ll take you,” Skylar said. Then, they headed toward her
car.
“Will Ms. Yancey be okay alone at home?”
“It’s fine. I’ll give my mom a call and let her know.”
Soon, they arrived at a Floan restaurant.
Skylar followed Natalie into the restaurant.
Upon reaching the private room, they saw three or four drunk people. The room was large, and it appeared the others had already left. The
remaining few were waiting for a ride.
In Jispsburg City, drunk driving was heavily enforced. Celebrities, in particular, were cautious about not driving after drinking.
Skylar waited outside the private room.
After greeting the others, Natalie approached Austin. “Mr. Powell, I’m here to take you home.”
Though Austin had drunk quite a bit, he was resting on a nearby couch, eyes closed. He looked as if he was asleep but opened his eyes when he heard Natalie’s voice.
Seeing Natalie, his gaze softened slightly.
“Alright, let’s go,” he said, standing up. He seemed fine initially, but as soon as he took a step, Natalie noticed something was off and quickly helped
him.
“The car is right outside. I checked earlier, and there are no reporters waiting.”
Austin gave a gentle nod and hummed softly in response. He allowed Natalie to hold him.
When they reached the door and saw Skylar, Austin recognized her.” Nath’s friend?”
Skylar smiled and nodded.
The three of them left the private room and took the elevator down.
When the elevator doors opened on the ground floor, they were ready to step out. Skylar, behind Natalie and Austin, was confused when they both suddenly paused.
“What’s going on?” she asked, peeking outside the elevator. Her gaze froze slightly at the sight.
It was a coincidence. Joe and Jeremy, along with a few others, were
standing right there.
Joe didn’t notice her at first, his attention focused on Natalie and Austin. But when he noticed someone else behind them, his eyes quickly swept
over.
Skylar felt a shift in Joe’s expression when he finally saw her. She looked away from him.
Skylar then glanced at Jeremy. Jeremy’s gaze was cold, fixed on Natalie as she linked arms with Austin. Even without speaking, his eyes conveyed a chilling anger.
Skylar silently thought that if they had arrived just a few minutes earlier, they would have avoided this encounter.
Chapter 775
The atmosphere was as tense as a battlefield.
Natalie hadn’t anticipated running into Jeremy. Since their divorce, they had hardly interacted. The last time they crossed paths, she could feel the widening gap between them. But now, seeing Jeremy again, it was as if she had done something wrong.
It felt like they were still married.
It took her a moment to remember that they were already divorced. Following Jeremy’s gaze, she glanced over.
To an outsider, it might have seemed like she had an intimate relationship with Austin. In truth, she was merely helping Austin steady himself. But there was no point in explaining–it would only make things more awkward.
She forced a small, polite smile and greeted them, “What a coincidence. Are you here for dinner too?”
Jeremy’s lips twitched slightly. His eyes were locked on Natalie, but he said nothing.
Then, his gaze shifted to Austin. Despite being slightly tipsy, Austin met Jeremy’s stare with a calm demeanor.
The silent exchange of glances between them was so intense that even Skylar, standing behind them, felt something was off.
Just then, another person arrived as the elevator doors began to close again.
Skylar broke the tension, “The elevator doors are closing.”
Natalie’s face was slightly pale as she addressed Austin, “Mr. Powell, let’s head out.”
Austin responded gently, “Alright, let’s go.”
As they stepped out of the elevator, Austin gave Jeremy a nod as a polite

Skylar didn’t have time to dwelt on what Joe’s look might have meant.

Skylar drove Natalie and Austin
The car’s atmosphere was oddly silent. No one spoke. Skylar focused the road, not thinking much of it.
Through the rearview mirror, she noticed Austin watching Natalie. appeared lost in thought.
The car’s interior was dim, lit only by passing streetlights.
It was difficult to gauge Austin’s thoughts as he stared at Natalie
Skylar sensed something unusual. Austin’s gaze at Natalie didn’t resemble that of a boss toward an employee. It seemed more like a man watching woman he cared about, with a hint of possessiveness.
The realization startled Skylar.
When the light turned red, she glanced at Natalie again. Natalie was still somewhat distant. Earlier, Jeremy’s silence at the restaurant had been unsettling.
When the light turned green, Skylar checked on Austin again. He had closed his eyes, resting.
Skylar wondered if she was overthinking things.
Soon, they arrived at Austin’s home. It was a villa neighborhood.
Natalie finally snapped out of her daze. ‘Skye, I’ll take Mr. Powell inside
first. Wait for me ten minutes.”
*Sure,”
Natalie helped Austin out of the car.
Skylar remained in the car, watching Natalie and Austin. From behind, Austin didn’t appear drunk. He walked steadily. Yet, he still relied on Natalie to support him.
After they entered the villa, Na alie returned a few minutes later, quickly running back to the car.

Skylar started the car and drove off
Natalie’s chatter started up once more once they reached the highway She said, “Mr. Powell won’t be busy in the upcoming days. rl be able to take a break. You can contact me if Janine needs anything. After all, you might be busy.”
Skylar thanked her with a smile. She sent Natalie to her destination soon after.
None of them mentioned seeing Joe and Jeremy at the restaurant.
Natalie didn’t go home right after getting out of Skylar’s car. Instead, she bought two yogurt drinks at the convenience store outside her
neighborhood. After sipping them, she walked home.
A gentle breeze caressed her. Natalie’s grim mood improved greatly.
Not before long, she arrived home.
Just as she opened the door, someone grabbed her arm. Then, Natalie was pressed onto the icy wall. The cold seeped into her bones. She was about to scream. However, when she saw that Jeremy was her aggressor, she stopped herself from doing so.
“Jeremy, you…”
Jeremy had drunk some wine. Natalie could smell the alcohol lingering on him. He glared at her dangerously.
Natalie had never seen him like that. She began to panic.
“You divorced me not long ago. Have you gotten together with Austin already?”
“What?”
How could she get together with Austin? She was nothing more than his employee.
Jeremy pinched Natalie’s chin and continued questioning her, “Have you slept with him?”
They had known each other for years. Jeremy understood her like the
back of his hand.
Natalie never used perfume. However, a light scent wafted off her. It was the smell of men’s cologne.
She widened her eyes and screamed, “That’s bullshit!”
Natalie tried pushing him away. Unfortunately, she failed. He was too heavy.
In the past, she would’ve been thrilled to have him close to her. Now, whenever he approached her, the only thing on her mind was how to
escape.
“Prove to me you didn’t sleep with him.”
Jeremy’s muscles tensed as he suddenly picked Natalie up and brought her into her apartment.
He slammed the door behind them.
This terrified Natalie. She shrieked, “Jeremy, you’re drunk! Let me go! Don’t you remember that we’ve gotten divorced? We’re not married anymore. You can’t barge into my house like that!”
She had never seen Jeremy behaving in this way,
“Jeremy!”
He knew every corner of her apartment well. Jeremy headed straight toward her bedroom with Natalie in his arms.
“I’ve already told you to prove you haven’t slept with Austin! Natalie, do not test my patience. You’re my woman. No other man is allowed to sleep with
you. Don’t you understand”
19% words were underlaid with fury.
Not only was he jealous, but he was also extremely possessive
Natalie thought her ears had deceived her. She raged, “Jeremy, do you know what you’re talking about? We’re divorced. There are no ties between us. Austin and I have a strictly work–related relationship. However, even if we were involved with each other, you’d have no right to interfere. You have no right to barge into my
ise and demand I prove it to you!”
Jeremy yanked his tie off. Then, he took his shirt off and hovered over Natalie.
She failed to escape and was confined to the bed by a furious Jeremy. He tore at her clothes.

Chapter 777
“Jeremy! You’re drunk. Sober up. Do you know what you’re doing right now?
27
Natalie shrieked. She sobbed fearfully.
However, her cries were futile in calming Jeremy down. Her strength was nothing in the face of Jeremy’s muscles. She couldn’t stop him from taking her skirt off. He even undid her bra skillfully.
Suddenly, a loud slap rang out. Natalie trembled as her palm tingled.
Jeremy’s movements halted. A familiar glint of lust could be seen in his eyes..
Her terror reached new heights. The loathing she’d done her best to suppress made a comeback.
“Jeremy, you’ve drunk too much!” Then, Natalie bit her lip. Tears glimmered in her eyes.
Jeremy wasn’t drunk. That bit of alcohol wasn’t enough to get him wasted.
He’d known that she wasn’t a willing participant from the start. Yet, he couldn’t watch Natalie get together with someone else.
“You’re my one and only wife,” Jeremy emphasized solemnly.
Natalie was horrified. She said, “We’re divorced. You’ll marry someone else in the future, but it won’t be me. Jeremy, you’re not drunk, are you?”
“Divorce?” Jeremy echoed coldly. He laughed self–deprecatingly.
“Are you sure you didn’t sleep with Austin?” Jeremy asked once more.
Natalie inhaled deeply. She said, “I’m only an employee in Mr. Powell’s studio. I work hard at my assigned tasks. I don’t involve myself in the dirty work you’re envisioning. Mr. Powell wouldn’t develop feelings for his employees.”
She was extremely self–aware. There were countless beauties in the entertainment industry. Why would Austin disregard those gorgeous
were and develop a crush on her instead?
‘That’s not the point. My affairs have ripthing to do with you anymore. Jeremy, we can only treat each other as siblings at most, or perhaps even friends,” continued Natale.
Jeremy regained his rationality. He got off her bed and stood by it. He furrowed his brows as he stared at the clothes strewn on the floor.
“Remember what I’m telling you now. You cannot date anyone else without my permission. You will remarry me one day.”
Natalie shrieked incredulously, “I won’t remarry you! Don’t you understand? We’re done! Nothing will happen between us ever again! We’ve got documents detailing our divo locked up at home. This is evidence enough to prove that we’ve severed ties. On the day we got divorced, knew that we would never get back together.”
Natalie hadn’t thought that Jeremy would still harbor hopes of getting remarried. He treated her as one of his possessions.
Jeremy stared at her with pursed lips. In the end, he put his clothes on and left.
A chill ran up her spine as Natalie listened to the door slam. She numbly- looked down at her bra, which was hanging precariously on her shoulders. Then, Natalie refastened it stiffly.
Jeremy’s strange behavior was jarring. It was as though she had never
really known Jeremy.
Suddenly, she chuckled lightly and said, “I’ll never fall for anyone else ever again. I’ve never thought of getting remarried either.”
Thankfully, Jeremy hadn’t thrown a tantrum before Austin. She would’ve lost her job if he had. Natalie would also be too embarrassed to continue working under him.
A few days later, Janine had made a full recovery. Charles had taken a few days off work to take care of her. Skylar returned to Galaxy Villa.
She hadn’t contacted Joe in the past few days and had no idea whether he’d come home.
After running into him at the restaurant, Skylar had made up her mind. She would have an open and honest conversation with him.
Chapter 778
Skylar prepared a few dishes. Then, she sat down and waited.
If he had been free, Joe would have come home around this hour.
Occasionally, he would be 20 minutes late.
20 minutes passed with no sign of Joe. It looked like he hadn’t returned home for the past few days.
Skylar ate dinner. Then, she did some cleaning till 7:00 pm.
Suddenly, the doorbell rang.
People seldom came to Galaxy Villa. The helpers from Pearlhall Residence would’ve come in directly. They didn’t need to ring the doorbell.
She walked to the door and watched the figure on the screen. It was Vera. Skylar was rather surprised. It would be disrespectful to pretend that no one was at home. After all, all the lights were on.
In the end, Skylar opened the door.
Vera wasn’t stunned to see Skylar.
Considering that Joe let Skylar drive the car Vera had gifted him, he was definitely generous with Skylar. Vera had sent someone to investigate. Skylar stayed at Galaxy Villa most of the time.
However, Skylar hadn’t been staying there for the past few days.
“I’m here to talk to you,” said Vera.
If she wanted to talk to Joe, she wouldn’t have sought him out at Galaxy Villa. It was too risky and wasn’t her style at all.
Skylar nodded and invited, “Do come in.”
After Vera sat down, she scanned her surroundings. She’d heard that Joe stayed here most of the time, but she’d never visited him before.
The mansion felt warm and inviting. Perhaps it was because of
presence
Vera glanced at Skylar’s home attire. It looked like she treated Galaxy Villa as home. Discomfort rose within Vera
Skylar asked, “So tell me, why did you want to meet me?”
She didn’t hate arrogant people. However, the way Vera put herself on a pedestal and looked down on others instilled discomfort in Skylar.
“You’ve been flitting between different men trying to please all of them at the same time. Isn’t it tiring?”
All the articles about Vera and Joe had been erased. Vera suspected Joe didn’t want the rumors about their relationship to spread.
What did this mean? Vera wasn’t willing to dwell on it. However, she could have a chat with Skylar.
Vera believed that Skylar was driven solely by personal profit. Money was the only thing that mattered to her. She could sell herself if that was what it took. Thus, if Skylar could be paid off, she wouldn’t be an issue at all.
Skylar’s expression turned cold. She scolded, “What’s wrong with you?”
When had Vera seen her flirting with different men?
Vera frowned and continued arrogantly, “There’s no need to put up and act in front of me. You’re with a different man every time I see you. I don’t know how you organize so many relationships. I have no idea why Joe is so forgiving toward your lovers either. However, it doesn’t matter. Name your price.”
Money was what they cared about most. If money could resolve the problem, it wasn’t a problem at all.
Skylar couldn’t help but giggle. She mocked, “You think I’ve got complicated relationships with men just because I dined with them or showed up to events with them? Did one of your middle school teachers teach you how to reason, or did you learn this overseas?”
Chapter 779
There had to be something wrong with Vera’s brain. If Vera hadn’t been Joe’s first love, Skylar would’ve driven her out of the house with a broom.
Vera stood up abruptly and declared, “There’s no need to deny it after you’ve already done it. Besides, there’s no one else here!”
Skylar was the kind of person who pretended to be a virtuous wife even after whoring around.
She didn’t behave so innocently before Joe, did she? She was embroiled in complicated relationships with multiple men. Yet, she could still act naïve and innocent.
The entertainment industry lost a star when Skylar didn’t pick up a career in acting. She was an excellent performer.
“It’s getting late. I would like to go to bed. It’s time for you to leave,” Skylar stated. She did not have the patience to explain herself and chased Vera out.
“Wait. You haven’t named your price. I can give you a sum of money. You’ll no longer need to eat out of a man’s palm.
“I know you’re working in Mr. Gardner Senior’s team. Do you know that you’ve destroyed his reputation as an honorable man? He’s getting old. Aren’t you afraid that things will get out of hand? If anything happens to him, you won’t be able to bear the consequences!”
Vera’s expression was one of utter displeasure. She couldn’t comprehend why Skylar wasn’t feeling inferior before her. Skylar came from a lower–class background. Instead, she didn’t even see Vera as a threat.
Who gave her the confidence to behave like that? Was it Joe? Or was it Alexander? Perhaps it was Rowan and Aiken.
Vera had heard rumors regarding how Skylar had visited Alexander’s mansion. He even allowed her unrestricted access to his home. Skylar didn’t harbor much of a standard for men. She dabbled with men of all ages!
Vera couldn’t comprehend how Skylar could fool such an intelligent man. Had she tamed her with her skills in bed?
Skylar slapped her. “You can humiliate me all you want, but I will not let you humiliate a respected elder of mine! Vera Ruell, if you don’t like me, talk to Joe about it straight out. Have him come to me. You don’t have the right to throw a tantrum at me. Get lost.”
Vera was stunned. She cupped her face and stared at Skylar incredulously. She then raised her hand, about to retaliate. However, Skylar grabbed her hand.
“You deserved to be slapped,” Skylar stated firmly. She stared at her coldly.
Respect was a two–way street. Evidently, Vera didn’t deserve her respect.
“Let go of me. Skylar, have you thought of the consequences of pissing me off? You should know my relationship with Joe!” Vera tried to yank her wrist out of Skylar’s grip. However, she failed.
Vera’s expression changed. She wasn’t expecting Skylar to be capable of such strength.
Skylar’s stony expression softened. She did know of their relationship. The color drained from her face.
Skylar let go.
Chapter 770
In the face of Skylar’s silence, Vera thought she’d calmed down, and fear had overcome her after the fact. She chuckled coldly and said, “I believe you’ve realized the difference between the two of us at the auction. You needed Mr. Gardner Senior to procure the item you wanted. However, I can purchase what I want on my own. I could even grab your favorite antiques from under your nose.
“Didn’t you adore those antiques? Yet, you couldn’t get them. Think about what this means for you. When you get to the bottom of things, you can seek me out at Ruell Residence! However, I will make you pay for the slap.”
Skylar’s expression twisted slightly upon hearing that. She seemed rather confused.
“Who told you I wanted the antiques you purchased?”
Vera smirked icily. She was such an avid actress, and her mask was always on. “Stop faking it. I can see right through you.”
She knew that continuing to speak tonight wouldn’t yield any results. In addition, Vera’s thoughts were in a mess. There was no need to stay. She walked toward the door.
The corner of Skylar’s lips twitched. She wanted to know why Vera thought she desired those antiques. Skylar said coldly, “I hope you won’t be begging me for mercy in the future.”
Chapter 780
“Beg you for mercy?” It was as though Vera had heard a hilarious joke. She was the heiress of the Ruell fortune. She was born differently.
In comparison with Skylar, she stood at the top of the pyramid. Skylar could only look up at her in yearning.
When she considered it from that perspective, Vera felt like she was demoting herself by being here. She even got slapped. She would make Skylar pay for her slap. Skylar would regret how cocky and ignorant she’d been.
“You’ll be the one begging me for help,” spat Vera before leaving.
Before Vera got into her car, she looked at Galaxy Villa one last time. She knew an ignorant woman like Skylar would only be a temporary plaything for Joe.
After getting harassed by Vera, Skylar’s mood soured.
It was dark outside. Joe wouldn’t be coming home.
She decided to take a shower. Then, she retired for the night and began reading.
Getting sad over a man and his first love wouldn’t be worth it.
Joe was on the way back to Avalon Residence. He and Lucas were the only ones in the car.
Gloria called. She asked, “When are you getting home?”
Joe looked out the window and replied, “I’ll be arriving soon.”
“Alright. I don’t think they mean well calling you back there. Garth is healthier than a 40–year–old. Why would he fall sick all of a sudden? Why would he stay home instead of going to the hospital? They’re just looking for an excuse to make you go back. Be careful,” Gloria reminded. She was extremely concerned. Ever since her husband died, the Martins plotted against Joe.
Joe said, “Don’t worry, Grandma.”
He wasn’t a naïve kid with unrealistic expectations of his family anymore. Their schemes would be rendered useless to him.
Gloria responded, “You little punk. This call of mine was unnecessary. There are not many people who can trap you now. Right, the helpers who’ve been cleaning Galaxy Villa told me that you and Skylar haven’t come home for the past few days. What’s going on?”
Joe understood. This question was the main purpose of Gloria’s call.
He looked back down and said, “Janine accidentally broke her leg. Skylar has been taking care of her at home. Sometimes, I visit her and stay a few nights.”
He didn’t give full disclosure. Joe had been staying somewhere else.
“That explains things. I haven’t seen Janine before. I’ll ask her to meet after she recovers. The two of you got married just like that. It’s a little unacceptable for the two of you to have done so without a wedding. I’ll talk to her. Then, we’ll plan your wedding,” Gloria said.
“As to the wedding… we’re not in a hurry. We’ll talk about it in the future,” Joe said lowly.
Chapter 780
Gloria raised her voice and said, “What do you mean you’re not in a hurry? Of course you aren’t in a hurry. You’re a man. How about Skylar? What woman wouldn’t like to have a wedding? Only at a wedding will the people in Jipsburg get to know her, and be aware that she’s your wife. Alright. I’ll arrange for this.”
Joe’s eyes darkened. He believed that Skylar had fallen for Aiken. He was a charismatic man. There were rumors that Aiken had a new hobby of collecting antiques. He’d even bought a series of books about it.
Joe pursed his lips. How invested.
Gloria huffed.
Upon hearing this, Edgar knew that she’d gotten angry.
Chapter 781
Chapter 781
“Perhaps Mr. Martin would like to give Mrs. Martin a surprise. After all, these youngsters might prefer a different type of wedding.”
Gloria thought Edgar’s words made sense. She said, “That might be possible. However, I feel like they’ve encountered some problems in their relationship. In addition, Vera has returned. I can’t help but worry
about them.”
“Don’t worry, Mrs. Martin Senior. I don’t think anything will happen to them. Look, Mr. Martin is helping Mrs. Martin take care of her mother. He wouldn’t have done so in the past. He looks unfeeling but is a softie on the inside. He adores Mrs. Martin. Yet, he doesn’t voice his feelings,” Edgar said. It was as though he’d seen through them.
Gloria nodded and said, “I’ll believe that. Skylar is a one–in–a–million girl. I’m afraid Joe will regret letting Skye go. When he regrets his decision and tries to beg for her to come home to him, she wouldn’t even spare him a look.”
So that was what she was concerned about.
Edgar couldn’t help but chuckle. He said, “Don’t worry. Mr. Martin knows what he’s doing.”
He was confused. If Joe cared deeply about Vera, why didn’t he go overseas to look for her and bring her home to marry her?
The crux of the situation was that Vera wasn’t important to Joe.
However, some things had to be experienced firsthand by those youngsters. Their advice wouldn’t be of much help.
The second Joe crossed the threshold of Avalon Residence, the group of chatting men turned to him immediately. Among them was Garth, who had claimed to be gravely sick. Denton was present as well along with other members of the Martin family.
With so many people there, the atmosphere brimmed with liveliness.
Garth, who was allegedly down with a mysterious disease, waved at Joe and said, “Finally, Joe has arrived. Come over. Mr. Ruell Senior has just got here as well.”
Denton’s eyes lit up upon seeing Joe. He said, “I haven’t seen you for the past few years. At long last we can meet. You’re able to hold your own now.”
A few years ago, he’d thought that Joe wouldn’t be able to lead the Martin family.
Yet, he had solidified the status and position of the Martin family in Jipsburg within a few years. They were doing better than ever.
Coincidentally, Vera had thought things through and decided to return. It was time to confirm their
engagement.
An icy glare flickered across Joe’s eyes as he scanned the men present. He greeted, “Uncle Garth, Mr. Ruell Senior.”
Skylar was startled awake from a nightmare. She thought someone was beside her, but when she glanced over, nothing was there.
Chapter 781
2/2
All the lights were off. The room was cloaked in darkness.
She turned the lamp on and got out of bed. Skylar retrieved a towel and wiped at the sweat on her forehead.
Every detail of the dream seemed so real. Skylar hadn’t dreamt like that in a long time.
In her dream, Joe was under the influence of a negative item. He didn’t recognize Gloria or Skylar. After divorcing her, Joe married Vera. He even allowed Vera to hire a group of men to kidnap her and auction her off on the black market. Perhaps he believed their marriage was a blemish in his otherwise flawless reputation.
Skylar’s dream ended with her being auctioned off for a million dollars. Her future was damningly bleak.
Skylar knew it was a nightmare. She was aware that she’d been dealing with many negative items recently. It was taking a toll on her. Although it wouldn’t be able to harm her, it did give her a scare in her dreams.
Only… It seemed so real, as though it was playing out in real life.
After dabbing at her sweat, any traces of drowsiness had left her. She felt rather thirsty. Skylar went downstairs to get some water.
Suddenly, she heard noises from the door, illuminated by the moonlight.
Skylar questioned alertly, “Who’s there?”
Chapter 782
The person by the door froze. He wasn’t expecting anyone to be at home.
Skylar took a step backward. She wanted to go back into the kitchen to grab a knife.
The news had reported plenty of cases of homicide and robbery recently. Had Galaxy Villa become a target?
The police were in the midst of their investigation. Was this murderer downright fearless?
Skylar could hear her heart pounding. She wasn’t scared to get in a fight. However, she was terrified of murderers.
“It’s me.”
It was Joe’s voice. Skylar froze. Joe?
That explained why the long limbs she’d caught a glimpse of in the moonlight looked familiar. She found
it understandable why the murderer hadn’t been apprehended. His legs were too long. He must’ve been a formidable sprinter.
“It’s you,” Skylar sighed.
Joe was walking toward her already.
She planned to go back upstairs directly after drinking some water, so Skylar didn’t turn the lights on. When Joe walked over, she saw only his silhouette–she couldn’t see his expression.
“Who else would it be?” asked Joe.
He’d gone to Janine’s house. Charles let him in. Only then did Joe know that Skylar wasn’t there.
When he was about to head home, Garth asked him to go to Avalon House.
Then, he drove home in the middle of the night.
Joe had thought she’d be asleep. However, she had come downstairs to drink water.
Skylar answered honestly, “I thought you were the murderer wanted by the police.”
“A murderer?” Joe laughed. He didn’t look like a murderer, did he?
“Yeah, the news reported a robbery and homicide. It also happened in a mansion. The mother and her three children all died. Her husband narrowly escaped. He’d been on a business trip. The murderer is still
on the run.”
“Galaxy Villa is equipped with an advanced security system. If someone wanted to rob you, they’d have to be invulnerable. Don’t you worry.”
Skylar nodded and asked, “Would you like some water?”
She hadn’t checked the time after waking up. Skylar had no idea what time it was.
Joe hummed in response, so Skylar poured him a glass and handed it to him.
They saw no issue in conversing with, the lights off.
Joe downed his glass of water and said, “Let’s go upstairs and back to sleep.”
“Alright.”
Once they went upstairs, Skylar lay in bed. She checked the time and was surprised that it was already 4:
Chapt4: 782
00 am. It explained why it wasn’t completely dark outside. Dawn would be breaking in a while.
Joe showered quickly and got into bed. He gathered Skylar into his arms and said, “Go to bed.”
Skylar stiffened. Joe was behaving a lot like the night before they discussed their divorce.
Drowsiness crept up on Skylar gradually. When she woke up, it was 7:00 am. Joe still had his arms around her. She gently shifted his arm off and snuck out of bed:
Just as Skylar left the bedroom, Joe opened his eyes.
Downstairs, Skylar prepared a simple breakfast. She made two sandwiches and poured some milk.
Initially, she planned to eat some breakfast, get ready for the day, and head to work. But Joe had come home late last night, so he probably wouldn’t be getting up early
Chapter 783
Just as Skylar was about to sit down and eat breakfast, Joe came downstairs. He had gotten changed.
“I’ve made some sandwiches,” Skylar said.
Joe nodded and replied, “Mhmm. I’m hungry.”
They were silent as they ate. When they finished, they tidied up separately.
The atmosphere between them seemed peaceful. However, there was something off about it. Skylar
didn’t like to skirt around her issues. She asked Joe, “Will you be coming home for dinner?”
Joe looked at her. He paused briefly before answering, “Yeah, I’ll be coming home.”
“Alright. See you at night.”
They would talk it out at dinner.
Vera. immediately rushed over to Denton’s house after his call. He’d come back in the morning.
Vera knew he’d been to Avalon Residence, and she was also aware that Joe had gone. That was why she went to meet Skylar.
She had not gotten much sleep the previous night; her face throbbed from Skylar’s slap. Even after putting on medication, it still stung painfully. Vera was aware that it was only in her head.
It was the first time Vera had ever gotten slapped.
“Grandpa.”
Vera set aside her emotions and regained her composure upon seeing Denton.
However, he didn’t greet her with a smile like he used to. Instead, his expression was rather cold.
“Vera, what’s going on between you and Joe? He spared me no deference last night. I’m his elder, not to mention a powerful man Jipsburg. Yet, he turned me down just like that.”
Denton pounded on the table. The helpers jumped. Vera was stunned as well. She seldom saw him like this.
Vera bit her lip briefly before steeling herself to ask, “Grandpa, what happened last night?”
Hadn’t the Martins called Denton over to confirm the status of her relationship with Joe?
Both families harbored similar thoughts, and the discussion should’ve gone smoothly. However, Denton mentioned Joe’s lack of deference. What happened last night?
Denton said grimly, “Joe said that Mrs. Martin Senior had decided on his marriage for him. There was no need for Garth or anyone else to interfere. By saying anyone else, he was referring to me, wasn’t he?”
“I don’t think that’s what he meant. Joe has carried the Martin family on his shoulders. He has the capability and the right to ensure his elders don’t stick their noses into his business,” Vera attempted to explain.
A few years ago, she left Jipsburg because she believed Joe couldn’t stand up against the Martins. After all, it was him against the world. Other members of the Martin family would rob him of his power.
Vera underestimated Joe. Not only had he protected what belonged to him, but he had also spread his wings of influence in Jipsburg.
Chapter 783
Years later, even a glance at Vera made her pulse quicken.
After Denton heard her explanation, his expression calmed. He asked, “Did you meet the woman he’s with?”
“I had a chat with her. I hoped that she would leave Joe on her own. She refused to do so. If I’d known that she would be such a hassle, I would’ve come home months ago. It would’ve saved me a lot of trouble.” Vera regretted it slightly.
She’d wanted to come home a few months ago. However, something happened before she could do so. Vera could only stay there for a few more months. Yet, these months gave Skylar an opportunity to slip in. Denton said with a frown, “You shouldn’t be too concerned about it. A woman from a background like this doesn’t pose much of a threat to you. Joe’s just playing. There’s no need to lower yourself to her level. Make sure you continue getting along with Joe. Ensure he proposes to you in a while.”
Vera nodded confidently and said, “I’m confident I’ll be able to make him propose to me willingly.”
Denton lifted his chin with satisfaction. Just as he was about to get up, a wave of dizziness seized him. He fell back down.
“Grandpa!”
Chapter 784
“Grandpa!”
Vera called for him twice in a row in her panic.
A bunch of helpers crowded over and helped to examine him.
Denton hadn’t lost consciousness. However, his face was ashen, and he felt frail. He said, “I’m fine…”
He couldn’t see himself, but Vera and the helpers could see him just fine. They had never seen him so pale.
Although he was getting old, he was very healthy. Denton was examined frequently at the hospital, and his personal doctor showed up every week. Considering this, Denton probably didn’t have any health problems.
“Grandpa, why don’t we get you checked at the hospital?” Vera felt like something was wrong.
Denton shook his head. He said firmly, “The doctor came yesterday. I’m fine. Why would I go to the hospital? I probably didn’t get enough sunshine today. Besides, I’ve been stewing with anger for the whole night. For my age, anger is the worst curse. It’s nothing much. You can leave first. I’ll admire those paintings. It’ll improve my mood.”
For some reason, he felt uncomfortable whenever he wasn’t looking at those paintings, as though something was missing. Looking at his paintings was as important an affair as eating and breathing.
“Are you sure you’re alright?” Vera was still concerned.
Denton waved a hand and said, “It’s nothing. I’ll ask my doctor to come over at night.”
This calmed Vera’s nerves. She said, “Alright. In that case, I’ll take my leave, Grandpa. You don’t have to worry about things between Joe and me. After all, I’ve just gotten home. Some things take time.”
Today, one of Alexander’s friends arrived in Jipsburg. He had just finished checking into his hotel.
Although he didn’t lay out his reasons for coming on the phone, Alexander had a feeling it had something to do with the negative items appearing frequently.
Thus, he asked Skylar to come with him.
“My friend learned from Viola for a while. Then, something happened to his family and he left Jipsburg. He left for decades. Now, he’s suddenly seeking me out. Something definitely happened. I’ll go there and take a look. If it does have something to do with the negative items, I’ll ask you to come take a look with me. There’s a mall opposite. Why don’t you have a stroll there?”
Skylar nodded and said, “I’ll wait for your message at the ground floor of the hotel.”
Walking around in the mall would take time. Waiting here made more sense,
Alexander nodded and said, “Alright, I’ll go upstairs first.”
After he went upstairs, Skylar found a place to sit. As she waited, she looked out of the window occasionally, From time to time, she chatted with Natalie through text.
A cab stopped in front of the hotel. Jenny got out.
She looked at the hotel towering over her. Her eyes were rimmed red. She appeared anxious and seemed
Chapje /BA
unwilling to proceed.
Suddenly, her phone rang,
She answered the call and said, “Mr. Martin, I… I’m at the hotel. Can you give me a little more time to think? Our relationship shouldn’t be like that.”
“Why didn’t you say this while you were climbing into my bed? Don’t let me wait for too long. My room number is 2306. You can go in first. I’ll be arriving soon.”
Jenny was devastated by his firm stance. She could only agree to it.
Jenny would talk to Edwin about it. Things between them had been a mistake. Even though she’d slept with him, it was because she’d thought he was Joe.
After calming down, she couldn’t regret it more.
There were many hotels around Jipsburg. She wasn’t scared of running into any acquaintances. However, she was terrified of seeing Joe.
Jenny walked into the hotel with her head lowered.
Chapter 785
Jenny walked into the lift and pressed the button to the 23rd floor.
Skylar had been looking around. Coincidentally, she saw Jenny standing in the elevator looking extremely downtrodden.
Jenny? Skylar was a little surprised, but she didn’t give it a second thought. She could’ve been here to meet a friend or a client. However, five minutes later, Edwin showed up. This rang alarm bells for her. Wasn’t it too much of a coincidence for two of them to appear in the hotel one after another?
Skylar wasn’t a gossipy person. However, her curiosity was piqued.
Just as she was conjecturing whether Jenny was here to see Edwin, Alexander called her and asked her to go upstairs.
Skylar walked toward the elevator. She observed which floor Edwin had gotten off on.
Would it be on the 23rd floor?
When Jenny saw Edwin, she cried, “Mr. Martin, I’m just a young woman. I had a lot to drink that night. I was absolutely wasted, which was why I got involved with you. Mr. Martin, please forgive me this once, alright?”
Edwin wore a crooked smile on his face as he questioned, “Did you say you’re just a young woman?”
“Mr. Martin, I know that I’ve made a huge mistake. I hadn’t done that on purpose. I like Joe. If he found out about what happened, every flicker of hope would be extinguished for me. I’m begging you to forgive me just this once. Can’t you pretend like nothing happened?” pleaded Jenny pitifully.
Jenny regretted seeking him out. She shouldn’t have been in such a hurry. She should’ve approached Joe slowly.
Edwin grew impatient. He wasn’t there to hear her sobs. He was here to have fun.
That night at home, Jenny had been half–conscious. He hadn’t enjoyed the experience to its fullest. The most exhilarating acts needed to go down in a hotel.
“I’m not that patient. Go take a shower,” Edwin ordered.
Jenny’s eyes were filled with tears. She stuttered, “I… Mr. Martin, I don’t want to.”
Fate had been too cruel to her. First, it robbed her of her mom. Then, Joe began to loathe her. Now, Edwin was bullying her. Why was she being forced to undergo all the suffering?
“You don’t have the right to choose. You accepted the money, didn’t you? I’ll transfer more money to you by today. In the future, you must come whenever you’re called,” Edwin announced arrogantly..
Then, he threw Jenny a bag of clothes.
“Come out after you’ve put this on.”
Jenny looked at the clothes inside the bag. Her face flushed crimson as she said, “Mr. Martin, we shouldn’t do this. Our first time happened under circumstances we couldn’t control. This time, we’re both sober. If I marry Joe in the future, how would I deal with him? How would I handle myself before you?” The more she thought about it, the more deplorable it became.
“If you’re able to make him marry you, you’ll be able to please both of us at the same time. What’s so bad
Chapter 785
about that?” Edwin’s eyes narrowed gleefully.
The color drained from Jenny’s face.
She finally realized that Edwin wouldn’t spare her, even if she went on her knees and pleaded with him. If she didn’t obey him, she wouldn’t be able to remain in Jipsburg. She wouldn’t be able to stay with Joe either. In the end, Jenny slunk into the bathroom, feeling like she had been thoroughly humiliated.
Skylar arrived on the 23rd floor too.
However, the hotel was too big, with‘ countless rooms. Without information from the receptionist, Skylar had no way to confirm that Edwin and Jenny were in the same room.
She had more important things to do. Skylar pushed it aside.
After the doorbell rang, Alexander opened the door.
“Come in, Skye.”
Chapter 286
Chapter 786
After walking in, Skylar saw the man standing behind Alexander. He had a head of white hair with a chubby, round face. He looked like a kind old man.
“This is Cameron Yates,” introduced Alexander.
“Good day, Mr. Yates Senior. I’m Skylar.”
When Cameron saw Skylar, he nodded with a smile. He praised, “Viola has always had an eye for people. What an intelligent young woman.”
They had roamed the earth for decades, encountering all kinds of people. From the first meeting, they could often discern someone’s character. Besides, Skylar was a child Viola had personally chosen. There wasn’t another girl like her in the world.
“Skye, come here and take a look at this painting. Mr. Yates Senior brought it here,” Alexander said after laughing briefly. He didn’t skirt around the topic and led Skylar straight into the guest room.
It was yet another painting.
It looked like a painting from the classical era. The water in the painting
seemed to come to life and trickle down the stream.
Cameron walked over. He appraised the painting on the table and said, “I participated in an auction a while ago. Someone auctioned this painting off. His family members had died of mysterious diseases, while his company went bankrupt. With no other option, he auctioned this painting off. The second laid eyes on it, I knew something was wrong.”
“After Cameron told me about it, I invited him to Jipsburg to prevent any mistakes from happening. We can only confirm the nature of this painting once you’ve taken a look at it,” said Alexander.
Skylar glanced at the painting and said, “Let me look at it first.”
After observing the painting thoroughly, Skylar relaxed.
Just as she was about to speak, loud noises rang out from a room beside them.
The hotel had excellent soundproofing. They wouldn’t have heard what was going on if the occupants of the neighboring room hadn’t made such a racket.
The woman was shrieking pitifully. Everyone knew what was happening.
Alexander and Cameron frowned while Skylar pretended not to have heard it.
“There seems to be nothing wrong with the painting.”
Cameron froze. He confirmed, “Are you sure there’s nothing wrong?”
“Yes.”
“It looks like the fate of that family had nothing to do with this painting,” Alexander observed. He sighed in relief. He’d thought the negative items had been scattered throughout the country. If they left Jipbsurg, it would be beyond. their reach.
Suddenly, an idea popped into Alexander’s head. Viola had left Jipsburg, no one knew where she was now. Had she known about this?
and
Cameron exhaled a breath of relief alongside Alexander. He said, “That’s great. I would never want history to repeat itself. Thank God it was all part of my imagination.”
“It’s good to be alert,” responded Alexander.
Skylar listened to Cameron’s description of what happened decades ago. She had some inkling of it. Perhaps Viola had mentioned it once.
Someone wanted to use those negative items to cause chaos in others‘ lives. In the beginning, no one was looking out for this, so many people fell prey to it.
Thankfully, they were caught, and the chaos was stopped.
“Mr. Yates Senior, you must be careful even after returning home. If anything. seems off, you must talk to Mr. Gardner Senior about it,” Skylar advised.
Cameron nodded with a grin. He replied, “Alright.”
As time went on, the noises from the neighboring room grew louder. They could no longer ignore it. In the end, the three of them left the room.
Before Skylar left, she glanced at Room 2306. Just now, she thought she’d heard the mention of Mr. Martin.
Chapter 20
It sounded rather familiar. However, the voice was marred by sobs. Skylar
couldn’t tell who it was.
Was someone role–playing inside?
UT
Two hours later, Jenny dragged her battered body out of the hotel.
Her cab driver was concerned. Jenny didn’t seem to be in the right frame of mind. He asked, “Did something happen to you, miss? Would you like me to make a police report?”
Someone had clearly been rough with her, not to mention she was coming out of a hotel. Pretty girls tended to be harassed.
Upon hearing the police mentioned, Jenny shook her head. She said, “There’s no need for that. I’m fine. Please drive me home as quickly as possible.”
Jenny didn’t want to even think of what happened.
Chapter 787
Edwin had to be a pervert. He wouldn’t have inflicted that on her if he wasn’t.
What a madmant
Suddenly, a notification popped out on Jenny’s phone. It indicated that one million dollars had been transferred into her account.
Edwin had also texted her about his satisfaction with her performance.
Jenny trembled. She was seized with anger and fear. A sense of helplessness washed over her.
Would she have to deal with Edwin for the rest of her life?
No. She wouldn’t have it. Jenny didn’t want to go through that tortuous. experience ever again. It would break her,
“Mr. Martin, I can’t bear it. I can’t let myself do it. This will be the last time I meet with you.”
She waited for Edwin’s response in anticipation.
However, she was sent a video instead, it depicted her deplorable acts with Edwin at the mansion while half–conscious.
Why was there a video of it? Jenny panicked.
These videos couldn’t be seen by anyone else. If not, she was done for.
Jenny’s fingers trembled as she typed, “I’m sorry, Mr. Martin. I’ll come whenever you call for me. I’ll do anything you ask of me. Please delete that video! I’m scared that others might see it
“Remember what you’re saying now. When you’re obedient enough, I’ll delete the video.”
Jenny was rendered helpless by his response.
She put her head in her hands and broke down. Jenny muffled her sobs.
She’d made a huge mistake, and she was fully aware of its magnitude. She shouldn’t have sought Edwin out.
At Galaxy Villa, Skylar made dinner. She had gotten off work early.
Just as she finished preparing dinner, Joe came home. He didn’t change right away. Instead, he entered the kitchen and asked, “Do you need any help?”
“I’m done already,” replied Skylar.
Joe took a plate from Skylar and carried it for her.
Whenever they had dinner with each other, they usually settled for simple
homemade dishes.
Halfway through dinner, Skylar said, “I think there are a few issues in our relationship that warrants some discussion.”
Joe furrowed his brows and looked up at her. He asked, “What problems do you think there are in our relationship?”
Did she want a divorce?
“The fate of our marriage has been carved into stone from the second we entered into it. Grandma’s health makes her vulnerable to any shocks now. know you’re staying in this marriage for her. I’m also aware that you don’t like
me-”
Before Skylar could finish, Joe cut in, “Don’t put the blame on me.”
She claimed he didn’t like her. Well, did she like him? Joe had a feeling she wanted nothing more than to leave him as soon as possible.
Skylar froze. Her face fell. Suddenly, she realized they couldn’t have a measured conversation. She said coldly, “Shouldn’t you take the blame? If you weren’t in a hurry to get a divorce, why would you allow the media to capture footage of you and Vera time and time again?”
She couldn’t sit and continue eating anymore.
Skylar stood up and said, “Even though our marriage was based on a contract, that doesn’t mean you can stomp all over my dignity, nor can your crush do so too. I’m proposing that we get a divorce now. I’ve prepared myself for it.”
Joe clenched his jaw. He stood up too and said, “What’s going on between Vera and I isn’t what you think. I’ve already told you not to blame me for that.”
Chapter 788
Skylar was enraged by Joe’s explanation. What was he getting at by insisting
that she was the one who wanted a divorce?
Oh. She got it.
“Alright, I’ll wait for you to bring up the topic of divorce in the future. I won’t be coming home in the coming weeks. If you need anything, just call.”
Joe was probably bothered that she had suggested they get divorced before. he had the chance.
Skylar found it unnecessary to continue their conversation. She walked to the door, put on her shoes, and left.
He was silent. His jaw was clenched tightly. As the door slammed, he banged. his cup onto the table.
Skylar only remembered that night had fallen once she’d left Galaxy Villa. She had only brought her bag and her phone when she left. She had nothing else
with her.
A cold breeze swept over her. She calmed down.
Just now, Skylar had been too impulsive. When she thought of his attitude, her
heart sank.
Oh well. She had said what needed to be said. Skylar decided to stay in a hotel. for the night. Tomorrow, she would pack her bags and move out of Galaxy
Villa. This wasn’t a bad idea at all.
The following day, Skylar applied for a leave..
First, she rented an apartment. Then, she drove back to Galaxy Villa.
She had splurged in the past few months and purchased a lot of stuff, and she needed some time to tidy up.
Without realizing it, she’d begun to treat Galaxy Villa as her home. It was a
stark contrast to how strange it seemed to her at first. Looking at the familiar decor before her, Skylar felt as though there was a weight on her shoulders..
Her relationship with Joe was destined to fail. Joe probably thought they were. just two lonely people comforting each other.
Skylar felt a tingling in her nose. She sniffled for a bit, and then she moved faster to tidy up.
In the afternoon, Skylar headed straight to work.
When she got there, Alexander called her to his office.
Upon walking in, Cameron greeted Skylar. The latter was surprised to see the former. She said, “Mr. Yates Senior.”
He nodded with a smile and asked, “Did you sleep poorly last night? Why do you look so exhausted?”
Skylar agreed, “Yeah, it might’ve been because I only fell asleep in the early. hours of the morning last night.”
The bed in the hotel was too soft. She wasn’t used to it. In addition, her head had been swirling with a mess of thoughts. She couldn’t calm down enough to fall asleep.
“I’m here to see you. Alexander told me about many things recently. I feel extremely insecure. Thus, I would like to invite you to my home so you can have a look at the antiques I have. I’ve been collecting quite a lot of bits and bobs in the past few years. Perhaps a negative item is hidden within the collection. Would you be able to come?”
“Could we reschedule for next month? My mom fractured her fibula. She needs. someone to take care of her,” Skylar said. She understood Cameron’s anxieties.
Too many negative items had popped up for no apparent reason. It instilled panic in others easily. Someone was pulling the strings behind the scenes. These negative items seemed to penetrate every corner of society.
Cameron nodded and replied, “Alright.”
“I’ll have Caleb go with you. He can learn a little from you. I’ve got a friend working in a museum. Next week, please help me deliver two antiques over to
him to be exhibited,” instructed Alexander.
“Okay.”
Before getting off work, Simona called Skylar and invited her to her birthday party. She and Caleb would be the only guests.
Aiken had something to deal with in the afternoon. He’d sent someone to gift Simona her present.
However, after hearing that Simona had invited Skylar, he pushed his work. aside.
Simona questioned jokingly on the phone, “I think you’ve treating Skylar a little too well. Do you have a crush on her?”
“Don’t speak such nonsense. She’s married,” said Aiken after a few moments of pause.
“Oh,” replied Simona.
What a pity Skylar was married.
Chapter 789
If Skylar weren’t married, Simona would find a way to make the former her sister–in–law.
After work, Skylar and Caleb went to the mall to pick out gifts
they went to the restaurant.
or Simona. Then,
It was an inexpensive fondue restaurant. Many people were waiting outside.
“Simona has chosen a good restaurant. I heard my friends say that it was newly opened, and the fondue it sells is extremely authentic,” Caleb told Skylar after walking in.
Skylar had heard Natalie mention it before. They’d agreed to dine here together next month. Who knew Skylar would eat here first
She took a picture of the
restaurant and sent it to Natalie.
Simona had booked a private dining room. When they went in, they saw Aiken. He greeted Skylar politely before engaging in small talk with Caleb.
After everyone said hi to each other, Skylar passed her gift to Simona and said, “Happy birthday.”
“Thanks,” chirped Simona. She began opening the present.
Caleb handed his present to Simona as well. He echoed, “Happy birthday.”
She took it from him and joked, “I don’t need to guess. I know what you’ve given me. I’m more interested in Skylar’s gift.”
Caleb gave her something similar for every birthday.
It was either a bike or a helmet. If not, he would gift her some decorative items.
Caleb shrugged, brushing off Simona’s disdain.
After unwrapping the meticulously wrapped present, Simona revealed a pair of bunny–shaped diamond earrings. Simona’s eyes lit up. She enveloped Skylar in a big hug and exclaimed, “Skylar, these bunny earrings are gorgeous. I love them. I want to put them on now!”
“No problem. I’ll help you put them on.” Skylar took the earrings out and helped Simona wear them.
Although Simona carried herself like an adult, she was merely 19–years–old- just a kid, in other words. She enthusiastically expressed her love for people and things.
Aiken smiled upon seeing how well Skylar and Simona were getting along with. each other. He hadn’t seen Simona this ecstatic in a long time.
They spent their past birthdays silently, albeit with each other’s company.
Today, they were surrounded by a warm buzz of conversation.
The bubbling pot of fondue before them smelled like the wonderful aroma of companionship to Aiken.
Joe returned to Galaxy Villa slightly drunk at 8:00 pm. The mansion was shrouded in darkness, and all the lights were off.
Joe paused for a second. Then, he turned the lights on and went upstairs.
When he returned to the bedroom, he noticed that something was off. He pursed his lips as his eyes darkened.
Joe strode to the walk–in wardrobe he shared with Skylar, only to see that her clothes were all gone.
Joe clenched his jaw as he turned around stiffly. He scanned his bedroom. There was nothing to show that Skylar had even lived here.
He couldn’t believe in her audacity to pack up everything and leave. Was she so intent on getting a divorce?
“Alright. What an excellent move, Skylar!”
Joe wasn’t expecting her to be so cold and heartless. Would they get a divorce just because she said she wanted it? What did she think about their marriage?
Suddenly, his phone pinged. He relaxed his hands, which had been balled into fists. Joe opened the message.
I
It was from Jenny. She said, “Joe, why aren’t you with Skylar? I ran into her while I was having fondue with my colleagues. I think she’s dining with Mr. Parkinson.”

A few seconds, she sent him a picture. It depicted Aiken holding a ladle as he poured soup into Skylar’s bowl. He seemed careful and gentle as he looked at Skylar warmly. Skylar smiled back at him.

Chapter 790
They looked like a match made in heaven.
Although it was only a picture, Joe could see the sparks flying between them.
Joe’s fingers tightened around his phone. He bit back the impulse to throw his phone at the wall.
They hadn’t gotten a divorce yet, but Skylar was running to Aiken already. Was she this needy and desperate?
This explained why Aiken was even more panicked than Joe when Skylar was kidnapped. He’d been eyeing her from the start!
Jenny was distracted as she ate her fondue. She kept glancing at her
phone.
Her colleagues in the same department had decided to eat together at this restaurant. Jenny wasn’t feeling quite well yet, but she ignored the discomfort and came out with her colleagues anyway. She was afraid they might notice. something and spread scandalous rumors about her.
Who knew she’d run into Skylar?
Jenny purposely took a picture with Skylar and Aiken in the frame only.
She felt like Aiken harbored some romantic intentions toward Skylar, but wasn’t sure whether it was merely a figment of her imagination. Jenny had seen Aiken interact with other women. He wasn’t as eager or as friendly with
them.
She had a few friends who’d slept with him before. They said he wasn’t a considerate lover in bed. However, he was generous. Aiken was a heartless man, whether in bed or out of it.
Yet, after Jenny’s meticulous observation, she noticed that Aiken was all
smiles whenever it came to Skylar.
What did it mean when a man treated a woman well? He had ulterior motives toward her. If he wasn’t doing so for the money, he probably wanted her. Aiken didn’t need money from her. This meant he was eyeing Skylar herself.
Although Jenny didn’t want to admit it, Skylar was gorgeous. Most men
thought so too.
This picture would definitely cause Joe to misunderstand Skylar.
“Jenny, what are you looking at? You seem distracted. You’ve been in low spirits for the past few days. Have you fallen sick?” asked one of her male colleagues, Calum Pince.
Jenny said, “I’ve been feeling a little under the weather this week.”
“If we’d known you were feeling sick, we would’ve gone for something milder. A fondue is still a bit too intense for the tastebuds. You’ve only eaten a few bites.”
Jenny smiled and shook her head. She replied, “There’s no need for that.”
“I’ll go to a neighboring store and get you some chicken noodle soup,” he suggested. He was a chivalrous gentleman. When Calum saw Jenny looking so weak, he wanted to help her.
“Um, I can’t trouble you like that. I’m not quite hungry. It’s alright,” simpered Jenny. She enjoyed being fussed over. She knew that he had ulterior motives. However, she didn’t refuse his help firmly. Instead, she exhibited her vulnerabilities.
“It won’t be an issue. I’ve tried their chicken noodle soup. It tastes delicious and is easily digestible. You don’t have to worry about putting on weight.”
He set off immediately.
“Okay. Sorry for causing you such trouble. Thank you so much,” said Jenny shyly.
From the perspective of their colleagues, they seemed to be flirting. There was a little something between them.
Jenny cared not about their opinions. Wherever she went, there was an abundance of men waiting to shower her with attention. It wasn’t like Jenny asked them to do so. They did so of their own accord.
She couldn’t help but give Skylar a once over.
Skylar had a good relationship with Aiken and Simona. They chatted happily. Even Caleb, who had a stubborn temper, held Skylar in esteem.
The door to their private room was initially shut. However, they eventually
opened the door, perhaps because it was too hot inside. If not, she wouldn’t have been able to take their picture.
Why wasn’t Joe replying to her? Did he not see it? Or was he currently livid after catching sight of the picture?
Jenny couldn’t help but sneak a peek at Skylar once more. This time, Skylar looked back at her. She didn’t seem surprised by Jenny’s presence. The smile on her face from talking to the Parkinsons hadn’t faded. However, her eyes were icy, as though she knew Jenny had been watching her.
