I told her to take deep breaths and control her emotions to
avoid getting too agitated.
I wanted to call the police, but I didn’t have the strength.
Soon after, loud knocking sounded from outside the room.
I pressed my hand on her arm, signaling her not to move.
The noise outside grew more impatient as if the person
wouldn’t leave until we opened the door.
Her trembling hands were just about to dial the police when
the door was suddenly kicked open.
The intruder was wearing a mask and a hat, making it
impossible to see his face.
But the intense anger radiating from him was palpable.
The moment he saw me, he shouted angrily:
“Homewreckers deserve to die!”

As soon as he spoke, Matthew’s mother clutched her heart
and collapsed from the side of the bed to the floor.
The hospital security arrived just in time to drag him away
before he could reach me.
She was rushed to the operating room for emergency
treatment.
I was so worried that I painfully dragged my injured body to
the door of the operating room.
When Matthew arrived at the hospital, he was on the verge of breaking down, his hands gripping his hair in despair.
I had never seen him so vulnerable.
“It was those people from the livestream… they were angry
and wanted to get revenge for Caroline Clark…”
“I’m sorry… I couldn’t protect you.”
I wanted to stay and comfort him, to wait together for his
mother’s surgery to end, but he forcibly took me back to the
hospital room.
Fortunately, the surgery was successful, and Matthew’s

Matthew arranged for us to stay in the same hospital room.
This time, he stayed by our side without leaving, while his father took on the task of bringing us meals.
The atmosphere, once lightened by the resolution of previous
misunderstandings, became heavy and oppressive.
Matthew’s expression grew darker by the day.
The police frequently visited the hospital.
I knew they wanted to take my statement, but Matthew kept
them at bay.
Before I knew it, the day of my discharge arrived.
After resting for one night, I went straight to court the next
day.
It had been a month since I’d last seen Caroline, and I almost
didn’t recognize her.
The moment she saw me, she fell to her knees before me,
voice filled with pleading.

“Can you ask Matthew to forgive me? I really didn’t know you were the child’s real mother! He refused to tell me and kept it a secret, otherwise I would never have done such things!”
“You’re the child’s mother, which makes you like my own sister. Are you really going to stand by and watch my relationship with Matthew be destroyed?”
“Or is it that you still have feelings for him…”
Her words sounded sincere, but her eyes betrayed her.
It was obvious she was only afraid of going to prison and losing money.
Matthew had probably hidden the truth because he didn’t want her to get jealous. After all, who could accept that their in-laws still treated their husband’s ex-wife like a daughter?
Without hesitation, I coldly refused:
“I fully support his decision. Someone like you doesn’t deserve to be my son’s stepmother!”
Hearing this, her face changed instantly.
Her feigned grievance turned to anger.
“I knew it was you who ratted me out! Otherwise, he wouldn’t have left me! You b**h, you’re divorced, but you
still can’t let go of him!”
“How could he suddenly treat me like a different person,
even canceling our wedding? If I hadn’t seen that he was
planning to bring you and the child home, I would’ve still
been in the dark!”
Matthew had just parked the car and entered the room when he heard her words. His face instantly darkened.
