I finally breathed a sigh of relief with his agreement.
Then everything went black and I fainted.
When I arrived at the hospital, I was immediately taken into
surgery.
The next time I opened my eyes, I found myself lying in a hospital bed.
Matthew was sitting beside me, his eyes filled with worry and anxiety.
The first thing I said after waking up was, “You didn’t tell your parents, did you? I don’t want them to worry. I can handle this myself, and besides, we’re not together
anymore…”
His eyes flickered briefly at my words.
Then, I suddenly heard the angry voice of his mother.
“How could you hide something as important as a divorce

from us? Did we not treat you well? Even if you’re divorced, you’re still the mother of our grandson! Don’t we have the right to care about you? Hiding the divorce is one thing, but almost losing your life and still not telling us?”
“That’s the reason you rarely came home these past few
years or called us much.”
I looked up and saw my in-laws standing in front of me, their
faces full of concern.
I froze at her words.
No calls?
But hadn’t she been refusing me?
It suddenly came to my mind that when we divorced, I had
returned the phone Matthew.
The number I used to call her today was a new one I got
myself, so she probably thought it was a scam and blocked it.
Guilt flooded my heart.
I regretted letting my own selfishness cause them to worry
about me all these years.

Matthew’s phone rang at that moment.
His brow immediately furrowed after seeing who was calling.
I was closest to him and could clearly hear the police saying
that Caroline had requested to see him.
He flatly refused.
“We will never settle! She must pay for what she did!”
“When my ex-wife leaves the hospital, we’ll see her in court!”
He angrily hung up the phone.
His eyes landed on my injuries, and to my surprise, his eyes
welled up with tears.
Before I could say anything, he had already left the room.
I thought maybe he still had some feelings for Caroline and
had gone to clear things up with her.
While just an hour later, he returned, with our son.
As soon as our son entered the room, he ran over to my bed.

Matthew’s mother turned pale with fright at his actions and
hurriedly pulled him away.
“Your mom is sick; you be gentle to her!”
He pouted in frustration with eyes filling with tears.
He spoke timidly, “It’s my fault. If only there hadn’t been a parent-teacher meeting today…”
“Don’t worry, Mom, I already took care of all those bad people who were saying mean things!”
I couldn’t help but laugh with relief at his childish words.
I was about to say something to praise him in front of his dad to lighten the mood, but instead, I met Matthew Jones’s silent
gaze.
A wave of worry crept into my heart.
Matthew broke the silence, “I’ll go home and make dinner for you all.”
Matthew’s mother stopped him, “Your dad’s already for that. Focus on your work; I’ll take care of Laurelin here.”

I don’t know if it was just my imagination, but ever since we met, Matthew had been deliberately avoiding eye contact
with me.
After hearing what his mom said, he suddenly turned to look
at me, with eyes filled with guilt and remorse.
The sight tugged at my heart, and I forced a smile. “It’s okay.
I’ll be out of hospital in a few days, so don’t worry.”
Even though our personalities clashed and our marriage didn’t last, he had always been a responsible father and
husband.
He had always protected me and our son well.
And he got me involved today and maybe he couldn’t
reconcile with that himself.
He didn’t respond to my words and instead quietly left the
room with our son.
After he left, Matthew’s mother and I talked for a long time,
saying that she had come to terms with everything.
The best way to get along isn’t necessarily through marriage,
being healthy and happy is enough.

Before I had graduated, Matthew invited me to live with his family. Now that I have given the Jones family a chubby grandson, Matthew’s mother is overjoyed.
So now, whether I’m single or in a new relationship, she doesn’t have a problem with it.
Because she already treated me as her own daughter.
Looking at her tired eyes and the wrinkles at the corners of her eyes, my heart ached.
She stretched out her hand and gently touched the thick bandage on my forehead,
“Why don’t you stay with us from now on? There’s no one to take care of you when you’re alone.”
I tried to sit up and thank her, but the slightest movement sent pain shooting through my body.
She quickly stopped me.
“The doctor said you have a mild concussion, so don’t move.”
I lay back down and finally felt a sense of relief, meeting her gaze as we exchanged smiles.

The burden of the secret I’d been keeping from her was
finally lifted from my heart.
But in the next moment, the window in the hospital room
suddenly shattered from a thrown stone.
The loud crash made her breathing rapid, and she seemed on the verge of a relapse.
