Chapter 9
The murmurs from the crowd made Arthur Desmond’s face flush red, then pale.
Taking the opportunity, I hurried a few steps away and prepared to get into the car to leave.
“Hannah Layla!” Arthur suddenly shouted my name, pulling out a gleaming knife from his pocket.
The sight sent the surrounding crowd into a frenzy. Many people stepped back in fear, though a few middle–aged men seemed ready to intervene.
On the surface, I maintained a calm expression, but inside, my legs were trembling. If Arthur truly intended to harm me or Lila, how could we possibly escape?
As I wrestled with my thoughts, Arthur stopped a few steps away.
“Hannah, this is my final warning. Give Lila to me–I only want her!”
Perhaps startled by the scene, Lila clung to my neck and began wailing loudly.
I held her tightly. “Never! Lila will never have a good life with you!”
In the next moment, I jumped into the car, slamming the door shut just in time to block Arthur’s lunge.
Seeing that I was about to leave, Arthur’s expression suddenly shifted into a twisted smile.
He raised the knife and pointed it at his wrist. “Hannah, if you don’t agree to give Lila to me, I’ll die right here in front of you. My blood will be on your hands, and I hope you’re not afraid of ghosts haunting you at night!”
I knew Arthur wasn’t the type to actually commit suicide, but the sight still unnerved me.
I wasn’t afraid of his death; I was afraid of being haunted by the guilt if he died just to spite me.
When I didn’t respond, Arthur slashed at his wrist.
The crowd gasped in horror as blood began to trickle down his arm. Arthur collapsed to his knees in pain, though I noticed the wound wasn’t deep.
*Covering Lila’s eyes, I turned my gaze away from the unsettling sight.

After securing Lila in the car, I stepped out and approached Arthur.
He was grimacing in pain, his eyes half–closed, but it was clear from the shallow cut that he had no real intention of dying.
I crouched down and leaned in close. “Arthur, drop the act. I know you don’t actually want to die.”
“By the way, I know you secretly drugged Lila with sleeping pills so you could sneak off to meet Ella. Your actions gave her a high fever, and she had to be rushed to the hospital for a gastric lavage.”
“I have evidence of you spiking her bottle. If I hand it over to the police, do you think you’d avoid jail
time?”
“So I suggest you stay put and behave yourself. Don’t ever come looking for me again. Let’s make sure we never see each other for the rest of our lives.”
As I finished speaking, Arthur’s face turned ashen, drained of all color.
His lips trembled as he tried to comprehend how I had discovered his secret about Lila.
Seeing his expression, I knew he wouldn’t dare to disturb me or Lila ever again.
Without another word, I returned to the car and drove off with Lila, heading straight for the airport.
Today marked the beginning of our new life–a life that belonged to just the two of us.
