Chapter 6
We will never wrong an innocent person, nor will we let any wrongdoer go free. I will use my authority to punish every lawbreaker!”
With that, the judge hammered down the gavel.
“Recess for 30 minutes.”
The court would need time to investigate and verify the authenticity of the evidence, as well as to carefully consider the final ruling.
After the recess, I calmly sipped my water.
I had handled countless divorce cases before, and each of them was even more complicated than this one. Yet, I had a 90% success rate.
This time, all the factors were in my favor. Winning this case was as simple as drinking a glass of
water.
Meanwhile, Glen was in a state of panic, desperately looking for help.
He quickly called several lawyers to come to his aid.
“Get here right now! There’s only 30 minutes left before the hearing.”
The lawyer on the other end hesitated, then slowly asked, “Who’s the opposing lawyer?”
Upon hearing that it was my name, the lawyer quickly declined.
“Are you crazy? I haven’t even looked into the details of this divorce case, and I only have 30 minutes to get there.”
“If the opposing lawyer was some newbie, maybe I could give it a try, but it’s Susan! Even if you bring a thousand lawyers, none of them could compare to her!”
On the other end, Glen sneered and muttered under his breath.
“You’re a man, and you’re this cowardly? You can’t even compare to a woman. Is Susan really that impressive?
She’s just a woman. Didn’t you brag about being in the top 50 of the lawyer competition?”
Before Glen could finish, the lawyer on the phone interrupted him.
I may be in the top 50, but she’s first place! There’s a huge difference. You might not have heard of/ her name, but every case she’s handled has become a textbook example in our legal field. Even my mentor refers to her as ‘Lawyer Susan“!”
“I absolutely will not take this case. It’s not about losing, it’s about not being worthy. Find someone
else. I don’t have the ability.”
Before hanging up, the lawyer added a final piece of advice.
“But just so you know, no one else will take the case either…”
Before he could finish, Glen slammed down the phone angrily.
Then, he shot a furious look at me.
“What are you looking at? Are you so proud?”
I looked at him blankly, having not even glanced at him until now.
But I did feel rather pleased.
Soon after, Glen contacted several more lawyers.
Without exception, every lawyer he contacted refused him, with the same reaction each time.
Finally, out of desperation, Glen, whose face had turned as green as a vegetable, walked toward mé.”
It was as if he had undergone a transformation. His previous resentment turned into soft affection in
an instant.
“Sue, can we talk about something, okay?”
I gave him a cold glance, without any emotion.
“Please call me Lawyer Susan.”
I looked at my watch.
“Speak quickly, the court session is about to begin.”
Upon hearing this, Glen realized that time was running out.
He hurriedly begged, his hand clutching my arm tightly.
Sue, how about we settle this privately? After all, we’ve been together for six years. It’s embarrassing for both of us to drag it on like this, don’t you think?”
He tried to appeal to reason, speaking emotionally, but his eyes were filled with greed and
calculation.
I nodded, signaling for him to continue.
Seeing that I was slightly moved, he slowly revealed his true intentions.
“The property was all earned by me. You shouldn’t fight me for the marital assets. Of course, I will compensate you. The money and red envelopes I transferred to you earlier, you don’t have to pay me back.”
Looking at his seemingly generous gesture, I couldn’t help but sneer.
So, initially, he wanted to make me pay back all the transferred money and red envelopes.
Now, realizing that his chances were slim, he magnanimously said that I didn’t need to return the
money.
He smiled obsequiously, and I asked,
“Do you want to mediate?”
He nodded vigorously.
I smiled widely and said the harshest words,
“Dream on.”
After winning the lawsuit, I would gain far more than this.
Did he really think I was that naive?
