Chapter 5
To outsiders, it looked like Timothy had hit the jackpot, skyrocketing to success.
But to me, it was clear he was enduring humiliation, forced into this situation.
Timothy froze for a moment at my words.
Gemma’s expression darkened immediately. She cast a cold glance at me and then said to Cole, “Cole, keep your woman in check.”
“This is my wedding day. Many important figures from River City are here, and even a distinguished guest from Capital City is expected. If she doesn’t watch her mouth, don’t expect me to show you any respect.”
Cole ignored her, standing at my side like a loyal attendant, his face full of deference.
Seeing Cole’s indifference, Gemma’s face grew even darker.
When the master is upset, the dogs naturally start barking.
Gemma’s cronies didn’t dare provoke Cole, but they had no qualms about hurling insults at me.
“Selena, what’s your deal? Are you here to make trouble?”
“Just because you’re dating Cole doesn’t mean you can strut around like you own the place. What a joke!”
“Cole has had plenty of girlfriends. Once he’s bored with you, what will you even be worth?”
“Today is Gemma’s big day. Stop being ungrateful, or you’ll regret it later.”
Among the barking voices, Sophie was the most eager to ridicule me.
It seemed as though only by attacking me could she earn her master’s favor and fully integrate herself into Gemma’s circle.
Their yapping was getting on my nerves.
I turned to Cole and asked, “Are they here yet?”
Cole quickly replied, “My dad went to the airport to pick them up personally. By now, they should be

Arriving.”
Just then, a commotion erupted at the entrance of the banquet hall.
Moments later, the prominent business leaders of River City began exclaiming in surprise and rushing toward the door.
A distinguished guest from Capital City had arrived!
Gemma’s eyes lit up as she stared at the banquet hall entrance, her entire body trembling with excitement.
“Someone from the Johnson family in Capital City has arrived! Our Paxton family is finally going to rise to the top!”
She then turned to Cole, her gaze filled with disdain and arrogance, as she mocked, “So what if your Mason family is the wealthiest in River City?”
“When it comes to legacy and connections, your family can’t even compare to ours!”
“Look at that the butler of the Johnson family himself has come to congratulate me on my wedding. Do you even know what that means?”

From now on, in River City, who would dare say your Mason family can overshadow our Paxton family?”
- Gemma’s smug arrogance spread to her cronies, who were equally excited and thrilled.
They all understood the saying. When one rises to power, everyone benefits.
But one wonders if they were familiar with the proverb, When the city gates catch fire, the fish in the moat suffer.
Cole remained standing respectfully by my side, ignoring Gemma’s jeers. His gaze toward her was like that of someone watching a fool.
All eyes in the banquet hall were now fixed on the entrance.
As the elderly man in the black tailcoat moved forward, every gaze followed him, expressions varying from awe to curiosity.
“Unbelievable! The Paxton family managed to invite someone from the Johnson family in Capital City. That’s a huge honor!”

This is a game changer for the Paxton family. If they can build a connection with the Johnson family, even the Mason family will have to tread carefully around them.”
“Looks like the balance of power in River City is shifting. Better start getting on the Paxton family’s good side.”
As the butler in the tailcoat walked toward our side of the hall, Gemma’s excitement only grew.
She shot Cole and me a smug, triumphant glance before pulling Timothy along to greet the butler
herself.
With all eyes on her, she beamed with pride, preparing to how respectfully to the butler.
But the butler walked right past her, completely ignoring her existence.
The scene stunned everyone in the hall.
After all, it was Timothy and Gemma’s wedding. The butler’s presence naturally made everyone assume he was here to congratulate the couple.
But when the butler ignored Gemma entirely, it left the crowd in shocked confusion.
What happened next was even more astonishing.
The butler stopped in front of me, bowed slightly, and said with a smile, “Young Miss, apologies for being late. Traffic was terrible on the way here. I hope you won’t mind.”
