Chapter 2
A woman with heavy makeup snapped at me, “Who are you? Get out!”
I ignored her and turned my gaze to the woman sitting next to Timothy
She was seated in the most prominent position, short and slightly overweight, with an air of arrogance on her face like a self proclaimed queen.
This must be Gemma.
I looked at Timothy and said, “When did your taste become so poor? What do you even see in her?”
Then, turning to Sophie, I asked, “I treated you like a sister, yet you stabbed me in the back. Why?”
Before Timothy or Sophie could respond, Gemma looked at me with disdain and said arrogantly, “What’s all the noise about? Do you think this is a place where you can do as you please
As soon as she showed her displeasure, her cronies stood up in unison, glaring at me with hostility as if ready to pounce.
Timothy, sitting beside Gemma, quickly stood up. His face darkened as he said, “Selena, get out of
here!”
“It’s over between us. That ten grand I gave you was compensation for the years you wasted on me Don’t cling to me anymore!”
With that, Timothy pulled out a check from his pocket and threw it at me.
I didn’t even bother to glance at it. Instead, I looked at Timothy, feeling like he was a stranger.
This wasn’t the Timothy I knew.
After so many years together, I thought I understood his character.
Even though his words were heartless, I could sense his urgency. He seemed to be trying to protect me from harm and wanted me to leave this dangerous place as quickly as possible.
But what was really going on here?
At that moment, Sophie stood up and walked toward me.

She grabbed my hand and pretended to be concerned. “Selena, why didn’t you call us before coming to River City?”
“How did you even find this place?”
“Some things are too complicated to explain here. Let’s step outside and talk. Don’t disturb Gemma’s enjoyment.”
I pulled my hand away from her grasp and stared coldly at her. “Whatever you have to say, say it
here.”
“Sophie, you knew about my relationship with Timothy, yet you introduced him to Gemma. You’re such a good sister to me, aren’t you?”
“The luxury car you’re driving–it must have been a gift from Gemma, right?”
“How does it feel to sell out your friends for personal gain? I can’t believe I never saw this side of you before.”
My words made Sophie’s face turn ashen.
Gemma, with a fake smile plastered on her face, said to Sophie, “Sophie, if you let yourself be humiliated like this and don’t fight back, we’re all going to look down on you.”
Gemma’s words seemed to steel Sophie’s resolve.
She suddenly raised her hand and slapped me hard across the face. With a venomous glare, she said, “Selena Johnson, don’t take my kindness for granted!”
“Do you have any idea what kind of life I’ve endured since graduation?”
“No money, no connections–trying to survive and establish myself in a big city like River City, do you know how hard that is?”
“I refuse to go back to that rundown village. I don’t want to marry early and have kids. I want to stay in this city and build a life for myself, and I only have myself to rely on!”
“I work for Gemma’s company. She’s interested in Timothy, and he’s into her too. All I did was make the introduction. What’s wrong with that?”
“I just want a better life. Is that so wrong?”
“I didn’t expect Sophie to hit me. The slap was so hard that I staggered back a few steps, my cheek
burning with pain.

ny’s eyes flickered with a trace of guilt and worry as he glanced at me. His anxiety seemed to grow as he scolded, “Selena, from now on, we have nothing to do with each other. Leave and never
Come back!”
As soon as he finished speaking, Gemma gave him a sidelong glance, as if she had caught on to something. She sneered, “Timothy, feeling sorry for her, are you?”
Timothy quickly replied. “Of course not! I just don’t want her hanging around here and ruining our meal, that’s all!”
