Chapter 9
Vivian’s face twisted in disbelief, her expression mixing grievance with shock.
“Harvey, it’s just a toy. Can’t Sunny apologize to Lucky and settle this?”
Harvey stared at the shattered pieces on the floor. His voice was soft but carried a chill that made Vivian involuntarily shudder:
“This was Lucky’s grand prize from the Lego championship. It’s one of a kind in the world. Do think a mere apology is enough to fix this?”
Vivian was speechless, but Sunny, hearing this, became defiant.
“I’m not apologizing! Why should I apologize to some mistress’s kid?!”
Harvey’s eyes widened in shock.
“What did you just say?”

Vivian tried to cover Sunny’s mouth, but it was too late. Sunny stood with his hands on his hips, defiantly shouting:
“Lucky’s mom is a mistress, and Lucky is a mistress’s child! If his mom hadn’t shamelessly seduced you back then, you were supposed to be my dad!”
Harvey’s voice turned as frigid as ice:
“Who told you that?!”
Sunny flinched slightly, sneaking a glance at Vivian before raising his voice again:
“After the last parent–teacher meeting, the kids at kindergarten said so! Only a mistress’s kid wouldn’t be acknowledged!”
“His house, his dad–they were supposed to be mine and my mom’s!”
Harvey’s expression darkened to the point where it seemed like water could drip from his face. He thought back to the parent–teacher meeting when Lucky had excitedly called him “Dad,” only for him to sternly order him to correct it.
How much had that hurt Lucky? He had never considered it.

But now, hearing these words coming out of another child’s mouth, he realized how devastating they must have been.
No wonder my face had looked so pale that day. No wonder Lucky’s gaze toward him had become filled with disappointment.
What had he done?
A surge of anger and regret exploded in his chest. With reddened eyes, Harvey grabbed Sunny by the collar and dragged him to the door before tossing him onto the ground.
Vivian, horrified, rushed after them, pulling Sunny to his feet. Her voice was filled with tears as she accused him:
“Harvey, take your anger out on me if you must, but the child is innocent!”
Harvey’s mind filled with echoes of my pleas:
“Harvey, you can misunderstand me all you want, but the child is innocent. Can’t you show him a little fatherly love?”
And then he thought of me–the proud woman who never softened under his accusations, never wavered under his indifference.
The only thing that ever made me yield was for the sake of our child.
. Overwhelmed by frustration, Harvey called security to escort them out. Then, with mounting
anxiety, he began frantically dialing the company.
By the time his call reached the HR director, his fury was barely contained.
“Hello!” he barked.
The other end of the line was noisy, and through the receiver, he heard the HR director gently comforting a child:
“Daddy has work to finish. I’ll come play with you and your blocks in a little while, okay?”
A soft, childlike voice responded, filled with playful innocence:
“Then hurry up, Daddy, or the big monster’s gonna take over your room!”
The HR director chuckled in response to the child before moving to a quieter place. With a hint of confusion, he asked:

Mr. Landon? What’s wrong?”
The deep male voice snapped Harvey out of his daze. Clearing his throat awkwardly, he asked:
“What’s the reason for Emily’s absence today?”
The HR director paused for a moment before quickly replying:
“Assistant Hope? She already resigned.”
“What?!”
Harvey’s exclamation was loud and unrestrained as his hand balled into a tight fist.
The HR director hurriedly explained:
“Assistant Hope submitted her resignation early the day before yesterday.”
“She said her husband is working abroad, and she wanted to take her son to reunite with her family. She mentioned she wouldn’t be coming back.‘

Harvey gritted his teeth, his voice low and sharp as he demanded:
And no one thought to inform me of this?”
The HR director hesitated briefly before replying:
“Mr. Landon, you specifically stated that Assistant Hope was to be treated as a regular assistant from now on. Following company protocol, her resignation didn’t require senior–level approval.”
“Her determination was clear, so I processed her resignation according to the usual procedure. Is there a problem?”
As Harvey listened, his grip on the phone tightened, his knuckles whitening as the urge to laugh bitterly welled up inside him.
When had Emily ever had a husband abroad? How had he been unaware of this supposed development?
