However, out of respect for his father’s reputation, both William and Agnes stepped forward to greet the family generals, saying, “Thank you for your hard work.”
The family generals bowed in return, replying, “You’re too kind.”
As they entered the manor, the families of the generals, who had previously hesitated to greet them, now rushed forward to embrace their returning fathers and husbands, excitedly catching up.
Pablo turned to the generals and said, “You all go rest. Take a break for the next few days, spend time with your families.”
Pablo, as always, maintained a strict and disciplined military demeanor, but now, with a rare concession, the generals were thrilled.
After the generals retired to their quarters, Margaret smiled and approached, her voice warm and affectionate. “You must be exhausted from celebrating today. I’ve already had a drink to soothe you prepared–please, come in and have some.”
Pablo looked at her with a hint of approval. “You are thoughtful.”
Margaret chuckled softly. “Between us, such words are unnecessary.”
Pablo, after all these years, replied, “You’ve been with me all this time, serving my parents, and even seeing off my mother. I remember everything. No matter what mistakes you’ve made, I’ll never cast you aside.”
Margaret’s heart skipped a beat, her smile wavering slightly as she tried to maintain composure. “What are you saying?”
Pablo replied solemnly, “This is my promise to you.”
After that, he walked briskly into the hall. William shot a nervous glance at Margaret, who motioned for him to follow.
Once inside, Margaret saw Pablo sitting at the head of the table, his whip placed on the table beside him. This was a typical practice for him, but to William’s eyes, it felt ominous. He was now filled with dread.
Margaret instructed, “Bring the drink to ease his mind.”
As the servants departed, Margaret took her seat beside William. Agnes asked, “Father, was the journey exhausting?”
Pablo replied, “The hardships were in the war, not the journey. The battle is won, and the only thing on my mind is returning home.”
Agnes, smiling sweetly, added, “Mother must have missed you terribly.”
Pablo glanced at Margaret, noticing her cheeks flush with color. He shot Agnes a teasing look.

“Have some soup,” she said softly, her voice melodious and captivating.
Margaret’s and William’s faces turned pale. They had warned this woman, yet here she was, appearing before them once again.
Pablo’s eyes narrowed with cold fury as he looked at her. The room went still, with everyone holding their breath, fearing his reaction.
The woman had prepared an entire story in case Pablo questioned her presence, assuming that if he knew about William’s marriage to another woman, she would be able to explain herself.
But to her surprise, Pablo merely glanced at her and didn’t question who she was. Instead, he took the drink and began sipping it.
Eleanor, somewhat disappointed, had hoped to make an impression on Pablo and hoped he would ask her name. But now that he had merely acknowledged her and moved on, she reluctantly stepped back, retreating out of the room.
She noticed the fury in Margaret’s eyes and the disdain in William’s, but she couldn’t afford to remain passive.
As she reached the door, Margaret gave a subtle nod to one of the maids, who immediately left the room. The maid returned with instructions to call Eleanor.
“Eleanor, Margaret wants you to bring something to Pablo,” the maid whispered.
Eleanor happily exclaimed, “Alright, what should I take?”
“Follow me,” the maid said.
Hearing that she would still have the chance to appear in front of Pablo, Eleanor had no reason to doubt and hurriedly followed the maid.
As they passed the front courtyard, the maid suddenly changed her expression. Two servants appeared, and one of them sternly said, “Margaret has ordered that the concubine be taken back to her room. She is not allowed to leave tonight.”
Eleanor, furious, retorted, “How dare you! You tricked me here?”
The maid sharply replied, “It’s you who have dared too much. Margaret forbids you from leaving, but you refused to listen. You’re asking for trouble.”
With that, she signaled the servants to drag her away.
Eleanor screamed, “Who dares to lay a hand on me?”
The maid coldly responded, “If you still want to stay in the Valen family, it’s best you don’t defy Margaret. Otherwise, you’ll regret it.”
Eleanor froze. “She would dare to divorce me?”
“Divorce?” The maid sneered. “No need for a divorce letter. She’ll just throw you out of the house. You entered as a concubine, don’t forget your place.”

Enraged and embarrassed, Eleanor was about to scream, but the maid slapped her hard and ordered, “Take her away.”
The servants moved forward, each grabbing one of her arms and dragging her off.
Inside the main hall, Pablo had finished the drink and was eyeing Eleanor’s departure. He turned slowly to William, his expression serious.
“Now that I’ve returned, it’s time to deal with your marriage,” Pablo said slowly.
William froze, unsure how to respond, his face pale as he glanced desperately at Margaret.
Margaret’s voice cut through the silence. “What are you staring at? Kneel and apologize to your father!”
William immediately dropped to his knees, head bowed low.
Pablo’s fingers drummed the table, the rough texture of his calloused hands tapping out a sharp rhythm. He raised his head slightly, his chin set with determination as he looked at William. “Apologize for what?”
Margaret’s brow furrowed as she sighed. “Pablo, after you left for war…”
But Pablo interrupted her, his voice cold and firm. “Let him speak for himself.”
Margaret hesitated, anxiety flashing in her eyes. How could he explain this on his own?
“Let me handle this…” she started, but Pablo pressed his hand down.
“Sit down. I want to hear it from him–what has he done that deserves an apology?”
William, trembling as he knelt, felt his father’s sharp gaze even without looking up. His hands grew cold, his head buzzing, and his lips trembled. “I… I, Father…”
“Speak!” Pablo suddenly slapped the table, his voice rising. “A man should be able to speak plainly. How can you expect to do great things if you can’t even speak up? Are you planning to hide behind your mother’s skirts forever? When she dies, will you follow her into the grave?”
Margaret’s face stiffened, but she gently encouraged William. “Tell him, speak to your father.”
She had already given them their lines, but she wasn’t sure William would be able to deliver them effectively. Still, as long as he was emotional, Pablo might still listen.
Agnes stood and said, “Father, let me speak for him. William has always been afraid of you. If you get angry first, he won’t be able to say anything.”
Pablo’s eyes shifted slowly to Agnes, and he asked, “You want to speak for him? Can you marry his wife for him? Can you bear his children? Can you inherit the marquisate for him? Can you fight in battle for him? Can you die for him?”
Each question came louder than the last, and Agnes was left speechless.
