In regards to Joyce’s proposal, Dicky appeared surprised by her actions. Today, Joyce displayed a different side of herself. Not only did she take the initiative to hold his arm at the Empire International Hotel, but she also joined him for a meal at the restaurant and even suggested taking a photo together.

He had assumed that after cruelly abandoning her at their wedding, she would despise him. Therefore, he had only sent a text message to Joyce during their class reunion, not expecting her to harbor any positive feelings towards him, let alone….

As this realization dawned on him, Dicky’s eyes lit up and his heart fluttered with joy.

Observing Dicky’s prolonged silence, Joyce bit her lip and awkwardly spoke, “Dicky, is my request causing you any trouble? After all, I am your ex–girlfriend, and Alicia doesn’t like me. If she were to see that photo, it would surely cause complications. I apologize for bringing it up.” With a hint of disappointment, Joyce returned to her seat and continued eating the remaining steak on her plate, appearing somewhat resentful.

Witnessing Joyce’s demeanor, Dicky’s heart immediately grew anxious, and he suddenly felt the urge to pull her into his embrace.

Joyce rarely displayed such self–pitying expressions in the past. She often portrayed herself as a strong individual who faced difficulties alone. Her efforts were unlike those of a typical woman. This prevented Dicky from fulfilling his desire to protect her. Furthermore, Joyce possessed a rather old–fashioned mindset. Every time she expressed a desire for intimacy, he would reject her advances, causing her to lose interest in him completely.

Additionally, Joyce had been acting increasingly peculiar lately. Her behavior annoyed him, and he began diverting his attention to Alicia, a close friend who often accompanied Joyce. Alicia was a beautiful girl who possessed exceptional makeup skills. What’s more, Dicky found himself genuinely interested in her. On the night when Dicky became so exasperated with Joyce that he left the house, Alicia took the initiative to visit Dicky. They ended up engaging in intimate activities and secretly left together without Joyce’s knowledge.

Dicky suddenly realized that he was staring blankly at the woman in front of him. He couldn’t determine whether Joyce had become more beautiful or if he had simply developed a fleeting infatuation towards her. Nevertheless, he felt comfortable in her presence, a sensation that was entirely different. He even contemplated ending things with Alicia and rekindling his relationship with Joyce.

However, Alicia’s family held significant connections in the city and had provided substantial support for his current career. He couldn’t simply give up without careful consideration.

“Joyce, it’s just one photo together. Alicia won’t be so childish. You’re overthinking it,” Dicky dismissed his inner thoughts, approached Joyce, and smiled at her. “Come, let’s call the waiter next to the cake to help us take the photo.”

“Are you sure it won’t be a bother?” Joyce bit her lip.

“Not at all, not at all. What do you mean?”

While posing for the photo, Dicky didn’t treat it as a casual encounter. He naturally raised his right hand and placed it on Joyce’s shoulder. However, Joyce found the touch of his hand unsettling. She had the spontaneous urge to remove his hand multiple times. Yet, in order to maintain the facade, she restrained herself and offered a satisfying smile instead.

Joyce took the phone handed to her by the waiter and examined the photo on the screen. Initially, she believed she would remain composed, but she still appeared somewhat awkward. Meanwhile, Dicky wore an exceedingly happy smile in the photo. If anyone were to see them in such an intimate pose, they would assume they were a couple, blissful and sweet.

However, only Joyce knew what lay beneath that smile and the current state of her heart. She and Dicky could never return to the past. All she felt towards him now was disgust and complete hatred.

“The photo turned out really nice. Thank you,” Joyce expressed her gratitude to the waiter who had taken their photo. She then extended her phone to Dicky. “Dicky, you can have a look too.”

Dicky leaned forward, observing the sweet couple in the photo. His heart felt complicated, yet he couldn’t deny that he and Joyce were fundamentally different. He believed that he and Joyce were a true couple.

After indulging in food and wine, the night outside grew tranquil. Although the city lights remained illuminated throughout the night, the streets appeared somewhat deserted once the shops closed.

Dicky accompanied Joyce by driving her to the hotel entrance. Before exiting the car, he tightly grasped her hand and inquired about her doubts from earlier until now.

“Joyce, I understand that my previous actions may have caused you sadness. However, I genuinely want to know, do you forgive me for what I did to you in the past?”

As the man’s voice trailed off, Joyce’s hand was held firmly. Forgive? Did Dicky truly believe it was appropriate to ask such a question?

A woman encountered her paralyzed boyfriend at the most extravagant wedding of her life, only to be betrayed and humiliated by her best friend in front of everyone. Given these circumstances, not resorting to violence against the shameless couple was already a commendable feat. Yet, Dicky naively asked if she forgave him?

In the end, Joyce couldn’t comprehend this world. Was Dicky too confident, believing he was so irresistible that he could still pursue her after all the cruelty he had inflicted?

Joyce truly desired to slap Dicky across the face, to make him realize the truth. However, she restrained herself. Since Dicky was so “naive,” it would be better to play along and execute this game flawlessly.

“Dicky, I used to despise you,” Joyce bit her lower lip, gazing at Dicky with a sorrowful expression. She appeared exceptionally beautiful, especially with the hotel’s enchanting lighting casting an ethereal glow upon her face, creating an illusion, a dream–like appearance that evoked pity.

“But you also know how I used to behave towards you. I couldn’t control myself in certain situations.”

Dicky observed the woman before him, and a surge of burning desire ignited within him as he recalled those memories. Even if he remained foolish, he understood the implications behind her words.
