Chapter 5
Winter drifted in darkness for what felt like eternities before consciousness slowly returned. The healing potions kept her eyes sealed, but her wolf hearing picked up nearby
voices familiar ones.
“Alpha, you’ve let this go too far. Winter values her hands more than life itself – they channel her moon magic. By choosing to heal Scarlett first, you could have destroyed her. Is that what you wanted?”
“How could I want to harm Winter? She woke at the worst moment. If I’d chosen to heal her first, my memory loss deception would have been exposed. There’s only twenty days left – I just want to play a bit longer. I won’t let anything happen to her.”
“Nothing happen? Did you not hear the Moon Healer? Another minute’s delay and Winter’s hands would have lost their magic permanently. If she learns the truth, you’ll lose any chance of salvaging your mate bond.”
The person holding her hand tensed at these words, their palm now slick with anxiety.
Minutes later, she felt lips brush her forehead, the voice rich with certainty. “She’ll never know. Everything’s arranged. In twenty–three days, the healers will declare my memories returned. Everything will be as it was.”
After a heavy sigh, one set of footsteps left the room.
The other remained, murmuring softly by her bedside. “Winter, our mating ceremony is so
close. I’ve already commissioned the bonding rings. You’ll see them the day my ‘memories‘
return.”
“After our bond is sealed, I’ll take you to see the Aurora Borealis. Remember three years
ago, when you made that wish upon the falling star?”
“When you said you wanted to be with me forever… I’ve never been happier. I want to grow old by your side too.”
A the potions wore off, Winter recognized the voice of her rambling visitor.

Reed Sullivan. Her supposed mate–to–be.
He seemed devoted to her care, summoning healers every half hour to check her condition.
He tenderly helped her drink water, adjusted her blankets, never leaving her side.
Until she fully awoke.
All that tender attention vanished like morning mist as he hurriedly retreated from her
room, his scent thick with unease.
Watching his hasty departure, Winter’s eyes filled with bitter amusement.
Minutes later, a pack healer entered to check on her. Winter noticed how carefully she
concealed the medical scrolls.
“Who’s been caring for me these past days?” Winter’s voice was rough from disuse.
The healer’s eyes darted away, her words stumbling. “I’m not… not certain. Pack attendants,
I believe.”
Winter felt bone–weary.
She checked her phone. Moon–month’s 8th day. She’d been unconscious for three days.
Her messages contained only territory announcements and pack notices.
She closed her eyes, silently praying her name–change ritual would be approved soon.
Reed stayed away after that, but Scarlett flooded her with messages daily.
Half were taunts and intimate photos of them together.
The other half were recordings from various locations, including their shared bed.
*Winter never opened them, blocking the magical connections entirely.
On the 15th day of the moon–month, Winter completed her discharge rituals.

Gathering her healing potions and discarding everything else, she headed for the exit.
Atthe entrance, she encountered a former packmate who had once sought to court her during their training years,
As they caught up pleasantly, Reed materialized from nowhere, yanking her away.
His face was dark as storm clouds, eyes flickering dangerously. “Who gave you permission to get so close to him?”
Winter met his gaze coolly, pulling her wrist from his bruising grip. “Didn’t you lose your memories? Deny me as your mate? Who I choose to speak with is no longer your concern.”
Without waiting for his response, she hailed a passing black sedan and disappeared into the evening traffic, leaving Reed speechless in the medical center’s parking lot.
