Chapter 4 The First Confrontation
On the road to the capital, Christopher disclosed all the details to Charlotte. Vanessa, however, remained silent in the carriage. Charlotte watched Christopher, who talked non–stop, lost in thought. Christopher wasn’t a bad person; he didn’t despise her. He was just too softhearted, and sometimes a little silly and naive.
In her previous life, thanks to Vanessa and Eleanor’s manipulation, her relationship with Christopher had worsened over time until they eventually severed ties. This time around, she wouldn’t let history repeat itself.
hristopher’s mansion was located in the Shallow Water Bay of the capital, surrounded by an unending stretch of opulent mansions in wealthy neighborhoods. Charlotte followed her parents. stepping into the villa at a leisurely pace.
“Our young miss has returned!”
The maidservant hurried over as they entered, setting off a stir throughout the mansion. Other servants poked their heads out, curious about the young miss who had been away for nineteen
years.
Footsteps echoed from the staircase. Eleanor descended, wearing a white cotton dress, followed by a handsome young man with a bright smile and fair features–Edward, Christopher’s only son and Charlotte’s biological younger brother.
Memories from her previous life resurfaced. She and this brother of hers had never gotten along. She had believed that he only regarded Eleanor as his elder sister. However, when the family proposed using her blood to save Eleanor, Edward was the one who opposed the idea.
“Younger sister…” Eleanor’s cry brought Charlotte back to reality. Since Eleanor’s birthday was slightly earlier, Charlotte was addressed as her little sister.
“Welcome back.” Eleanor’s lips curved into a smile, radiating the image of a pure and virtuous white lotus flower. This posture seemed to embody the legitimate heiress of the family, despite the knowledge that she wasn’t related by blood. Having lost her biological mother and been raised by the Bellerose family for many years, she was still considered a young miss of the Bellerose family.
Meanwhile, Charlotte, the pure–blooded Bellerose family member, was more like an outsider.
“Younger sister, I’ve cleared out my room for you. You can move in whenever you’re ready,” Eleanor kindly offered, appearing magnanimous.
1 Gotta Go My Own Way
“Why are you redecorating your room?” Vanessa frowned, reproaching Eleanor. Her tone was stern, but her eyes held a hint of fondness. “Our house is so large, and we’re short one room? Eleanor, Maven’t I told you? You’re still my daughter, the Bellerose family’s heiress. Nothing will change, and you don’t need to switch rooms.”
“But that room originally belonged to my little sister,” Eleanor lowered her eyes, adopting an innocent and kind appearance. “And it’s the best room on the second floor. My sister might find the other rooms uncomfortable…”
“How could she possibly find them uncomfortable?” Vanessa cast a glance at Charlotte, her gaze conveying its meaning. A girl who had grown up in a mud–brick house in the village would consider even the worst room in the mansion to be luxurious.
Charlotte remained composed, observing the situation. Just like in her previous life, when she
returned to the Bellerose family, Eleanor proposed switching rooms. Back then, Charlotte hadn’t seen anything wrong with the suggestion. After all, reclaiming her belongings was only natural,
wasn’t it?
However, this action had earned Eleanor sympathy and pity from the entire family, while portraying Charlotte as petty and lacking generosity.
“No n
need,” Charlotte spoke calmly, “I’ll take the first room on the third floor.”
