Chapter 8
My stepmother screamed and rushed forward, trying to pull Gavin off Rose.
“Gavin, let her gol Let her go! You’ll kill her!”
“Let’s talk this out. Don’t get so worked up!”
“She’s your fiancée, Gavin. Please, let her go!”
When Gavin ignored her pleas, my stepmother turned to Daniel Gilbert, crying and shouting.
“Look at this! Your daughter is going to be beaten to death!”
“This is all Lily’s fault, forcing Rose to her death! How is she supposed to live now?”
“If Lily weren’t so unforgiving, none of this would have happened!”
I sneered and sat down beside Evan.
“Oh, Mrs. Gilbert, don’t put such a big hat on me. I can’t wear it.”
“Rose’s current situation is her own doing, and it’s your indulgence that led her here.”
“Don’t blame me for pushing her to her death. Even if I did, doesn’t she deserve it?”
By then, Gavin had exhausted his strength and slumped to the floor, panting heavily.
Rose lay on the ground, her face unrecognizable, blood pooling around her. It was unclear if she was
even alive.
The scene was unbearable. I frowned and turned awa
away.
Evan gently patted my hand and gestured to his bodyguards.
“Take these two out of here.”
“If they’ve committed attempted murder, call the police. If they deserve prison, send them there.”
“Don’t let them dirty Lily’s eyes any further.”
Hearing this, Gavin finally came to his senses and scrambled toward us.

was wrong! I was wrong! It’s all my fault!”
Mr. Daxton, Mrs. Daxton, please have mercy! Spare me this once, please!”
“I promise I’ll disappear. I won’t show up in front of you again!”
Evan kicked him away, his expression filled with impatience.
“Get lost, and don’t let your filthy blood stain Lily.”
“And as for the Duke family, you just reminded me. It seems your family has had it too easy these
past few years.”
“Within 24 hours, if the Duke family isn’t bankrupt, consider me incapable.”
Gavin turned ghostly pale, but before he could say another word, Evan signaled the bodyguards.
“What are you waiting for? Do I need to drag him out myself?”
The bodyguards immediately sprang into action, dragging Gavin and the unconscious Rose out of
the room.
My stepmother, worried for her daughter, wailed and followed them out.
Before I could fully take in the scene, Daniel Gilbert’s voice sounded beside me.
“Mr. Daxton, I’m Daniel Gilbert, Lily’s father.”
“I failed to discipline my wife and daughter properly, which led to this situation. I deeply apologize
the harm caused to Lily.”
“Rest assured, Mr. Daxton, I’ll divorce that woman and kick her and her daughter out of the Gilbert
family!”
Evan didn’t even look at him. Instead, he turned to me, letting me make the decision.
I understood his intention and smiled gratefully. Then, I looked at the man before me.
“Did you really know nothing about what they did?”
as no
“You turned a blind eye because my mother was gone, and they could please you. To you, I was different from Rose–just a tool. As long as it benefitted the Gilbert family, it didn’t matter if it was
me or Rose marrying Gavin.”

BUT
Daniel opened his mouth to argue, but I interrupted him.
Now that you see I’m marrying Evan Daxton, you cast them aside without hesitation.”
“Whether it was my mother, Rose, or me, we were all just pawns to you, weren’t we?”
“And don’t forget–I’ve already cut ties with the Gilbert family. Mr. Gilbert, please leave.”
Daniel, enraged, slammed his cane on the floor repentedly.
“Families argue, but cutting ties? That’s absurd!”
“I know you’re angry with me, but severing ties? How can you say such a thing?”

“Please leave. And make arrangements–because soon, the Gilbert family will disappear alongside the Duke family.”
Goodbye, Mr. Gilbert.”
Daniel had no choice but to turn back to Evan.
“Mr. Daxton, you see, Lily is young and impulsive. Once you’re married, we’ll all be family. Can’t you
reconsider-”
Evan ignored him, taking my hand instead.
“I only listen to my wife.”
Daniel stood frozen, unable to respond.
Not wanting to deal with him any longer, I let Evan lead me out of the room. Surrounded by bridesmaids and groomsmen, we made our way downstairs.
In the elevator, I leaned close to Evan’s ear and whispered, “Thank you, Evan Daxton.”
Evan’s lips curled into a faint smile as he leaned toward me.
“You’re welcome, Mrs. Daxton.”
