Chapter 5
From the moment Evan entered, the crowd had intentionally kept me and Lexi hidden behind them, as if afraid our presence would sully his eyes.
I tried to call out to him, but Rose suddenly crouched down and gripped my neck tightly.
“If you want to live, you’d better shut up!” she hissed.
“Do you know who that is? That’s Evan Daxton! If he gets angry, none of us will survive.”
“You can mess around with us, but do you think you can get away with it in front of him?”
Lexi couldn’t hold back any longer and shouted at the top of her lungs.
“Mr. Daxton! Mr. Daxton! Lily is here!”
“If you don’t come quickly, they’ll beat her to death.”
“Please, Mr. Daxton, look at Lily!”
Rose’s face turned pale, and she immediately let go of my neck and backed away.
Gasping for air, I collapsed into a fit of uncontrollable coughing.
Evan froze momentarily, then quickly pushed through the crowd to stand in front of me.
Seeing me in such a miserable state, he hesitated, unsure if I had other injuries and not daring to
touch me.
He lifted his head and scanned the room, his voice so cold it sent chills down everyone’s spine.
“Who did this?”
Perhaps thinking Lexi and I had brought this on ourselves, Rose rushed to distance herself from us.
“Mr. Daxton, it was us. I’m Rose Gilbert, her sister,” she said hurriedly.
“She shamelessly dressed like this and tried to steal my husband. When we caught her, she even brazenly claimed she was marrying you today!”
“But don’t worry, Mr. Daxton. Our family has already disowned her. We won’t let her tarnish your

reputation.”
-My stepmother quickly chimed in, seemingly desperate to claim credit.
“That’s right, Mr. Daxton. A man of your stature attracts all kinds of women trying to climb the social ladder.”
“Our family may not be as prominent as the Daxton family, but we are upright people. We would never bring trouble to you.”
“It seems this shameless woman somehow heard about your wedding today and dared to spread this outrageous lie!”
Evan’s gaze grew colder and darker. He gritted his teeth, speaking each word with chilling precision.
“Is that so?”
“Very well.”
“Very well indeed.”
Hearing Evan Daxton’s ambiguous words, the expressions on Rose and my stepmother’s faces grew even more excited.
Lexi was about to speak, but I squeezed her hand and shook my head..
I wanted to watch these people continue their performance in front of Evan. The higher they climbed, the harder they’d fall later.
Gavin Duke, believing this situation was helping Evan and desperate to forge a connection with the Daxton family, strode over and took Rose’s hand.
“Mr. Daxton, that shameless woman not only tried to marry me but also attempted to ruin your reputation. Of course, I wouldn’t let that happen.”
“Today is my wedding day, and also your wedding day with Mrs. Daxton. Isn’t this an incredible
coincidence?”
“It must be fate, Mr. Daxton.”
The onlookers, groomsmen, and bridesmaids alike, started chiming in with envy.
“Duke is so lucky to hit the jackpot like this. He’s actually connected to Mr. Daxton.”

“With the Daxton family’s backing, Duke’s family is going to soar. Oh my God, they’ll be unstoppable
in the future!”
I scanned the room, observing the smug and envious faces around me, and let out a cold laugh to
myself.
It was time.
Clutching the bod
“Evan…”
tightly around me, I spoke in a trembling voice.
The two syllables shocked everyone in the room. They turned toward me, their eyes filled with
disbelief and doubt.
Rose was the first to react. She raised her hand, intending to slap me.
“You shameless woman! Are you out of your mind? Do you even know who he is?”
“He’s Mr. Daxton–Evan Daxton! How dare you address him so intimately!”
“If you want to die, don’t drag the Gilbert family down with you–ah!”
Evan grabbed Rose’s raised arm, tightening his grip as though he intended to break it. His voice, laced with anger, wasn’t loud but carried clearly through the room.
“My wife. And you call her a shameless woman? A used–up slut?”
“You treat the future lady of the Daxton family like this and still hope to form connections with me?”
“Do I look like someone who’s easy to trifle with?”
Rose gritted her teeth, enduring the pain as she stammered out a defense.
“Mr. Daxton… you must have misunderstood.”
This is my sister–a used–up woman discarded by countless men.”
“Please let me go–it hurts, it hurts so much…”
