Chapter 8
In the next moment, both Ellie and the knife clattered to the ground.
Gavin looked at me in shock.
Then, as if realizing the gravity of what he had done, panic overtook him.
“Scarlett, it’s not what it looks like–I just acted on instinct…”
But before he could finish, I interrupted him.
“Instinct is the truest reflection of someone’s character. Don’t worry, I’m fine. I trained in Brazilian
Jiu–Jitsu years ago, and I’m still strong.”
After my paralysis, I hadn’t had the chance to use those skills. Though a bit rusty, it felt good to put them into practice again.
“This is your idea of protecting me? What a joke. Was that protection, or were you using me as a
human shield?”
dropped my smile and stared at him coldly.
“Gavin, this is the difference between us.”
“Your upbringing defines the scope of your thinking. My perspective was shaped by my family, while yours remains confined to the fields of a rural farm–feudal and outdated.”
“We were never from the same world. I once believed our differences in mindset didn’t matter, but
now I see I was wrong.”
Each word I spoke seemed to drain more color from Gavin’s face.
Time stretched endlessly before he finally responded, his voice hollow.
“You’re right. We’re not from the same world.”
Let’s divorce, as you wish.”
Hearing those words, I finally exhaled, feeling a weight lift from my chest.
Later, Ellie Johnson was arrested and sentenced to prison for attempted assault.
He Regretted It After Realizing My Fortuna
the next day, Gavin handed me the signed divorce papers.
He looked like he had aged years overnight.
His once dark hair was now streaked with white.
As I saw his signature on the papers, It felt as though all the shackles holding me down had fallen
away.
We went to the marriage registry to finalize the divorce.
When the clerk asked if we were certain about ending the marriage, Gavin hesitated for a long time
without saying a word.
Instead, he turned to look at me.
“Scarlett, it’s not too late to regret. We can still-”
Before he could finish, I cut him off by responding directly to the clerk.
“Yes, I want a divorce!”
My tone couldn’t hide the joy in my voice.
Hearing this, Gavin could no longer hold back his emotions and broke down crying.
When the clerk asked again, he finally spoke, his voice filled with anguish and regret.
“Yes, let’s divorce.”
When I received the divorce certificate, I couldn’t help but smile.
Seeing how happy I was, Gavin’s heart seemed to shatter even more.
Finally, it was over. I felt a lightness I hadn’t felt in years.
Even my attitude toward Gavin softened a little.
I patted him on the shoulder and said,
“Happy divorce.”
With that, I turned and walked away.

ut Gavin called out to me, stopping me in my tracks,
rarely turned back, but this time, I did.
He remained silent for a long time before finally managing to choke out a single sentence.
“Scarlett, I wish you nothing but success in the future.”
“Of course,” I replied simply.
After that day, I never heard from Gavin again.
The next piece of news I received about him was that he had become parabred
paralyzed.
They said that after the divorce, Gavin couldn’t handle it and jumped from a building.
But instead of dying, he ended up paralyzed from the waist down.
Later, his worsening condition plunged him further into despair.
He tried multiple times to end his life but was stopped by his parents each time.
He spent the rest of his life in a daze, lost and broken.
