Chapter 4
I returned to my little nest, reflecting on how meticulously I had lived these past years.
I had developed a bad habit of being picky, which resulted in a restless night of tossing and
turning.
Upon arriving at the office, I coincidentally ran
into Jarvis.
I greeted him politely, maintaining my distance as I nodded.
Jarvis furrowed his brow.
“Jar!”

Joey hurried over, stepping in between us.
“Hello! I’m Jar’s fiancée.”
I nodded slightly and replied, “Hello.”
At the sound of my voice, her expression
faltered for a moment.
I didn’t linger for more small talk and headed straight for the elevator.
“Riley, right?” Joey followed closely behind, with Jarvis trailing her.
“I’ve heard Jar talk about you often. Your work skills are impressive.”
“But you know, it’s probably better for a girl not to always stand out, mixing with a bunch

of men. You should spend some time shopping with your friends or getting some beauty treatments. It’s so much easier. Leave the heavy lifting to the men.”
“Isn’t that right, Jar?”
Jarvis gently ruffled her hair, his tone unusually tender.
“Could I say otherwise?”
I remained unresponsive to Joey’s provocation.
She must have caught the sound of my voice and rushed to flaunt her sweetness, declaring her claim over Jarvis.
“At the company, please call me ‘Ms. Terry.‘ If you don’t understand, let HR arrange training

for you–meals and accommodations covered.”
Ignoring the reactions behind me, I flicked my fingers to brush off any trace of Joey’s touch.
My actions, however, provoked Jarvis.
He dismissed Joey and walked straight into my office.
I frowned in displeasure. “Mr. Fraley, knocking is a basic courtesy.”
I emphasized the last two words, making my point clear.
I echoed Joey’s words back to him.
He smirked, leaning down to trap me between
his arm and the sofa.

“Last night, it was you who opened the door.”
His gaze drifted over my skirt, his meaning unmistakable.
Slap!
Without hesitation, I delivered a sharp blow to his face.
A bright red mark instantly appeared on his pale cheek.
Jarvis shrugged off the sting, chuckling as he straightened up and took a seat across from me.
“I’ve transferred the villa in the west of the city to your name, and the land you were interested in is nearing approval.”

Jarvis squinted slightly, his expression
indifferent.
“Let’s part ways amicably.”
He always managed to hit my sore spots with precision.
The knives I threw out ultimately found their way back into my own flesh.
In this moment, he stood high above me, much like those who fancied themselves my stepfather.
Professing love while buying it off with money.
The thrill of a new affair became a facade, painted in the name of love.

When Joey hurried in, carrying a lunchbox, she stumbled upon me splashing water on Jarvis.
She screamed as she rushed in and slapped me across the face.
I never let myself suffer in silence.
The only loss I might have sustained was falling into Jarvis’s trap.
My raised hand was halted in mid–air, caught by Jarvis.
He positioned himself protectively in front of Joey, his tone furious:
“Riley! This is not a place for your outbursts!”

I raised my other hand and delivered a sharp slap to his face.
Seeing the mirrored imprint on his cheek brought me a sense of relief.
“Without Jar, would you have reached this position?” Joey rushed in to defend Jarvis.
“You’re fired.”
“On what grounds?” Joey tilted her head, trying to appear imposing.
“On the grounds that you entered my office without permission, attempted to attack a company executive, and I hold forty percent of the shares!”
Joey faltered, her eyes darting around.

Seeing Jarvis silent on the matter only emboldened her to challenge me further.
“Jar is the largest shareholder, and I am his fiancée.”
“What are you, a nobody? If anyone should leave, it’s you!”
A crowd had gathered outside the office, eager to watch the drama unfold.
Jarvis remained silent, tacitly supporting her actions.
Continuing this argument was no longer necessary.
“Fine, let’s break up.”

“I’ll transfer my shares to you at market price.”
“Jarvis, I’ve already done more than enough.”
In silence, Jarvis’s expression cracked slightly when I produced the termination agreement.
Perhaps he hadn’t anticipated that I had prepared the paperwork and was ready to step aside.
Joey wore a smirk, emboldened by her favored status.
“Who called the police?”
I walked over, covering my face, nearly
stumbling along the way.

“Officer, I’ve been assaulted.
I feel dizzy and nauseous.”
