Chapter 4
The rain poured heavily.
Traffic delays made me late, and by the time I reached the hospital, Joseph was already gone.
Geneva, furious, wanted to confront the other
woman. I stopped her, and she looked at me in confusion, then with frustration.
“At this point, you can’t still be soft–hearted, can you?”
“Joseph helped you years ago, but your parents has paid him back. You don’t owe him anything anymore. Are you going to let him walk all over you?”

Of course not.
Before coming to the hospital, I had already sent someone to deal with Joseph. I had also gathered all the information about Melissa. She was just a small–time player with no background, trying to latch onto a wealthy man to establish herself in the city.
There was no need to confront her so soon.
I guided Geneva to a good vantage point and soon saw Melissa leaving the hospital. Before she could even get into her car, she was grabbed by a few people dressed like country folk.
In her panic, Melissa tried to push the man away, but he raised his hand and slapped her across the face.

“You little bitch.”
“Riding in such a nice car, and you’ve forgotten
about me?”
“Hand over the money.”
“If you don’t, you’ll regret it.”
The rain drenched the city, blurring the streets and turning the city into a surreal, foggy scene under the streetlights.
Melissa was too obvious in protecting her belly.
The man’s face twisted into a sneer. “Oh, whose seed did you get pregnant with to be so precious?”
Melissa bit her lip, looking pitiful.

But I’m not Joseph. I pulled out my phone, zoomed in, and recorded the scene. The man’s
restless hands wandered down Melissa’s
neckline to her sensitive areas. Her face flushed red as she finally spoke.
“Let go.”
“Don’t touch me.”
“My husband is rich and powerful. If you keep this up, I’ll have him have you arrested.”
Melissa tried to shake him off but couldn’t. The
man’s other hand grabbed her by the throat, his hands roaming her body in plain view, attracting a crowd. The man laughed.
“Don’t think I don’t know. Your ‘husband‘ hasn’t

even given you a proper title,” he said gruffly. “You’re just his captive lover on the side. If you’re really so capable, have him come find me and marry you.”
The onlookers‘ sympathy turned to disdain.
Then someone said, “I thought she was pitiful, but turns out she’s just a mistress.”
“Damn, that belly’s just an illegitimate child.”
“Being a mistress these days is so cheap. As long as you’re decent looking, spread your legs and present yourself, it’s enough. How pathetic.”
As the crowd grew more hostile, someone took note of the car’s license plate. “I think I’ve seen that plate somewhere. Maybe it belongs to some big entrepreneur.”

“Oh my god, is it real?”
“Absolutely.”
The onlookers‘ scorn for Melissa intensified. Her face flushed red as she shouted, “I’m not a
mistress!”
“Only those who aren’t loved are mistresses.”
Her desperate protest only cemented her status. The crowd’s disdain was palpable. A rural woman suddenly kneeled in front of Melissa, weeping.
“You heartless thing, you come to the city and completely forget about your mother.”
“I’m eating simple, humble meals in the village

while you’re cruising around in a luxury car.”
“Are you even human?”
Melissa tried to resist, but the elder woman lay down on the ground, crying out to the heavens.
“God, I raised my daughter with nothing but hard work, and now she’s such a heartless
creature.”
“Let me die.”
“Just let me, this old woman die.”
Melissa stood helplessly, the criticism shifting from her being a mistress to her neglecting her parents. The condemning stares were unbearable. She cried out, “Stop talking about
it!”

“Stop!”
The woman sprang up with a quick movement, extending her hand. “Pay up.”
Melissa attempted to struggle but was overwhelmed by the crowd’s relentless pointing and condemnation. Realizing her position was too compromised to fight back, she relented. She handed over a sum of money. As the man left, he couldn’t resist groping Melissa one last time, grinning maliciously.
“If you had been obedient from the start, it
would have been better.”
