Joseph’s WhatsApp lit up for the second time.
I glanced at the person still busy in the kitchen, worried it might be work–related, so I picked it up to check for him.
In WhatsApp, a message from someone named Melissa appeared: “She’s old and worn out now. Don’t touch her. She’s filthy.”
My heart sank.
Scrolling up, I saw Joseph’s messages to her: “Don’t worry, I can’t get hard even when I touch

Since he doesn’t cherish it, why should I torment myself? But one thing’s for sure–I’m not someone to be trifled with.

her.”
“Don’t compare her to you, it’s an insult.”
“My babe is so cute, and my wife, is just an old hag. If it weren’t for the years we’ve spent together, I’d have left her by now.”
Melissa had sent a few voice messages.
I converted them to text, and she said, “My new lingerie has arrived. Let me take a photo for you first.”
“Do I look good in it?”
Attached were several explicit photos, the girl coyly biting her finger and blinking, just like a sleazy movie starlet, making me feel a wave of physical disgust.

The last sentence hit me like a boulder, leaving my head spinning and my chest tight with a dull ache. I set the phone down. Joseph had just finished preparing the last dish, and when he turned around, our eyes met. He saw me holding his phone.
A flicker of panic flashed through Joseph’s eyes, but he quickly regained his composure.

Suddenly, I found it all quite ridiculous.
I set the phone down and walked towards him.
Joseph, are we getting a divorce?”
The spatula in his hand clattered to the floor, and he didn’t even bother taking off his apron before striding over to me. “Honey, who’s been feeding you these rumors?”

He glanced down at the now–black screen of his phone.
“Did someone say something to you?”
“Don’t listen to them.”
Joseph wrapped his arms around me.
“I love you, baby.”
“I’ve loved you since we were kids. Only you.”
His voice trembled with an urgency, as if trying to prove something.
“If I ever betray you, may I never find peace.”
