Chapter 8
Previously, shortly after I was proposed to, I attended one of Ryan’s family dinners.
At that time, Mrs. Cohen outwardly expressed her approval and affection for me, yet her words.
and actions revealed her disdain.
She would deliberately bring up topics about social status and family background, only to feign shock when I seemed unsettled.
Aware of my own inadequacies compared to Ryan, I tried to mask my discomfort with a polite smile.
But despite my efforts, I ended up being tasked with cleaning up the dishes, treated like a

*Lia, we consider you part of the family, so you wouldn’t mind, would you?”
could only agree through tears, burying my grievances deep inside
Meanwhile, Ryan paid no heed to my distress. happily sitting on the sole with Nola, feeding her grapes in a display of sweetness
Now, the situation was different
Mrs. Cohen, with a beaming smile, addressed
“Lia, I know you’re seriously ill, and treatment requires money and nutrition. I’ll cover all your
expenses. Could you clarify the situation?”

“Clarify what? If it’s to promote Ryan and
Nola’s relationship, I’d be more than happy to spread the word and wish them a lifetime of happiness.”
Mrs. Cohen’s expression twisted momentarily but quickly returned to its former amiable demeanor.
“Why, Lia? We’re all family here, and we
should think of the Cohens‘ business, ensuring everyone benefits financially.”
“Are you suggesting that I should receive shares in the Cohen Group?”

Mrs Cohen’s face turned pale with my words, and she pointed at me, tembling with anger,
unable to articulate a response.
“Lydia, you–you–you’re truly insatiable. Ryan could have chosen anyone, but he picked someone like you—so unprincipled and distorted in your views.”
With that, she stormed out, muttering curses and shedding any semblance of her previously
refined demeanor.
It was clear that mother and son shared not
only their appearance but their volatile tempers
as well.
Soon after, my mother arrived in a fury and slapped me across the face.

“Lydia, what’s wrong with you? Rejecting such a great match and causing a fuss about divorce. I’m telling you, this wedding must proceed, and you have no say in the matter.”
The slap left my face stinging, and I could only look up at her with tear–filled eyes, pleading.
“Mom, I have stomach cancer. Ryan doesn’t want me anymore. Please, would you help me? It won’t cost much. I’m begging you…”
My mother, as if handling a hot potato, quickly retorted.
“Stop being such a burden. Our money is meant for your brother’s house. Don’t call me ‘Mom‘ anymore; we are no longer related.”
With that, she muttered curses under her breath
