Chapter6
Dragging my stuff into the cottage, I checked out what my stepmom had done with the place. Not gonna lie – it was way better than I expected. The whole thing had this cozy cabin vibe, like something straight out of a fairy
tale.
They’d strung up these little twinkle lights and greenery all over, matching the white curtains that went from ceiling to floor. The cottage had a mini living room with a little kitchen area, plus a bedroom with its own bathroom. Pretty much everything I needed – wouldn’t have to go up to the
main house much at all.
“Huh… not too shabby,” I muttered, hauling my bags into the bedroom and dropping them on the bed. Mom always told me to unpack the bedroom first whenever we moved – that way when you’re tired at the end of the day,
at least your room’s done and you can relax.
I was just starting to unpack when my phone started blowing up with notifications. “Ugh…”
I’d barely been here five minutes and my phone was already going crazy.
Pulled it out to see texts from Dad. Great.
‘Come to the house. Need to talk to you.‘
Of course he wants to see me now. Couldn’t be bothered to pick me up
from the airport though.
Slipping my flats back on, I walked up to the main house and came in through the back door. No clue where I was supposed to find him in this massive place, but Vicky was right there in the kitchen, ready to play tour guide.
“Finally. What took you so long?” She huffed, rolling her eyes. “Come on.”
Pretty obvious she was gonna try to make my life hell while I was here. Too bad for her I wasn’t the pushover I used to be. If she thought she could treat me like dirt, she had another thing coming.

following her through this maye, doyed this song whine dbor “Always knock first,” she said at snotty, looking at me wat was some kid who didn’t know basic manners
“Yeah, whatever.” I rolled my eyes, knocked, and waited then bas sad to come in, I made sure to give Vicky this super sweet fake smile before gang
. in.
If she kept this attitude up, I was gonna make it my personal mission to drive her nuts. Sure, i might be more into books and nature than dema, but I could definitely bring the chaos when I needed to
Mom could back me up on that one–1 used to be a total handful
Walking into his office, Dad got up from behind this fancy brown desk, all smiles. “Emily, look how grown up you are
“Well, it has been two years,” I said, trying to smile as he came in for probably the most awkward hug ever. But hey, at least I was making an effort.
“Yes, it has,” he sighed. “Hope the cottage works for you. Vicky and I thought you’d want your own space now that you’re older. Plus, you won’t have to deal with all the crazy that goes on in the main house.”
I laughed a little. “Yeah, the cottage is really-”
