Chapter 4 She’s Pregnant

Lisette was admitted to the obstetrics and gynecology department at the hospital. The test results came back swiftly. She was six weeks pregnant, just over a month and a half along. Rhea, holding the results with a radiant smile, seemed to light up the room with her joy. In stark contrast, Lisette was stunned. I’m pregnant … How could this be? Each time they had been intimate, William had used protection. It seemed impossible for her to be pregnant, given these precautions. Lisette’s heart pounded, caught between disbelief and a twinge of excitement. We have a child … Rhea immediately called her husband and her father-in-law, her excitement evident in her voice. Seeing Rhea’s reaction, Lisette felt a surge of anxiety.
With a divorce pending, who would this child belong to? Me, the Prestons, or would it be terminated? Her hands clenched into fists. No, I can’t let anyone know I’m pregnant! Desperately, she blurted out, “Rhea, I’m not pregnant!” Rhea looked at her as if Lisette were out of her mind and, without a word, left, still holding her phone. Rhea tried to reach William, but for some reason, his phone was unreachable. As Rhea departed, Lisette knew she had to reveal the truth about the divorce to prevent further issues. “Rhea, I’m divorced from William! I can’t be pregnant!” Rhea halted in her tracks. “What did you say?” … Hyatt Hotel, Calliton. After receiving Rhea’s call, Kurt Stevenson, William’s chief secretary, went straight to the hotel to find him. The door opened to reveal Mabel, clad in a seductive silk robe. Kurt gave a polite nod. “Ms. Burrows.” Mabel assessed his expression and said, “Go in. Mr. Preston is in the dressing room.” An intelligent woman wouldn’t create unnecessary fuss.
“Thank you.” Kurt entered the dressing room, where William was adjusting the buttons on his shirt. William’s features were striking, and his physique was perfectly proportioned. His eyes were as deep and enigmatic as the cosmos, shifting between inscrutable depths and intense emotions. He exuded the air of a seasoned businessman, authoritative and captivating, with a magnetic presence that made him appear exceptionally valuable. “What’s the matter?” William asked. Kurt replied, “Mrs. Preston is pregnant.” William’s hand hesitated as he fastened his cufflinks, and the atmosphere around him seemed to change. Even Mabel, who had been casually leaning against the door with a glass of wine, was momentarily taken aback.
A moment later, Kurt left, and Mabel’s lips curled into a sardonic smile as she addressed William, “Pregnant? William, what’s going on here?” William shrugged into his suit jacket, his tone as indifferent as ever. “It was an accident.” Mabel threw her wine glass on the floor. “An accident? You broke up with me after I kissed Neil, and you went and married someone else on a whim. Now you’ve got her pregnant? How do you think that makes me feel?” Her pride couldn’t handle such disrespect, especially from William. William finally turned to face her, his eyes showing a rare glimmer of softness. “Mabel, I gave you a chance.” Mabel laughed coldly. “So this is your way of getting back at me?” William faced her directly, the fleeting tenderness in his eyes replaced by a cold detachment. “I said it was an accident.” Mabel turned away, but within two seconds, she had regained her composure. Her anger vanished, replaced by her characteristically confident smile. “Fine. I’ll pay for my past mistakes. How you handle this is up to you. But remember, I can live just fine without you!”
