“It seems like I’ve chosen the perfect day, Frank remarked, his eyes fixed on the bustling photo shoot ahead.
Lisette looked over and said with a smile, “Such a beautiful day deserves to be appreciated.”
Frank snapped his fingers and chimed in. “Absolutely!”
“Let’s go inside.”
“Sure.”
After paying the entrance fee and asking the owner for basket, the two of them ventured into the cherry
orchard.
Perhaps because it was the weekend, the orchard was filled with visitors.
As they walked in, they saw several small groups already picking cherries.
Looking at the clusters of ruby–red and juicy cherries hanging from the branches, Lisette felt her earlier frustrations begin to dissipate, a smile softening her features.
“Here, try this out. I had rinsed it off,” Frank said.
He offered Lisette a bunch of cherries, the dark red one glistening with water droplets.
Lisette noticed the almost empty bottle of mineral water in his hand and chuckled. “It’s fine even without washing.”
She took the cherries and popped one into her mouth.
The sweet juice spread in her mouth and sent warmth straight to her heart. The sweetness lifted her spirit.
They walked deeper into the orchard, picking and eating cherries as they went.
Initially, Frank had hesitated to eat unwashed cherries, He saw how much Lisette loved them. Frank gave in and joined her.
Suddenly, Frank’s phone rang. Lisette glanced at him and urged, “You take the call; I’ll head over there?
“Okay!”
Lisette continued walking, but she stopped abruptly a short distance ahead.
A woman stood among the cherry trees, her form–fitting black dress shimmering in the sunlight with gold threads woven through the fabric.
One arm crossed over her chest while she was on the phone.
“No, I need it delivered by the day after tomorrow, at the latest. William’s grandfather’s birthday is next Saturday, and I need to prepare ahead of time.”
Lisette’s grip on the basket tightened.

That voice belonged to Mabel; she would never forget it.
She turned away and forced herself to walk on.
That voice reminded her of how foolish, laughable, and pathetic she had once been.
Mabel ended the call and turned. She spotted a slender ligure slipping behind a cherry tree.
Her brow furrowed slightly.

“Alright.”
Mabel glanced back in the direction where the figure had vanished, but she saw nothing.
At that moment, voices from the left caught her attention. She looked over and saw more people in the orchard.
The cherry orchard appeared to be bustling with people today.
“Yes, let’s head over.”
“Okay.”
The two of them walked away.
Lisette hurried back toward the entrance. When her phone rang, she realized she’d forgotten about Frank.
Sure enough, it was Frank calling.
She rubbed her temples and tried to calm herself before answering the phone. “Frank.”
“Lisette, where are you?”
“I’m just heading to the restroom.”
“Alright, I’ll wait here for you. Come over when you’re done.“”
“Okay”
