Chapter 89
Jason asked, “Do you think I would lie?”
Iris shook her head vigorously. “You’re a man of your word.”
Jason chuckled, then got up to retrieve a document folder from his study, handing it to her. ” The case is quite complicated, so take your time to study it.”
Iris nodded. “Thank you, Mr. Just…”
“No need to thank me.” He looked at her with a meaningful gaze. “Don’t forget that you agreed to put off all the thank you gifts for now, accumulate them, and give me one big gift in the future.”
For some reason, Iris smelled a trap. She asked, concerned, “What if, when the time comes, can’t afford what you want?”
Jason leaned back in his chair. “You can offer yourself instead; I’ll accept that.”
“What?!”
“Just kidding,” he said. “Don’t worry; what I want, you can afford,” he added mysteriously.
Iris brushed off the uneasy feeling. After all, she believed Jason didn’t have any interest in her. She was a divorced woman, and he was like a deity in their field; surely, he would only be interested in someone who was his equal.
As Iris returned home with the documents, she realized she had left her phone behind, which was now ringing incessantly.
When she finally answered, her mother’s voice came through, loud and worried. “Where were you? Why didn’t you answer your phone? I was so worried about you!”
“I forgot my phone at home. There’s no need to freak out…” Iris remarked.
“How can I not freak out? You’re a woman, out there alone; what if something happens to you? “Cassie’s tone mixed anger with concern.
Iris held the phone away from her ear to protect her eardrum. “I can take care of myself.”
“Do you have time to come home for lunch tomorrow?”
“Sorry, I’m afraid I can’t.” Iris planned to study the case today and meet with the client. tomorrow, so she couldn’t make time.
“It’s okay; give me your work address, and I’ll bring you some food.” Cassie reacted quickly. This way, she would be able to ask her daughter about her love life and check out her workplace at the same time.
“I work at the Golden Path Law Firm. Call me when you arrive,” Iris replied.
“Okay.”
As she hung up, Iris smiled. Her mother was always so impatient. Despite being yelled at, Iris felt warm inside. It was comforting to be cared for.
However, after reviewing the case file, her smile faded.
If the previous cases had been opportunities for growth, this case felt like a true test of her abilities.
She could find no breakthrough points in the case.
After reading the case file, she struggled to sleep that night, her mind racing with thoughts about the case. Perhaps a discussion with the client tomorrow would reveal a turning point.
But as soon as she stepped into the law firm the next morning, she was startled by Ted’s extravagant display of affection.
Upon entering, she saw him dressed impeccably with a bundle of nine hundred and ninety- nine red roses next to him, as well as a banner that read, “Iris, I like you. Please go out with me.”
Every person in the law firm witnessed the spectacle.
Iris felt the urge to find a hole to hide in. She suspected that Ted was not someone from this century. Did he time travel from the 80s or 90s? His method of courting was so tacky and embarrassing.
“Iris…”
Seeing her, Ted approached with a smile.
Iris quickly pulled him aside. “Ted, you’re embarrassing me…”
“I thought you like roses?” he asked, “Did I scare you?”
Iris shot him a look that clearly said, ‘What do you think?‘
“It was Yvonne’s idea,” Ted quickly defended.
Iris was speechless.
“And you believed her? Hurry up and take these things away.”
