Chapter 86
Jason saw that from the other side of the car. “Did you hurt your waist?”
“Huh?” Iris looked up. “Oh, yes.”
“How did you get hurt?”
Closing the car door, Iris avoided eye contact. “I was pricked by a nail.”
Jason didn’t press further; as a skilled lawyer, he was adept at reading between the lines. Although he didn’t know how exactly she got injured, he sensed it was related to her ex- husband.
“Do you still have feelings for him?” he asked, gazing intently at her.
“If I did, I wouldn’t have gotten divorced,” Iris replied with a smile. “I’m not someone who drags things out.”
She didn’t file for divorce when she found out about Wendy. She only made the decisive choice to leave Stanley after she had completely given up on him.
Jason looked like he wanted to say something, but ultimately held his tongue.
Iris walked ahead, leading the way. “The restaurant’s not that far; it’s just over there.” She pointed to a restaurant bustling with people at the entrance. Despite the chilly weather, many patrons were enjoying barbecue outside.
“Are you
cold? If not, we can sit outside,” Iris suggested. It felt too stuffy indoors.
“I don’t mind,” Jason replied.
Iris found a small table with stools outside. Jason looked at the stool disdainfully, so she wiped down his stool with a tissue for him.
After settling in, she perused the menu.
“The specialties here are skewered meat and garlic ribs; I’ll order two of each.” She looked up at him. “Do you have anything else you want to eat?”
“You decide,” he replied.
Iris ordered what she knew to be delicious, keeping the order modest since it was just the two of them. She also ordered a large bottle of cola. While barbecue was typically enjoyed with beer, the cold weather made it less suitable. If it were summer, cold beer would be perfect for barbecue.
The waiter asked how spicy they wanted it. They had options: non–spicy, sweet and spicy, medium spicy, and very spicy.
“Medium spicy,” Iris said.

“Non–spicy,” Jason remarked, glancing at her.
The waiter asked, “Which one is it?”

“Non–spicy,” Jason instructed firmly.
Iris, thinking Jason couldn’t handle spicy food, said to the waiter, “Non–spicy it is.”
After the waiter left, Iris commented, “Eating barbecue without spice is missing half the taste.

“Spicy food is bad for your wound,” Jason replied casually.
Iris was taken aback. She had assumed Jason didn’t want it spicy due to personal preference, but it turned out he was concerned about her.
She lowered her gaze, absentmindedly spinning a disposable cup on the table. “It’s not that serious…”

“Still, you should be careful,” he said coldly. “I don’t want my subordinate working with an injury. People might think I’m exploiting you. They’ll think I’m heartless.”
“You’re a good boss,” Iris responded sincerely.
Jason raised his eyebrows, amused. It was unclear whether he was pleased or displeased with her compliment.
Truthfully, barbecue without spice did lack flavor, especially the skewered meat. The garlic ribs were acceptable due to the marinade. But overall, Jason earnestly commented, “It’s so–so.

Iris, while chewing her food, wanted to point out that of course it was tasteless without spice, but she refrained because he was doing it for her sake.
Meanwhile, Dennis was selling sushi at a stall nearby. A customer ordered sushi and asked him to deliver it to the barbecue shop. When he arrived at the barbecue shop, he saw his daughter and a man eating barbecue together.
