He knew Iris well; she often brushed off minor injuries. He recalled a time when she accidentally cut her finger while chopping vegetables. It bled profusely, but she simply applied a band–aid on the wound. The wound took a long time to heal.
“I did,” Iris lied. She wanted to avoid further conversation with him.
Stanley didn’t buy her words.
“I know you didn’t. I have some medicine for you. These are to be consumed orally, to prevent tetanus and inflammation since the wound might be deep. And this one is for external application. Remember to keep the wound dry…‘
“Why are you doing this?” Iris asked.
He had never been a caring person. In the past, if she had a minor injury, he would just ask, ” Why didn’t you go to the hospital?” He had never bought medicine for her or shown concern for her well–being.
She remembered accidentally cutting her finger once. She still had to cook for him afterwards. He didn’t even ask if she was okay. And now, after their divorce, he had suddenly become so caring.
Just then, Jason walked out. When he spotted Stanley, he paused for a moment. He then approached Iris and asked, “Should I give you two some space?”
“No, Mr. Just, get in the car,” she replied.
Jason noticed the medicine Stanley was holding, and his eyes turned thoughtful. He opened the car door, sat in the passenger seat, and fastened his seatbelt. Iris raised the window, started the engine, and drove away, leaving Stanley behind in a cloud of exhaust.
Stanley watched the car grow smaller, clenching the medicine in his hand as his anger rose. He wished he could tear the car apart. Frustrated, he threw the medicine into a nearby trash can, but that wasn’t enough to quell his anger. He kicked the trash can over, scattering its contents on the ground. His chest heaved with pent–up emotion.
His phone rang, but he ignored it. The ringtone ended, but quickly sounded again. Hé answered with a frustrated tone, “What?!”
The caller was taken aback by his harshness. Then, she asked carefully, “What’s wrong, Stanley? Did something upset you?”
Fiora’s gentle voice contrasted sharply with Iris‘ cold demeanor, providing Stanley with a sense of comfort.
See? Plenty of other women want me and are concerned about me, he thought.
“It’s nothing. What’s the matter?” he asked, his tone softening.

“Your mother told me you’re not feeling well, so I came to your house to see you, but you’re not in. I just wanted to check on you…”
“I’ll be home soon,” he replied.
“Okay, I’ll wait for you.” Fiora’s voice was bright with joy.
When Stanley returned home and opened the door, he found Fiora waiting for him, her expression filled with warmth. “Welcome home,” she said, her voice gentle and loving.
“Mmh,” he replied, entering the house.
Fiora helped him take off his coat and hung it on the rack.
Watching her, he was reminded strongly of the old Iris. Overcame by emotion, he rushed over and hugged her from behind.
Fiora was initially surprised, then blushed with delight, softly calling out, “Stanley.”
He turned her face towards him and pressed his lips against hers. He held both her hands in place as he kissed her forcefully.
Fiora’s heart raced, thumping wildly in response.
“Do you love me?” he asked.
She nodded excitedly. “Yes, I love you.
“I may not marry you. Are you still willing to be my woman?” Stanley’s eyes were clouded, as if a certain emotion had overpowered his reason.
He wanted to vent his frustrations.
Or perhaps, he was seeking solace in this manner
What he couldn’t get from one woman, he would seek in another.
