Chapter 142
“I have nothing to say to you. I’ll see you in court,” Iris said, suppressing the fear and pante within her, trying her best to maintain a calm and resolute demeanor.
Ted chuckled, “Iris, you can’t win.”
Not only did she lack evidence, she also had no backing.
Although the Zeller family was in trouble, they’re still much more powerful than the Glover family.
Connections matter, too.
The Zeller family had been doing business for years. They had a lot of connections. Even if Iris tried to make some noise, Ted could easily suppress it.
Iris was aware of that too; she just refused to stay quiet.
Her heart sank further. How could criminals be allowed to roam free just because they’re powerful people?
Seizing the moment, Ted’s tone softened as he said, “I swear to you that I’ll treat you well.” He looked deeply into her eyes, his gaze filled with love.
He truly loved her.
He could hardly hold back his affection for her and his desire to have her.
“You’re sick!” Iris exclaimed. She was sure that he was mentally ill, and his illness must be pretty serious!
She walked away.
Ted rushed forward and wrapped his arms around her waist. “Iris, marry me…”
“Ah!” Iris was terrified. She struggled fiercely. “Let me go!”
A figure suddenly appeared out of nowhere. Iris barely had time to register what wa happening before she heard a sickening snap and Ted’s cry of pain.
Jason was holding onto Ted’s wrist. He had forcefully pulled Ted’s hand away from Iris.
Iris quickly hid behind Jason, trembling.
Pale from shock, her eyes were wide with fear.
Ted glared at lason, his expression filled with fury. “It’s you again!”
If it weren’t for Jason, Ted wouldn’t have felt so desperate nor resorted to such extreme measures for fear of losing Iris.
Jason’s eyes were dark and menacing, his voice low and threatening. “So the Zeller family’s predicament still can’t make you behave, huh?”
Ted suddenly had a feeling that all the troubles that had befallen the Zeller family might have been caused by Jason. However, he quickly rationalized, reminding himself that Jason was just a lawyer; he did not have the power to cause their downfall. He must have found out about the Zeller family’s troubles from the news, that’s all.
Ted declared confidently, “The Zeller family has faced many crises before. We will turn this one around too.”
It was not just bravado. The Zeller family was far from being at their wits‘ end yet. Jason raised his eyebrows. “Really? I’m afraid even God can’t save you this time.” His voice was deep and clear, filled with strength. Even though his tone was calm, it couldn’t hide the threat in his voice.
Just then, Ted’s phone rang. He answered it, and as he listened, his face drained of color. Whatever was said by the person on the other end was serious.
Ted said, his voice trembling, “I… I understand. I’ll be there in a minute.”
He did not have time to argue with Jason. His family was in deep trouble.
He got into his car and left in a hurry.
Once Ted was gone, Jason turned to the visibly shaken Iris. “Are you okay?”
Iris hugged herself and nodded. “I–I’m fine, thank you, Mr. Just.”
“I’ll take you home.” He placed his arm around her shoulder, but his touch sent shivers down her spine. She instinctively shrank away.
“Don’t be scared, it’s okay. It’s just me,” he reassured her gently.
Iris looked up, meeting his eyes. His deep gaze gave her an inexplicable sense of comfort. However, the panic from earlier surged back, overwhelming her.
What Ted had done to her left a heavy trauma in her heart.

A person whose ambition was to be a great lawyer should not be this weak. Iris thought she was embarrassing.
Her eyes reddened, and her voice turned hoarse. “I’m so useless.”
