Chapter 121
Chapter 121
Iris walked over and saw Stanley being dragged out of the car.
“Stretcher, quick!”
Stanley was placed on a stretcher and lifted into the ambulance.
Henry said, “Iris, you go with the ambulance. I’ll follow in my car.”
The doctor asked, “Is she a family member?”
Iris shook her head. “No.”
Henry couldn’t stand formalities at time like this. “Ex–wife is still a wife. We don’t know how bad Stanley’s injury is. He can’t be left alone
He pushed Iris onto the ambulance.
Inside the ambulance, the doctor immediately examined and treated Stanley. Once they arrived at the hospital, he was immediately taken to the operating room.
Iris sat on a bench outside the operating room.
Henry arrived a bit later and asked, “How’s he doing, Iris?”
“I don’t know,” Iris replied.
“I’ll inform his mother…” Henry began but suddenly stopped. He looked at Iris. If he called Renee here, Iris would surely leave.
Henry felt that Stanley still had feelings for Iris, even if he didn’t want to admit it. He was accustomed to being loved and to Iris backing down first, making it difficult for him to put his ego aside to apologize.
With a sigh, Henry sat down next to Iris. “Actually, Stanley…”
Iris cut him off. “I don’t want to hear you defend him. Besides, nothing you say will change anything. We’re already divorced. I’m here out of sympathy, nothing more than that.”
Henry licked his lips. He still felt like saying something in Stanley’s defense. “Fiora is a woman that Renee chose for Stanley. Fiora has been in love with him for years. Before you two got married, Fiora already wanted to marry him, and Renee really wanted that to happen too. She wanted to be in–laws with the Just family, who are highly respected in elite circles. If Stanley had married Fiora, the Stein family’s status would have been elevated even higher. But Stanley went against his family’s wishes and married you instead…”
“Well, I guess things worked out. We’re divorced now; so he can finally marry Fiora,” Iris
stated.
Henry was speechless. The more he tried to explain, the worse the situation became. He thus kept his mouth shut.

The corridor grew quiet, and time passed really slowly as they waited.

After two hours, Stanley was finally wheeled out of the operating room. Henry quickly asked the doctor about his condition. The doctor informed them that he had multiple abrasions, a mild concussion, and a fractured left arm.
Hearing that there was no life–threatening injury, Henry breathed a sigh of relief. “Thank goodness.”
He then turned to Iris and said, “Iris, please watch over him while I deal with the hospital admission procedure,” Henry said.
Iris nodded, agreeing to stay behind.
However, Henry never returned.
The doctor said that the patient needed care, so she had no choice but to stay. If no one came to take care of him by tomorrow, she would hire a caretaker for him. She felt she had done her best.
As night fell, the hospital became quiet. Iris stayed awake until midnight, but exhaustion eventually overtook her, and she fell asleep by the bedside.
Before dawn, at around five in the morning, Stanley woke up. His entire body ached, and his mouth was dry. He attempted to move but found himself stiff from the anesthesia. As he lay there, feeling his body gradually regain movement, he noticed Iris by the bedside.
His heart leaped–surprise and unexpected joy filled him. He stared at her for a long time; her head was resting on her arms, one side of her face illuminated by the dim light, creating a soft halo around her delicate features. How long had it been since he had seen this peaceful side of her?
His heart softened. He did not expect her to be the first person he would see when he woke up. He gently caressed her face with his right hand and shuddered.
He said hoarsely, “Why do we have to divorce?”
He never wanted to divorce her.
Wendy was just a fling.
Around seven o’clock, footsteps outside the ward stirred Iris awake. She rubbed her eyes.
“I’m thirsty,” she heard someone say.
Stanley had been awake since five. He was thirsty, but he didn’t wake her up; he simply watched her in silence.

“You’re awake?” Iris asked, looking up.
He grunted softly in response, his voice hoarse.
Getting up, Iris poured him some water, but he couldn’t sit up. Looking at her eagerly, he said, “Feed me.”
Iris was exasperated. She went to the nurse’s station and got a straw for him so that he could drink the water himself.
Stanley pouted, “A straw is inconvenient. Feed me.”
In the past, whenever he acted like this, Iris would surely comply with his wishes while pretending to look annoyed.
