Chapter 111
Iris pursed her lips. Her throat felt dry.

She was with Stanley for seven years and spent four years in the Stein family. During that time, she had devoted herself to her role as a wife and a daughter–in–law. She took care of her husband and respected her elders, enduring the harsh treatment from Renee without complaint, all because Renee was Stanley’s mother and she didn’t want to put Stanley in a difficult position.
But what had it all amounted to? More slander and humiliation. Even after she had divorced Stanley, Renee continued to regard her with contempt, looking down on her family and belittling her as a person.
Iris fixed her gaze on Stanley, attempting to steady her hoarse voice. “You know, Stanley? The biggest mistake of my life, the biggest regret of my life, is marrying you.”
Droplets of water streamed down from Stanley’s eyes, mingling with the water that dripped from his hair, making it difficult to tell if they were tears or just water.
Renee perked up at her words. “Regret? What do you have to regret? Marrying my son was the best thing that has ever happened to you. You come from a lower–class family with working parents. If you hadn’t married my son, would you have had the chance to meet wealthy young men like him?”
She pointed at Ted, her tone cold. “If you hadn’t married my son, would you have millions in your account right now? You wouldn’t have the opportunity to turn your life around or possess that much money.”
Renee had thoroughly investigated the asset division in their divorce. Including the money, bonds, car and house, Iris left with a total of fourteen million in assets.
That’s not all–if not for Stanley, Iris would not have met rich young men like Ted. That’s a kind of asset too.
Renee looked at Iris with disdain. To her, Iris was nothing but a pretty face. That’s the only reason men would fight over her.
Women tend to give other women a hard time, especially women who outshine them in every
way.
“I’ll say something that’s harsh but true: if you hadn’t slept with my son for all those years, you wouldn’t have received that much money. Whatever, it’s yours now. Consider it a payment for serving him…”
“Shut your trap, old hag!” Yvonne interjected, her anger flaring. She wanted to give Renee a piece of her mind but was restrained by Iris.
“It’s not worth it,” Iris said calmly, her voice soft

Yvonne was furious, her frustration boiling over, but she knew better than to act out in the police station. She gritted her teeth and held her tongue.
Renee sneered. “Birds of a feather flock together
“You…” Yvonne’s stomach churned with anger.
Before the tension could escalate, the officer intervened. “This is a police station; please keep it down.”
“Why don’t you resolve this among yourselves? Since you’re both injured, just apologize to each other, and you can go home with your families. We’ll consider the matter settled.”
Once the officer saw that there were family disputes involved, he knew that it was a delicate matter and would rather they resolve it among themselves.
Renee was eager to settle things quickly; after all, they were well–known people, and it wouldn’t reflect well on them if this incident got out.
Ted had no objections either.
The officer had them sign some documents and allowed them to leave.
After they walked out, Renee asked Stanley, “Why did you come to Seine Mountain? You didn’t mention that you have a case here.”
