Chapter 105
She quickly received a reply: [Why?]
Iris was certain that fason was unaware of the rumors circulating within the firm. If she hadn’t overheard the gossip by accident, she would have remained in the dark too.
She didn’t want to tarnish Jason’s reputation. Although they did nothing wrong, rumors could hurt. Besides, she planned to have a long career at the firm, and such rumors were not beneficial to the firm nor her career. People were already accusing her of “using her body“, and the rumors would only become more malicious.
She stared at Jason’s message, pondering. After awhile, she replied: [I feel like I haven’t gained enough experience yet. Also, turning permanent so quickly doesn’t comply with the firm’s policy.]
He replied: [Okay.]
Iris took off the badge she had just hung around her neck.
She reluctantly explained the situation to the HR department. They called Jason for confirmation before revoking her status.
Jason seemed to have guessed something. He told the HR department to issue a statement clarifying that the news of her promotion was inaccurate; Iris was not offered a permanent position as she had not met the conditions.
Though disappointed, Iris wasn’t discouraged. The promotion had indeed come a little too quickly. While the rumors were unfounded, she had to admit she only got the job through connections. Without Professor Sandler’s help, she wouldn’t have been able to work under Jason, nor could she have handled cases by herself so soon after joining.
Jason was already giving her preferential treatment by assigning cases to her. If she turned permanent so quickly on top of that, of course people would think it’s unfair. After all, they had to go through the proper steps when they started out.
With Jason absent and her case completed, Iris found herself with a lot of free time during work hours. Before she knew it, the weekend had arrived.
Yvonne arrived early in the morning to pick her up. Iris was dressed casually. Because she would be spending a night at the resort, she had packed some daily necessities.
During the journey, Yvonne said, “By the way, my grandfather might be at the Seine Mountain Resort too. There’s some kind of academic conference going on there. I just found out about it.
She turned to Iris, gauging her reaction. “You don’t mind, right? If you do, we don’t have to go.”
Iris shook her head. “I don’t mind.”
Chapter 105
She wished she could achieve some success before seeing Professor Sandler again, but that seemed impossible right now. She could only handle cases openly after turning permanent, so making a name for herself wouldn’t happen overnight. If she had to wait three years to distinguish herself, did that mean she had to make Professor Sandler wait for three years? That seemed unrealistic. So, she decided to meet him first. She would admit her mistake and apologize, then work hard to make him proud.
Yvonne continued, “That’s good, my grandfather’s health isn’t as robust as before…”
“Is Professor Sandler okay?” Iris asked, shocked and worried.
“He’s fine. Old people always have some minor ailments. Don’t worry; it’s nothing serious,” Yvonne assured her with a smile.
Iris‘ tense heart relaxed slightly. “Thank goodness.”
“The stubborn old man will surely be very happy to see you,” Yvonne added.
Iris lowered her head, her voice hoarse. “I miss him too.”
Shortly after, they arrived at the resort. As they got out to retrieve their luggage from the trunk, Ted’s car pulled up next to them. He stepped out and greeted them, “What a coincidence! Are you here for the weekend too?”
Yvonne rolled her eyes hard. She hadn’t expected Ted to be such a good actor. It was his idea to ask Iris to come, yet he pretended to run into them without missing a beat.
Iris was surprised. “You too?”
Ted nodded. “Yes. About that day–I’m really sorry for the trouble it caused you.”
“It’s alright, I’ve taken care of it. But don’t do anything like that again,” Iris replied. She was not one to hold grudges, and she had already put the matter behind her.
Ted glanced at Yvonne before quickly returning his gaze to Iris. “Which room are you staying in?”
