Chapter 17
Alexandra POV
Immediately I got into the room, I closed the door behind me, letting out a sigh of relieve.
“I can’t believe they fell for that,” I murmured.
The room was quiet, a little bit dim with the low sunlight coming in through the window. The kid was stilled seated were he was as of the time we came earlier to check on him. I kept a good distance between us, but ensued I was close enough for my presence to be noticed.
Wondering what he was looking at so seriously, I mimicked his gaze, looking out of the window as well.
The view was delightful, a small garden with flowers moving gently in the breeze. Some kids playing around, with what seemed to be a water gun. I sat there for a while, hoping my presence gives a little comfort.
After a few moments, the boy glanced my way but immediately returned back to the window. I decided to break the silence.
“Hi,” I said softly with a gentle voice. “How are you doing?”
The boy didn’t respond. His gaze was still fixed on the window, he had no sign on emotion, he just sat ther with a blank expression. I would not give up on him so easily. It surly will take time, but I’m as patient as a snail. I know he will surly open up to me.
“My name is Alexandra,” I continued. “What’s yours?”
Still, the boy didn’t say anything.
“When I was little,” I began, “I used to love watching the clouds, I would lie on the grass and make up stories about the shapes I saw. There was this one cloud that looked like a bird, a huge one. I used to pretend that it picked me up from the ground and flew me to all sought of magical places.
I glanced at the boy, hoping for some reaction, but his expression remained unchanged. I decided to continue talking about anything that came to mind, to see if I could draw him out
of his shell.
“I had this silly game where I would try to guess what people were thinking, just by looking at their faces, or we would look for a particular thing and the next person had to guess it,” I said with a small laugh. “It was pretty fun though I was usually wrong.”

As I spoke, I noticed the boy’s posture relaxing slightly. He wasn’t looking at me, but he seemed to be listening. I decided to try something different, something that might bring a smile to his face.
“Do you know what I used to do to make my friends laugh?” I asked, leaning a little closer. “I would make funny faces like this.”
I crossed my eyes and stuck out my tongue, pulling a silly face. I held the expression for a few seconds, then went back to normal, glancing at the boy. To my delight, he was looking at me, his lips twitching, as if he was fighting a smile.
Encouraged by my progress, I made another silly face.
I puffed out my cheeks, and pretending to be a chipmunk. This time the boy didn’t hold back, he let out a small giggle. He quickly covering his mouth with his hand, as if surprised by his own action.
I smiled warmly, feeling a sense of accomplishment. “There we go,” I said softly. beautiful smile.”
“You’ve got a
cat
We just stared at each other for a while. “Do you like animals?” I asked. “I used to have a named Merv. He was always getting into trouble, knocking things over, taking what didn’t belong to him, and chasing everything that moved.”
He gave a small nod. “I like birds.” He said.
“Oh really?” I asked, glad about my progress. “Why birds though?”
“Because they can fly and see what’s going on from above, some can talk, and they easily defend their loved ones.” He said
I was quiet for a while, thinking of the possible response, but I couldn’t come up with one. “Oh that’s nice.” I mentally face palmed myself for that sick response.
“What is your name? And how old are you?
“My name is Richard, and I am 9 years old, my birthday is in a few months from now,” He said.
“Okay, happy birthday in advance kiddo.”
“Why did you lock up my Mom and my pack members?” Richard suddenly asked. “They did nothing, and they are not themselves.”
“What!…… You Mom and pack members?” I asked

‘We were all home, I was playing with Amanda and suddenly, I heard a scream from the living room. I locked Amanda inside the room, and got out to inspect the noise. I got there,to see mom standing still, the pot of what she was cooking was spilled on the floor. Her eyes. were white. I ran to her, trying to draw her attention, but I couldn’t. She started moving and I followed her. On getting outside, I met others with the same eyes. They were all following someone in black, heading out of the pack’s territory, I still held onto mom.” He looked at me to ensure I was listening, and then back at the window.
“Some of the pack people went their separate ways, all three in numbers. Mum and two others were heading here, and I followed them. I don’t know how we crossed through the wall, but we
d. Later on they found us, and took us to that cold room,” He said.
“Oh my, what could have happened?” I murmured.
“Can you help me get Amanda? She must be scared, I locked her up, I don’t want anything to happen to her,” he asked, sobbing.
“OMG, that’s true, I will get Albert immediately and…”
“NO!!” He interrupted me immediately. “Please don’t tell him, he looks scary, and he might not help. Can you help me check on her please.” He said with tears pouring out from his
eyes.
“Shh…shh….don’t cry,” I said, embracing him. “I will help you, okay?” He nodded his head while cleaning his tears.
“Where do you stay? And can you give me a full description of your place, and how I can get there?” I asked him.
He gave me the name of the pack, the description of his house. As we were still talking, the door to the room bursted open, and Albert walked into the room. His eyes landed on me, his expression was mixed with concern and frustration. I immediately stood up, feeling a knot of worry tighten in my stomach. I knew I had lied to get in here, and now I had to face the consequences.
His eyes soften as he saw me fidgeting, but he maintained his serious demeanor. “Can we have a word?” He asked, his voice calm but firm,
I nodded and followed him out of the room. Once we were out in the hallway, Albert turned to me, “I told you to wait for me, didn’t I?”

“I’m sorry,” I sincerely replied. “I thought if it was just me, talking to him, he might open up.”
Albert sighed in frustration, “I get that, but you have to understand I need to be there, I need to be by your side no matter what. Even if it’s just outside the door, listening. I can’t let what happened to Lilian happen to you as well,” I suddenly felt bad.
I looked down feeling a pang of guilt. “I’m sorry I repeated. “I didn’t mean to worry you.”
His expression softened, and he pulled me into a hug. “I can’t stay angry at you,” he murmured into my hair. “Just promise me you will let me know next time. I need to be able to protect you.”
I nodded against his chest, “I promise.”
