Chapter 58 ~ A promise
Hours had passed and Ethan had still not stepped a foot in the bedroom. Rose was feeling tired and she ended up falling asleep the entire day.
She had woken up in the middle of the night and found the side of her bed empty. A part of her was disappointed but the bigger part was worried. She wondered what happened that would make him stay in his study for so long. Knowing how much he hated being disturbed, she decided not to disturb him and went back to sleep.
The next morning…
Rose woke up feeling very hungry. Sitting up, she rubbed the sleep from her eyes before grabbing the nightgown and walking downstairs.
Amanda was cleaning the living room when her gaze landed on Rose, “Mrs.Sinclair.! Good morning!” She agreed cheerfully.
“Good morning, Amanda. Have you seen Ethan?” She asked.
“Mr.Sinclair left early this morning,” Amanda responded.
“Did he say where he went?” Rose asked.
“No, ma’am,” Amanda responded.
“Thank you,” Rose said as she walked upstairs to grab her phone.
Ethan who had rushed to Zane’s office was waiting for the results in his office. His eyes were full of dark circles from lack of sleep.
“That woman plays you like ping pong man,” Zane commented.
“She’s just looking out for me!” Ethan responded.
“What if her claims are a lie? Will you then cut her off? I don’t even get what she did that was so great that
you
have to run to her beck and call!” Zane leaned back in his chair.
“It’s hone of your business.” Ethan snapped.
He knew his friends hated Zoe and would constantly tell him to cut her off. But he couldn’t, not–after the promise he made to her.
It was many years back when they were still young when it happened. Ethan had run away from home and ended up in an abandoned building. But he found two children his age that day. A girl and a boy who Hooked like they too had run from home.
But the building was so old that it ended up collapsing. The girl was the first to be saved leaving him and the young boy. But it became so bad that the rescue team could only save one child.
The boy pushed Ethan forward and took the hit where the ceiling fell and crushed him instantly.
When he was pulled out, he found the young girl waiting for her twin brother. She looked at Ethan and asked in her small voice,
“Where is Miguel?”

“I’m sorry.” Was the only thing Ethan could say.
The young girl turned out to be Rose. But because he had too much sand in his eyes, he could barely see. But when he walked over to the girl and held her wrist, he felt a bracelet that had the shape of a Rose
flower.
The two passed out eventually and when Ethan woke up, he had lost his memory except, he only remembered making a promise to a girl with a Rose flower–designed bracelet.
But a few weeks later as he was walking, he found Zoe sitting on the sidewalk in tears. He leaned forward to find out why she was crying and that was when he saw the bracelet.
He touched it and it felt familiar. It was like a missing piece of his life that was slowly coming together. He looked at the girl and his heart clenched at the sight of her tears.
“Why are you crying” He asked.
“I’m so alone! No one wants to play with me.” The little Zoe cried.
Ethan sat next to her and smiled, “I’ll be your friend. I’ll never leave your side!”
“You promise?”
“I promise!” Little Ethan said.
“Well, it becomes my business when you’re in my office and you’re looking like shit!” Zane commented. Pulling Ethan back to reality.
“Just give me the results.” Ethan snarled.
Zane shook his head. The results had come out positive but he felt like something was off, especially with Zoe in the picture.
“My machine is not working.” He lied, “So, I called for a faster solution. He should be here by…” He stared at his wristwatch, “Now!”
“Who did-” Before Ethan could ask, there was a knock on the door.
“Come in!” Zane said with a smile.
Ethan watched his best friend and wondered what he was up to.
“Good morning!” Dr. Calvin greeted making Ethan raise his eyebrow at Zane.
“He could easily be bribed to lie!”
Then pay him more money so he can tell you the truth. You’re pretty rich, so that shouldn’t be a problem!.”
Dr. Calvin, cleared his throat as he opened his briefcase. Żane had visited him the previous day to find out the truth.
“I’m told, you’re having doubts about the child Mrs. Sinclair is carrying?”
“We have evidence,” Ethan said.
“I’m afraid, it’s false!” Dr. Calving said as he pushed his glasses forward.

“What makes you say that” Ethan asked.
“Because Mrs. Sinclair is three months pregnant and Mr. Chen only returned to the city a month and some weeks back.” Dr Calvin said.
Ethan felt his heart clench and mix of emotions. He felt relieved but a pang of guilt hit his chest for how
cold he was to Rose.
“Why didn’t you tell me?” Ethan stood, anger flaring from his nose.
“Because..” Dr. Calvin shifted uncomfortably, “Mrs. Sinclair insisted she wanted to be the one to tell you!”
Ethan sat back in the chair and placed his head between his hands, “You can leave.” That was all he said. He knew the reason why Rose insisted on being the one to tell him. It was because he said he didn’t want children and he didn’t blame her for it. She probably thought the worst of him.
It was true he never wanted them, but after feeling the bump and knowing they had created a life, something in him changed. That was why he was so devasted when he was told he didn’t father the child. When he looked up, relief was written all over his face and Zane could tell he really wanted to be a father. A smile tugged the corner of Zane’s lips in pride. He was glad he didn’t believe the fake pictures. Without wasting another second, Ethan grabbed his phone and stood.
“Where are you going?” Zane called out.
“I’m going to see my pregnant wife!”
