After leaving the girls’ dorm, I stood in the sunset-drenched corridor, silently gazing at the vast sky I hadn’t truly noticed in a long time.

“A Ph.D. student in agricultural science…” It had been so long since I’d heard that title. Thirteen years ago, I was a young graduate student in a research institute, immersed in classes, research and writing papers. Until I unexpectedly became pregnant with Mason.

I hadn’t planned on keeping the baby. But Quincy acted as if he’d rather die than give up on having this child, begging me to marry him with a ring in hand. Before I knew it, I was married into his wealthy family and everyone said that I, Shannon White, must have the blessings of an entire ancestral line.

Quincy had initially promised me that once the child was older, I could return to my studies and pursue my dreams. But as days and years slipped by, Mason was soon old enough for school. When I expressed my desire to return to my studies, Quincy’s family said that Mason couldn’t have a mother who was “a country bumpkin’ messing around in the dirt every day.

Even Mason said, “Mom, Grandma said marrying Dad was the best luck you’ll ever have. Don’t embarrass our family.”

A sudden ring interrupted my thoughts. Seeing Quincy’s name, I calmly chose to block the number. I had already

filed for divorce and told him to speak directly with my lawyer if he had anything to discuss. If he could ignore my words, I had every right to ignore his calls.

In September, a typhoon blew off part of the roof on Grandma’s old home. I suggested to her that we reinforce and renovate the house and before beginning construction, we decided to pack some important belongings and

move them to storage.

As I entered my parents’ old room, which Grandma occasionally dusted, there wasn’t much to clean. As I sorted through the items, I found Mr. Bunny. Smiling, I turned to call for Grandma when I suddenly felt a tall, warm figure

blocking my view.

“That stuffed animal looks familiar,” Quincy’s deep voice murmured. My smile instantly vanished.

“Quincy, do I need to call the police and report you for harassment before you’ll leave me alone?”

The directness of my words caught him off guard and his usual aloof demeanor faltered. After a brief hesitation, he said softly, “Shannon, I know you hate me now and don’t want to see me, but we were married for thirteen years. I hope you’ll give me a chance to explain this misunderstanding.”

I looked at him coldly. “There is no misunderstanding.”

“There is!” I had never seen Quincy look so rattled as he stammered, “That day, when you saw me with Michelle at the hotel, why didn’t you call out to me? If you had, you’d have known we were there to meet a client staying at the hotel. If you don’t believe me, I’ll get the security footage…”

As he spoke, he pulled out his phone, preparing to call the hotel staff.
