Chapter 10
I told him I would pay him a court–mandated monthly allowance of a few thousand dollars. Beyond that, there would be nothing more.
Ignoring his curses, I turned and walked back into the villa. The security guards eventually forced
him to leave.
Two months later, I found out I was pregnant.
Jake was overjoyed and accompanied me to my prenatal check–up. While waiting for him to park
e car, someone rushed at me from the side.
It was my dad.
In one hand, he held a knife; his other sleeve hung empty. His eyes burned with hatred as he glared
at me.
“You ungrateful little bitch! If you’d given me the money, they wouldn’t have chopped off my arm.”
“You think you can abandon me and live comfortably, having your baby as a rich woman? If you won’t give me a way out, I’ll make sure you don’t have one either. I’ll kill you!”
Everything happened too fast for me to react. The blade was about to plunge into my stomach.
Instinctively, I wrapped my arms around my belly, trying to protect my child.
I heard the sound of the blade piercing flesh, but the pain wasn’t mine.
Jake had appeared out of nowhere, the knife embedded in his right side. He held my dad’s arm in an
iron grip, refusing to let go.
The onlookers finally realized what was happening and helped restrain my dad.
I clung to Jake, tears streaming uncontrollably down my face. He gently wiped them away, his voice full of tenderness: “It’s okay. Don’t be scared. It didn’t hit anything vital.”
“Does it hurt? I’m sorry, I’m so sorry…” I sobbed, apologizing over and over.
Jake patted my back soothingly.
doesn’t hurt. And it’s not your fault–it never was. It’s their fault.”

Emily, don’t be afraid. Everything you wanted but never received from them–I’ll give it to you a Aundred, a thousand times over.”
The day Jake had his stitches removed, I received news that my dad had been involved in a prison fight. Someone had stabbed him in the neck with a sharpened pencil.
He bled out and couldn’t be saved.
A few months later, our baby was born–a beautiful little girl, round and chubby like a dumpling.
Jake named her Pearl.
A treasure, as precious as pearls.
Looking at her adorable, tender face, I knew that we would love her deeply for a very, very long
time.
